Nýey excerpt

Since ancient times historical writings, scientific reports, and indigenous myths have reported audible sounds that accompany the northern lights. Recent studies suggest that these sounds occur during geomagnetic storms and most likely do not originate from the visual aurora. Nonetheless, the existence of these sounds has always been controversial. Most of the scientists who were concerned with this phenomenon left their study in the 1960s. At this time the infrasound was measured and accepted as the only sound connected to the northern lights. Despite all opposition, the Finnish Professor Unto K. Laine from the Aalto University in Helsinki started to study aurora related sounds in the late 1990s and has since collected evidence to prove their existence. His material is still unpublished and the question about how those sounds are produced remains unresolved. 

Driven by the words of those who have encountered and/or studied aurora related sounds, All Depends on the Sun delves into this phenomenon with the aim to open up wider reflections on sound and listening.

What if the 'invisible' beings Amerindian peoples have been interacting with have more in common with microbes than with the notions 'spirits' and 'souls' introduced by the missionaries during the colonial effort of conversion?

And what if shamans have been smelling, seeing, hearing and experiencing these beings for more than five thousand years?

Featuring a conversation in-between a human and microbe, "The Forest Within - Within The Forest" explores how knowledge about microbiology can be found encoded in Amerindian narratives and understanding of the natural world.

[ A blood vessel can be perceived as a river and also as a tree. That depends on whether you acknowledge it from the perspective of a microbe or from the perspective of a human. ]

Thought as both a multispecies documentary and a fabulative sound narrative, the piece interleaves human and microbial histories, perspectives, spaces and times; exploring borders, frictions and symbioses in-between acoustic and synthetic, abstract and concrete, single organism and environment, the guest and the host, the self and the other. "The Forest Within - Within The Forest" combines field recordings from the Amazonian rainforest, human and non-human voices and mimicries, Ciat-Lonbarde synthesizers driven by biological processes, ringing stones continuums, and radio waves recordings possibly generated by bacteria.

Islands Songs (Nicolas Perret & Silvia Ploner) live in Berlin and Paris where they have worked together since 2012. Their interest is drawn to territories that transgress anthropocentric and Eurocentric systems of value and move the boundaries of the unknown.
