Deutan is a new experimental folk project by Robert Eyres. Having recently relocated from London to Bournemouth in anticipation of fatherhood, a change of surroundings and mindset is reflected in this debut set of ditty infused ballads, aptly named Spaces. Each track is instrumental with only titles such as ‘Hengistbury’ or ‘Eden’, to nudge the listener in some kind of psycho-geographical direction. Within the thirteen soundtrack-like explorations, there is a harmonious appreciation for both old and new instrumentation, where whirring Satie-esq keys interlock with traditional violin and banjo melodies, electronically underpinned by delayed and droning synths. The main percussive element comes from rhythmic guitar, present on tracks like ‘Haven’ and ‘The Head’, a typical characteristic of Eyres’ song writing (see Rodents and The Bin Bags). More than just a refinement of his previous efforts however, Spaces reveals Eyres’ intuitive multi instrumentalism, inherited from a musical family, and his ability to meticulously craft catchy tracks in any given form.

PS026: Jack Lee - ‘BBQ Heart’ (Digital Album)

Having spent his formative years fronting Sydney’s home town heroes ‘Beef Jerk’ (Trouble In Mind), Lee has been fully through the garage rock wringer, and come out the other side as poetic as you’d expect from someone with a two year stint in Edinburgh under their belt. ‘BBQ Heart’ is Lee’s first set of solo recordings since 2017’s barnstorming ‘Infinity Rock N’ Roll’ on French label Beko. Skimming for genres could make easy catch of ’slacker’ or ‘dole-wave’, but tread deeper and you’ll find a high level of proliferation steeped in introspection and cultural dissection.

Anthemic opener ‘RNR…’ gets things off to a slow start, a strung out rock waltz of memory in crisis with the conductor’s tuning fork being continuously pelted at the wall. Child like levels of story telling on ’Nice Mice’ and ‘Otter’ brighten things up, with the accompaniment of brisk strolling tempos and catchy lead lines reminiscent of native predecessors Sleepy Township and The Cannanes, the latter a clear influence on Lee’s music, his uncle being a one time member. Off kilter from thematic jangling with thick fuzz filling in any audible gaps, title track ‘BBQ Heart’ satirises notions of nationalistic pride, delivered in a signature drawl, while the sluggish organ led ballads of ’Gloom’ and ‘Look At Me’ wave a flag for melancholic self reflection. ’Kentucky Lullaby’ gives a soul injection to similar ideas and the also lounge-y ’Everything I’ve Done’ flies by like a concise closing statement, leading to temperamental piano reprise ‘Look At Me’. Figurative, fictional and anecdotal, this loose as a goose album is over in just 20 minutes, it’s a rock pocket book you can take to the park with your picnic.

Far from the days of Beef Jerk, Lee recently graduated with a masters in town planning and currently works full time as a heritage consultant in Sydney. With a second book of poetry to be published imminently and ‘BBQ Heart’ marking his 5th solo album, Lee holds an admirable commitment to his hobbies, one to inspire bedroom rockers around the world.

Playing live with his revolving band of merry tings, Joe, Ed, Harry and Charlie, Rob creates the most chill of lo-fi pop vibes you can possibly imagine, from Chiggers to Lordship Lane and back. Originally a solo project recorded in a wardrobe under the moniker Smooth Dad, Buffet Lunch is the brain burps of Perry O’Bray, embellished by a northerner, a Kiwi and 2 Scots. Namely Luke Moran (Bouviér), Neil Robinson (Mazes), John Muir (Jack Lee Band, DTHPDL) and David MacDonald (Jack Lee Band, DTHPDL). They all met in sunny Edinburgh when Perry moved up from London and put some adverts out for band members on gumtree. Please will you join my band (be my friend), please please please. Perry likes writing songs about slimy snails, moths and other nightly creatures, sometimes in new trousers and trainers. Angular guitars on a bed of seaweed and rhythmic percussion. ‘The Snail EP' will be available as a digital download on Permanent Slump 25/1/19 and on cassette direct from Perry whenever you fancy. Expect a video for 'We All Have Hobbies'.

