Perry Columbus, known on stage as gracesgreatgrandson, is a Detroit-born recording artist, actor, and storyteller whose work blends music, theater, and fashion into a singular performance style that is both emotionally resonant and visually captivating. Although a late bloomer in vocals, Perry carries the weight and pride of a rich musical legacy as a third-generation singer — grandson to the late Pervis Jackson of The Spinners and nephew to Detroit jazz singer Stephanie Jackson. His approach to music is a fresh and dynamic fusion of soul, pop, rock, jazz/blues, and funk alternative, creating a sound that is both deeply rooted and strikingly original.
Growing up in Detroit, Perry dreamed of becoming a performer. At age 12, his mother enrolled him and his siblings in Mosaic Youth Theater, which became a formative and safe space that nurtured his creative urges and passion for performance, offering refuge from the challenges of adolescence.
At 18, Perry answered the call to serve, joining the U.S. Army where he served four years as a combat medic, stationed in Hawaii with tours in Iraq and the Philippines. His frontline service earned him the Combat Medical Badge, Army Commendation Medal, and other honors for providing medical care under fire to fallen soldiers. Perry was also selected to meet with then-Governor of Hawai’i Linda Lingle before being honorably discharged in 2007. This decorated war hero status and intense military experience continue to inspire his artistic voice and passionate exploration of themes like survival, resilience, and identity.
In 2011, Perry survived a near-fatal stabbing incident in Harlem, New York. Before this traumatic event, he had been hesitant to fully commit to music, but the near-death experience forced a profound shift. It led him to quit traveling, return home to Detroit, and dedicate himself wholeheartedly to his artistry and musical career. This pivotal moment reshaped his purpose and fueled a renewed commitment to creating and performing music.
Perry’s musical influences are wide-ranging and include legends like Otis Redding, Little Richard, Eric Benet, Dinah Washington, Janis Joplin, Louis Armstrong, Ray Charles, Maxwell, Little Dragon, Nina Simone, Adele, Amy Winehouse, Jill Scott, Luther Vandross, Albert King, Kelis, Take 6’s Mark Kibble, The Birchett Sisters, John Legend, John Mayer, Sam Cooke, The Spinners, Rachelle Ferrell, Me’Shell Ndegeocello, Eryka Badu, Tina Turner, Michael Jackson, Ella Fitzgerald, and Miles Davis, among many others. These diverse inspirations infuse his sound with richness and depth.
Having lived in cities across the U.S. and abroad — including Chicago, Miami, New York, Los Angeles, Milan, Hawaii, the Middle East, and the Philippines — Perry now channels all these experiences into his artistry while firmly rooted in his hometown of Detroit. Though Detroit remains his home base, he continues to travel extensively to create, perform, and grow his music career. Currently unsigned, he remains an independent artist forging his own path.
As a recording artist, gracesgreatgrandson has released a series of singles and demos including but not limited to “One Person Party,” “Say Less,” “High Card,” and “More Than Lore,” each showcasing his blend of pop, soul, R&B, and alternative influences. His current flagship project, Despair and Fashion, is an ambitious multidisciplinary album exploring fashion as emotional armor and survival, pairing lush arrangements with storytelling and visual design. His songwriting has been nurtured through respected programs including Motor City Sings: BoA Me, Songwriting With: Soldiers, and Heroes Touch the Sky.
His live performance history spans Pride festivals, civic ceremonies, theatrical stages, and concert halls. He appeared as a featured performer at consecutive Motor City Prides in 2018 and 2019, opening for Martha Reeves in the latter year. He has appeared onstage in multiple operas at the Detroit Opera House, including acting roles in The Pearl Fishers and Julius Caesar — the latter featuring celebrated performers Anthony Roth Costanzo and Lisette Oropesa. Perry has performed for Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib’s 2020 Juneteenth community celebration and was featured at the Wayne County Commission’s 2025 Black History Ceremony, where he sang the Black National Anthem. In 2019, he delivered the National Anthem at the Auto Union Presidents’ Meeting. His theater credits are extensive, including starring and featured roles in Metro Detroit productions such as Lola in Kinky Boots (2023, St. Dunstan Theatre in Cranbrook), HAIR Musical (Detroit Actors Theatre Company and St. Dunstan Theatre), Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown and The Drowsy Chaperone (Birmingham Village Players), and numerous productions with Stagecrafters, including Beauty and the Beast, The Rocky Horror Show, Kiss of the Spider Woman, and Shrek the Musical.
A versatile performer equally at home in concert venues and theatrical productions, gracesgreatgrandson combines vocal power, emotional depth, and style-driven stagecraft. His performances are known for seamlessly blending music and narrative, often enhanced by bold visual choices and intimate storytelling. Whether delivering an anthem for a civic event, embodying a complex theatrical role, or premiering original songs, Perry commands the stage with authenticity and presence, leaving a lasting impact on his audiences.
