This track has always felt to me the way looking at the light of Venus feels when there is just a touch of sunlight on the horizon, as the evening looms and the night sky reveals the Milky Way, the womb of Eve, the Loom upon which our lives are woven.

Special thanks to Jane Porcheddu for helping start this tune with imrpomptu piano and guitar recordings and some initial compositional ideas, and Christopher Stull for the electric sitar recordings, and Chace Maye for the hi hat recordings! Also I think @Dillard helped with the ice scraping on pavement field recording. :)

'Te Ahi Kai Pō' - a song which tries to find resolve through times of despair.

Ria Hall's new single is one of two songs in Te Reo Māori taken from her debut album which is out next Friday October 27. 'Te Ahi Kai Pō' means 'the fire burning away the darkness' and is in reference to finding peace following the aftermath of war. The battle of Te Ranga in June of 1864 is the inspiration for this song, which was an unplanned slaughter of many Māori. This spiritless attack was in retaliation to the battle of Pukehinahina, where the British found themselves at a loss to the Māori.

Drawing on the themes of not only love and war, but also revolution and change, the album Rules Of Engagement was initailly conceived in Wellington and completed in Hall’s ancestral home of Tauranga. The album’s inspiration and concept stem from the New Zealand land wars of the 1800’s, specifically 1864’s Battle of Gate Pā (Pukehinahina).

The inspiration behind the concept comes from a letter written from Henare Taratoa to Sir George Grey, outlining the manner in which the Battle of Gate Pā should ensue, and how both parties should conduct themselves during war. This code of conduct was known as the Rules of Engagement, and is where this project takes its name from.

Here is a beautiful new tune which came into being quite spontaneously like a flash of noetic lightning in the wake of some beautifully serene experiences in Seattle and the Cascade mountains.

It was a lot of fun and a real honor to feature vocal contributions from my friends Theo and Amma (Entheo - https://soundcloud.com/entheo), as well as Theo's guitar and a few percussive samples from my friend Jules O'Keefe.

I haven't given out a new free track in a while, and I think this is a breakthrough and a new direction for me, so I am going out on a limb and allowing this tune to spread how it may, in good faith that it will touch as many lives as possible.
