Story Behind this recording:
NHK, Japan's national broadcaster, produced a program to introduce famous waterfalls in Japan, and various musicians performed at waterfalls all over the country. In this program, Fumio Miyashita dedicated a performance at Nachi Falls, one of the most famous waterfalls in Japan.

This album is like an otoemaki , or a scroll painting of music, created based on the inspiration he got from the performance at that time.

A playful music project by Koo a.k.a. Takuya Kuroda and Voo a.k.a. Marihito Ayabe (Chimp Beams, Loop Diary) both from Brooklyn, NY.

The two met as members of Main Space (started in 2008), an experimental rock band, and hit it off because of their musicality.
Amid each other's extremely busy schedules, they had a series of music sessions in their spare time to give each other updates on their recent activities. After 11 years, the album finally took shape. Kuroda's trumpet and keys dance on Ayabe's breakbeats.

Kuroda, an energetic and nimble jazz trumpet player with a hint of afro beat, and Ayabe, a dub beat maker with a dark and cosmic feel—the light chemical reaction between these opposing elements has opened a new musical page.

All performances are performed by Kuroda and Ayabe, who have deep roots in Brooklyn, and their unique friendship has made it possible for them to perform with guests such as Cory King (vocal, trombone), and DJ SPINNA (remix).

Enjoy the new world view of this album that transcends the genre filled with the flavor of the melting pot NY that scoops up this chaotic era.

Personal Affair is proud to announce “ESP-Disk’ Cassette Collection,” an officially licensed release from the Brooklyn based legendary Jazz label, ESP-Disk’, founded by Bernard Stollman. This is the second cassette release of ESP's back catalogue.

Recorded in December 1968 and January 1969, this relatively unheralded 1969 release was made by many of the musicians heard on Erica Pomerance’s album You Used to Think (ESP1098), released the previous year. Reminiscing decades later, ESP-Disk' owner Bernard Stollman said, "Octopus was fresh and ingenuous, the work of 17- and 18-year-olds." One member, bassist Lanny Brooks, was in fact 15, and two members of the band had to have a parent sign the contract. Guest saxophonist Trevor Koehler, a member of cult faves Insect Trust, later joined the Gil Evans Orchestra and was a sideman on Lou Reed's Sally Can’t Dance. There’s a broad range of styles here, from the catchy pop-rock of “Harold Knows” to blues to freaky improvs. That worked against the band finding acclaim, critics seemed to want something more easily categorizable. But the album has aged well; the strong guitar work of Riverdale (The Bronx) prodigy Dion Grody, born into a show-biz family, now works as the focus around which the album coheres.

In 1961, trumpeter Don Cherry had left Coleman's band, and its membership morphed into this trio. The following year, Ornette, tired of receiving lower fees than white musicians drawing smaller crowds, tripled his fee. After the resulting booking drought, in December 1962, Coleman produced and recorded his own concert at Town Hall in New York City. For the next two years, he made no appearances other than informally sitting in on others' gigs on occasion. Thus, when ESP-Disk' acquired some of the tracks from the Town Hall concert (in return for legal work ESP owner Bernard Stollman had done for Coleman) and issued them in the label's first batch of releases in 1965, it was important documentation of Coleman's evolution since the end of his time on Atlantic Records. Not only was it the first recording of his trio with Izenzon and Moffett, who were extremely compatible with the leader's new direction, it also included Coleman's first classical composition, "Dedication to Poets and Writers" (played by a string quartet), which anticipated elements of its composer's later style.

Recorded on September 10, 1964, prior to his well-known association with John Coltrane, this eponymous album (later renamed Pharoah's First) is the debut release of the iconic tenor saxophonist. 
(Yes, there are some spelling oddities here: the artist birth name Ferrell only later changed the spelling from the standard Pharaoh to the more personalized Pharoah.)
With one foot in mainstream jazz pianist Jane Getz had played with Charles Mingus and the other, tentatively at times, in the avant-garde, this is a fascinating glimpse of Sanders's style before he wielded the unremitting fierceness of his playing with Coltrane and the modal mysticism of his later solo albums on Impulse. Interestingly, in recent years he has deployed a more polished version of this sort of avant-flavored bop, bringing his career full circle and strongly suggesting that the hybrid heard here was not due to any failure of nerve on his debut but rather was the cornerstone of his conception.

