Born in the Faroe Islands, Eivør’s early musical forays were steeped in Faroese musical traditions. Now residing in Denmark, her music covers a wide musical and emotional range, with themes of love, loss, memory, freedom and nature. She remains a voice unique in its intimacy, its effortless virtuosity and range of colours, evident from her first recording all the way through to her ninth and tenth albums, Bridges and Slør both released in 2015.

Trobar De Morte - The Song Of The Stones

Heavily inspired by Irish music, Anúna's "Jerusalem" and my own choral background I wrote this piece:

The Flowers In The Wind

A flower painted crimson red
like the blood on the snowy dunes
Placed upon your grave in the meadow
Quiet like the flowers in the wind

My true love had fallen in battle
a sword pierced through the heart
and a gunshot heard by his fellows
a bang in the quiet on the fields.

Lilies in the valley - scent sweet
but their smell won't reach me
For my love had fallen in battle
I remain quiet in the wind.

A handkerchief clenched in his hand
as his comrades took him home
they had told me he fought bravely
my true love in the fields.

I looked at his pale blue face,
and the bloodstains on his clothes
I kissed his forehead and said my goodbyes
Quiet like the flowers in the wind.

Trobar de Morte -Yufe: The End Of The Darkness [Reverie]

Well, the album opens with a piece called “Douce Damme Jolie”, music which originated in the 14th century and was composed by Guillame de Mauchat. This is very much the sound and territory that Perkelt have set out their stall to occupy. It is dominated by the flutes and whistles of Pavlina Bastlova and the percussion of Filip Tomanek. It is lively, ambient and seems to, indeed, capture the spirit of another age. For those from a jazz sensibility, there is room for Mr Tomanek to improvise a little on his percussion solo. Those with a rock background might find a Jethro Tull-esque feel to the flute and whistle work. Those who like folk music should be in paradise. There is more challenging territory ahead for those from an English-speaking background, but we could not have found a better starting place.
