Very few musical acts achieve the levels of unanimous acclaim of Autechre. The English duo of Rob Brown and Sean Booth are not an act you simply like; they are an act you love, fawn over and dream about. They’ve got themselves here over the course of the last 28 years, and have done so by amassing a discography that’s about as perfect, influential and accomplished as could ever be possible. A key Warp label act from day one, they have released tens of albums, well over a ten EPs and have featured on a dizzying amount of essential compilations, mixes and remixes in that time. Without their contribution to the IDM canon, its fair to say the modern musical landscape would look very different. 

Rhythmic but experimental, absorbing yet abstract, cerebral and psychedelic, their ever evolving output is up there with the likes of fellow luminaries Boards of Canada and Aphex Twin as some of the most important in all of electronic music. As well as being fine craftsmen in the studio, Autechre are also revered live performers who really manage to conjure up captivating and otherworldly soundtracks that marry heavy bass with ethereal melody. The pair themselves do not care for genre, but suffice it to say that they have mastered everything from hardcore to ambient to glitch and plenty of indescribables in between. 

When the pair recently laid down an impressive set at Dekmantel Festival, we asked if they might be up for a doing an early inspiration mix, whereby they put together a collection of the sort of electro and hip hop tracks that turned them on as youths. At first they hesitated, pointing out that "we don't do strictly retro stuff, it's too corny.” But alas, a few days later, a huge file landed in our inbox… That file is a 4 hour and 18 minute mix that basically encapsulates not just Autechre’s own influences, but also acts as a fine anthology of the greatest electro sounds of all time. Every sub genre imaginable gets touched upon along the way, with nods to forefathers like Kraftwerk, killer cuts from Man Parrish, classics from Newcleus and retro gold from the likes of The Beat Club. It is a thrilling ride and a truly rare treat that reminds us just why we love Autechre, as well as shining a light on a vast genre that often pays second fiddle to house and techno.

Complex Sessions 004: Amine Edge & DANCE

Trevino is Marcus Intalex. He is widely known for making underground drum and bass. In 2011 he started the Trevino alias to feed his desire to get back to his roots and rekindle his 4 to the floor spirit. He was originally a house and techno dj learning his trade in the late eighties/early nineties. He was a regular hacienda punter, a huge fan of the belleville 3 and a keen late night reveller travelling throughout the UK to clubs and raves way before drum and bass even thought of. He worked his way up in the 90’s via working in records shops, djing in clubs and radio, promoting events and producing some significant dnb 12’s. From the end of the 90’s marcus has been in high demand flying around the world peddling his love for deep drum and bass. He still does this but he now also splits his dj calendar with his other alias Trevino and his love for all things 4/4. Well most things, certainly not gabba or hard house or gospel house or scouse house or anything too happy or too cheesy or too slow or too fast or too hard or too soft….sorry i digress.. 

Marcus’s other major passion is golf. He plays regulary, or he did before he moved to Germany, now he doesn’t play at all but that’s another story. The alias Trevino is named after Lee Trevino, his favourite golfer when he was growing up. Birdie, well you can guess the obvious golf reference there. There are also track titles of some his previous release that bare the names from the golfing glossary. For him it's just a bit of self indulgence. He doesn’t take himself at all seriously and certainly ain't lead by image, fashion or changes in demand and music styles. He likes it pure. 

So this all leads us to his current project. Entitled “Front”, this double ep/ album project has obvious golf connotations. The project will come in two parts with “Back” to follow sometime within the next 12 months. Both will contain 9 tracks in the same way a golf course has 18 holes split into two halves Front & Back. 

Marcus is keen to point out that the music has nothing to do with golf whatsoever, its just an idea he thought was a good challenge and keeps the golf thing rolling. 

So here they are, 9 tracks, aimed squarely at the floor. Nothing too arsey or technical or intellectual, just 8 solid dancefloor cuts plus one short beatless thing to help make them all fit onto the vinyl..

Welcome to the South Florida Audio Vaults.....presented by SAJTRON.
Starting off with the first recording I made of Mary's House radio show that aired every Saturday night on FIU's 90.5 FM WVUM.

I started recording these radio shows during my college years in 1994....being young and hungry for electronic music, not knowing where this broadcast was coming from, I would drive south of Ft. Lauderdale towards Miami where the signal became stronger. I then pulled over off the 826 freeway and into a parking area next to some warehouses.  I would then park, open my sunroof, turn on my portable JVC boombox that I brought, tuned in to Mary's House and hit record.  I would do this every week the show aired.  While I recorded the show I would do my homework in the car that I had for my college classes.  One day the tenant from the warehouse I used to park at called the cops because I was a suspicious car parking there every week.  When the cop asked me what I was doing, I said that I am just doing my homework and recording a radio station I liked and couldn't get a strong signal from Ft. Lauderdale.  He laughed and didn't believe me at first of what I was saying, but then realized I was right when he looked in my car and saw the boombox and college books!  So he eventually told me I couldn't park there anymore....and that ended my Mary's House recordings.  

This first recording I made is a very special show, it's Mary's House resident DJ Louis and progressive pioneer from the Edge Nightclub Bruce Wilcox....they were both good friends of mine and will be missed...may they both rest in peace.