Basic Hinge is a multinational band comprising of Jack Lee (Beef Jerk) and Steph Ohlback (Stressless), based in Australia and Chris Hopkins (Seeds of Doubt, The Bin Bags, Dead Arm), based in the UK. The group met sharing a Sunday afternoon bill in Edinburgh, December 2017, due to mutual friend, Perry O’Bray. Jack and Steph’s visas soon expired and Chris was headed to Australia for a holiday not long after, so the three would share the stage again at The Petersham Bowls Club in Sydney for Anzac Day celebrations. From here the idea to start a collaborative project was born and demos began flowing back and forth through the inter-web. The ‘Perry EP’ is a few of those demos recorded a bit better. That’s how it goes right?

Some live shows in the UK will be happening towards the end of June this year.

The 'Perry' EP will be available on 15/2/19 on the Permanent Slump bandcamp and all major streaming services.

Order Of The Toad is Gemma Fleet (The Wharves, Thick Syrup), Andrew Doig (Robert Sotelo, JOYA) and Christopher Taylor. The three met when they became housemates in Glasgow near the Ibrox stadium in 2017. A Drum kit and amps already set up in the living room meant they SIMPLY HAD TO start a band. With a self titled cassette already released on Andrew’s own ‘Cusp Recordings’ (cusprecs.bandcamp.com), this is officially the second thing by OTT. The song ‘Heathen Eye’s’ from that tape is an absolute banger by the way, probably a PS fave of 2018. The ‘Rabbets EP’ title track sees the vocal debut of drummer Christopher Taylor, reminiscent of Stevie Jackson’s efforts on Boy With The Arab Strap. Beautifully soft octave-effected guitar pop accompanied by three perfect singing voices, give it a try, give it a listen.

The 'Rabbets' EP will be Permanent Slump's first vinyl release with a limited edition 7" lathe cut containing:

Dead Arm are back with a new 7" and they've calmed down a bit. 'It's Not As If/Living In A Bell', sees a less noisey, more minimalist approach, bolstering singer and band leader Lerryn's signature raw vocal, as she explores the complex emotional subject of pregnancy. 

"Pregnancy was replacing cigarettes with a daily bubble bath that smelt of old spice, boiled eggs, becoming anti things that made me scared, keeping half a lemon in a freezer bag in my pocket so that I could smell it to avoid ralfing on my commute, arguing about stability, hatred of the stench of a supermarket, gaining an earth shuddering amount of perspective, and the knowledge (not the belief) that women are the strongest ones" - Lerryn

 The Birthmarks are a band based in Manchester, England formed by the twin creative talents of Dylan Hughes and Edwin Stevens, who grew up together in the nearby welsh seaside villages Llanfairfechan and Dwygyfylchi.

The pair moved to the North West of England and formed the pop band Sex Hands who established a cult following in the UK before dissolving, resulting in the establishment of the Birthmarks.

They predominantly now perform as a four piece; Alex Hewitt on drums, Dylan Hughes on Guitar/Vocals and new members Bryony Dawson on Bass & Henry Withers on Guitar/Keys/Vocals - but occasionally are joined by original member Edwin Stevens on Guitar/Vocals. 

Collectively they are/have been involved in many diverse bands throughout the uk DIY music scene, including but not limited to Irma Vep, Aldous RH, Lovvers, Egyptian Hip Hop and Inland Taipan.

As a group they create something both familiar and slightly imperfect, through their process of constructing a melody and then tarnishing it.

‘Money Lane’ is a one off single by visual artist Alex Rathbon, accompanied by a video shot by Chris Hopkins. 

One time member of art punk duo ‘Infinite Men’, Alex has always had one eye on his guitar, alongside his painting, animation and performance work. Currently residing in Berlin, on ‘Money Lane’ Alex revisits his home town of West Drayton, London, exploring the emotions and memories that surround it. The video is shot at the nearby location of Greenford and accompanies the track’s somber tone as Alex and a childhood friend explore old haunts amongst a kind of reunion.

Love Tan are a brand new duo from Brighton, UK, formed of Ben Nightingale (B. Spanks) and Céline Doméné (Greetings from the Beloved Ghosts). On this set of multitrack bedroom recordings, they share instrumental duties with bass, drums/drum machines, guitars, keyboards, omnichord and xylophone, topped with playful French/English vocal harmonies. The songs contain a brilliant innocence that’s seldom present within today’s technological push for professionalism, echoing the twee and C-86 eras of bands like Beat Happening and The Pastels. Whether its the country classic cover ’I Don’t Hurt Anymore’ or the minimalist jangle pop of ’What’s The Point’, Love Tan offer a quick slice of familiar warmth whilst the world around us continues to complicate itself.