On November 11th, 1964, Giuseppi Logan went to Bell Sound Studios to record his first album for the newly formed ESP-Disk' label. Bernard Stollman discovered Giuseppi and others who would form the nucleus of his label at the October Revolution Concert of 1964. For the recording, Giuseppi chose friends and fellow music companions Don Pullen and Milford Graves, and added bassist extraordinaire Eddie Gomez. The session is rich with imagination, and added to the dimension of musicians who would become the roster of ESP-Disk'.

More explorations of outer space by the spokesman for the space age.
When Walt Whitman wrote, "I am vast; I contain multitudes," he could have been channeling Sun Ra. The man born Herman Blount in Alabama, who claimed he was from Saturn, was equally at home reviving Fletcher Henderson compositions based on their original arrangements or unleashing totally free-form, athematic group improvisation - and many styles in between. It was practically a given that a New York-based (as he was in the '60s) avant-jazz performer as colorful and eccentric as Sun Ra would end up on ESP-Disk'.

The 1965 sessions that produced the two volumes of Heliocentric Worlds came during the most extremely free-form period of Ra's career, contemporaneous with The Magic City (Saturn Records). Volume 1, recorded in April with an 11-member band, consisted of seven relatively short tracks (none over eight minutes); recorded in November with an octet, Volume 2, in contrast, was much freer and featured the side-long "The Sun Myth" (over 17 minutes in length) and "Cosmic Chaos" (14+). The horn players and bassist Ronnie Boykins have plenty of room to stretch out and take full advantage. "A House of Beauty" offers five minutes of relatively lyrical respite between the other tracks.

When writing songs the drum machine is what most of my songs begin with,  be it the 707, 909, or DX. The drum machine is the nucleus and it all takes shape after I get that dope beat going. I like to call my genre of music Ishtramental.

“Bells” is the celebrated set that overjoyed the audience at New York’s Town Hall on May 1st, 1965.  It’s a ferocious, twenty-minute romp containing excellent group improvisation and Ayler's signature military-themed melodies.  The performance marks an important shift in Albert’s music: towards blurring the lines between composition and improvisation. It is also the debut recording of Charles Tyler.

Fumio Miyashita Profile
Musician, music therapist and founder of Healing Music in Japan.
Fumio Miyashita began his musical career in 1966. In 1969, he was an  
original member of the rock  musical, 'Hair', in Tokyo. He formed the  
progressive rock groups Far Out and Far East Family Band,  releasing  
ground-breaking albums and touring internationally. Always interested  
in oriental philosophy  since studying karate at a young age (he became  
a black belt in high school), he became interested in  oriental  
medicine after an injury on stage that only healed after undergoing  
acupuncture. In 1977, he  immigrated to the United States, where he  
continued to study oriental medicine, philosophy, the Chinese  Five  
Elements and also began, in earnest, to research music therapy.
In 1981, he decided to return to Japan, moved to Shinshu Iizuna  
Highlands and established Biwa Studio.  One reason for choosing Iizuna  
Highlands was because it's altitude is 1,250 meters and during his  
studies he learned that this is a very positive and healthy altitude  
for the human body to reside in. There  he created numerous works,  
including music CD's and image videos. His passion was for creating  
music  that was helpful to people and his recurring theme in his works  
was relaxation and healing for the mind  and body. He named his music  
'Healing Music' and he established his own unique style of music  
therapy.  His most important work, the long seller 'Meditation', has  
sold over 600,000 CD's. The long sellers,  'Tanjo' and 'Yasuragi', have  
sold over 300,000 copies. He had the privilege to perform specially for  
such places as Ise Shrine, Kashiwara Shrine, Tenkawa Shrine, Kasuga  
Shrine, Asukaimasu Shrine, and  Zenkoji Temple. Multi-talented, he  
helped many sports players with mental training, he performed as a   
musician and held seminars as a therapist. His 'Sleeping Concerts' and  
'Music for Prenatal Care' was  widely talked about. He passed away in  
2003, but in his lifetime he recorded and released more than  130  
works.
