Jane Says is a song by Jane’s Addiction, written by Perry Farrell and Eric Avery in late 1985 or early 1986. It is about their friend and former roommate Jane Bainter and her struggles with drugs, life and love. The first known recording of this song is from a demo recording session in January 1986 at Radio Tokyo in Los Angeles, CA.

In 1997, a music video was created for the live version of Jane Says that appears on the Kettle Whistle album. While the audio is from a Lollapalooza concert on July 24, 1991 at the Irvine Meadows Amphitheater in Irvine, CA and features Eric Avery on bass, video footage is from their October 31, 1997 concert at Hammerstein Ballroom in New York, NY featuring Flea on bass.

We would like to dedicate this album to Dewey, whose spirit pervaded the sessions and who will be fondly remembered by us all for his kindness and his wisdom. It was on a late summer evening at Dewey and Cassie's place in Sweetleaf County, Arkansas, that the seeds of these songs were sown. With a belly full of Cassie's hog-roast and a head full of Dewey's moonshine, talk turned to music. Dewey said "There is music for the body and there is music for the mind. Music for the body picks you off the floor and hurls you into physical activity. Music for the mind floats you gently downstream, through pleasurable twists and turns, ups and downs, rapids and calm waters... And sometimes there is music for the body and for the mind." After a few more bottles and some fine bearclaw, we made our way up to the ridge to take in the night air. Looking up at the sky, Dewey said, with a tear in his eye and way to much booze inside him, "Every man and woman is a star." Porno For Pyros is the band’s self titled debut album, released by Warner Brothers Records on April 27, 1993.  This album was delayed due to issues with the album’s artwork, which like Jane’s Addiction albums before it, was based on a sculpture created by Perry Farrell.  The main point of contention about the cover between Perry and Warner Brothers Records was the inclusion of a swastika inside a Jewish star of David on the side of the rocket.  The two disparaging symbols combined are apparently a universal sign of peace, although this is not well known.  A sketch of the original album cover concept displays the inclusion of the two symbols.  In the end, a drawing of a devil head was substituted for the symbol on the side of the rocket.  The sculpture itself apparently was destroyed after it caught fire and exploded shortly after being photographed due to a malfunction in one of the fireworks being used.

Several of the songs included on this album have their origins as Jane’s Addiction songs.  Both Blood Rag and Bad Shit began as interludes during Pigs In Zen.  The songs were never recorded and released by Jane’s and remained uncompleted until Porno For Pyros recorded and released them.

Ultra Payloaded is the debut release from Perry Farrell’s Satellite Party.  It was released on May 29, 2007 on Columbia Records in North America and on June 6, 2007 in Europe on Sony BMG.  The album was originally set to be released on May 15, 2007, but was delayed two weeks to finalize the album artwork.

The Chief Solutionist called the night nurse into his room. Looking up at the sky from out of the hospital window, he claims a cluster of stars was winking at him. “There is a party up there,” he said.

Japanese Pornomania is a silverback CD bootleg released by Moonraker.  It uses an audience recording of Porno For Pyros’ September 26, 1993 concert at the Shinsaibashi Club Quatro in Osaka, Japan.  The sound quality of the source audience recording is pretty good, despite some extra crowd noise toward the end of the show.The  liner notes of this bootleg include an excerpt from Perry Farrell’s Letters to Xiola poem.

Farrell fails to ignite Porno for Pyros

Usually Perry Farrell is a cool dude who makes all the right alternative moves to straddle the line between artist and pop star. So perhaps a yen-generating tour of Japan is now the cool thing to do.

But Porno for Pyros, Farrell's band for the past year after the breakup of Los Angeles-based alternative heroes Jane's Addiction, would be more entertaining if they weren't so obviously only killing time on stage.

Their concert Thursday at Club Citta in Kawasaki lasted exactly one hour--a typical Japan contractual obligation show. With no warmup band, this tour is no bargain.

Porno for Pyros does have its moments. The quirky, catchy song "Pets" is enjoyable on record or live, and the twisted L.A. logic of "Black Girlfriend" (key lyric--"Ever since the riot, all I've really wanted was a black girlfriend") is particularly strange with a Japanese dancer performing suggestively behind Farrell.

Like Jane's Addiction, Porno for Pyros seems to revel in creating anti-rhythms with an almost annoying treble-dominated sound.

Farrell's voice, which is remarkably devoid of any low frequency sounds, is the perfect lead instrument for this calculated cacophony.

Rarely do bassist Martyn LeNoble and drummer Stephen Perkins, a Jane's Addiction holdover, seem to be working together.

Guitarist Peter DiStefano plays his foot pedals better than his axe. Sometimes the mix is interesting.

On the whole, though, this four-man band lacks both the consistency and the musical ability of Jane's Addiction, and Farrell is not creative enough to carry it by himself.

Porno for Pyros also limits itself by not playing any Jane's Addiction songs.

It's admirable for the man who started the Lollapalooza alternative tour to want to forge an entirely new musical direction, but he hasn't really.

He's just playing the same sort of stuff with an inferior band that is neither pornographic nor pyroclastic enough to be unique.

This is Jane's Addiction performing live at Elysée Montmartre, Paris, France back on the 25th October 2003.  The concert was broadcast by the French radio "OUI FM", the concert was in support of their "Strays" album release.

Jane's Addiction is an American alternative rock band formed in Los Angeles, California in 1985. The band's original line-up featured Perry Farrell (vocals), Dave Navarro (guitar), Eric Avery (bass) and Stephen Perkins (drums). After breaking up in 1991, Jane's Addiction briefly reunited in 1997 and again in 2001, both times with Avery declining to participate. In 2008, the band's "classic" line-up, featuring Avery, reunited and embarked on a world tour. Avery subsequently left the band in early 2010 as the group began work on new material. To date, they have released four studio albums.

Strays was the third studio album by Jane's Addiction, released on July 22, 2003 on Capitol Records, and the first album to be recorded by a reunited Jane's Addiction. Released 13 years after Ritual de lo Habitual (1990), the album marks the band's longest gap between studio albums, and is the first to feature bassist Chris Chaney. Regarding the decision to record a new studio album after 13 years, drummer Stephen Perkins stated that the band had already completed two reunion tours performing old material, and that Jane's was ready for "a new challenge." Vocalist Perry Farrell states that the band "went into the studio thinking fast, hard, modern and to the point."

Upon its first week of release, the album sold 110,500 copies in the United States and is currently certified Gold. In the UK, the album is certified Silver, having sold over 60,000 copies. The single, "Just Because", was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2004.

The album received generally positive reviews, with a Metacritic score of 75, based on 19 reviews. Playlouder noted that "their glee and enthusiasm can be heard coursing through every bar.", while NME claimed that Strays was "one of the best rock albums of 2003." and Alternative Press stated that the album was "better than anyone could have predicted.
