Boozer’s Lament

I was a boozer, you were a barmaid.  It was love at first pint
Your pub was no good but for love I came back every night
Glances, winks and innumerable drinks crossed the counter between you and me
On your only night off we’d make love, breathless and free

You served them up and I knocked them back
We were in love but you must’ve known from the start
My drinking you see, it brought us together you and me
So don’t go complaining that it tore us apart.

Maybe there were some things I could’ve said that might have convinced you to stay
But I was dead-set on a life of regret and you would’ve stood in my way
So now you’re back having fun in the Mexican sun, laughing and dancing and pure
I lie in the cold, bleary-eyed and alone, the wind whistling hard at the door

I don’t like coffee at all but now I drink it by the gallon
Since the doctor said ‘Rob, get yourself back on the wagon’
So I spend all day in this sterile café and I write

Boozer's Lament

7th day of National Songwriting month and I'm just getting started :( It's supposed to be a song a day... lol
I can't play guitar this week cos of slight injury so i'm going to be experimenting with acapella stuff... - here goes.

This is the Poem 'Rings' by Carol Ann Duffy from 'The Bees' 2011 put to my own music on guitar. 

Rings

Standing by a tower with no name
People falling from the sky 
I saw it crumble in the flames.
I thought I saw your face in the smoke that night
Was it a crown? 
Or was it just an eye? 

Watch your back
With your heart of glass,
Better come prepared 
Or they will stab you in the back

Your face is in the shadow lit only by time,
We laughed so much that night, 
Fuelled by Mary J and wine,
But life's a wheel,
It turns and turns, my friend, 
Sometimes you have the time of your life,
Then it burns burns burns.

This is the soundscape for an installation piece called "Time Off" premiered at an exhibition at the Crypt Gallery, London, organised by Sweet 'Art collective, celebrating International Women's Day. It features the amazing vocal talents of the following fearless females (of open mic fame!), Sarah Kate Michel aka Pandorasdiary, Gilly Spencer, Annee Patrice, Carmel Morrissey, Kate Wreford & Leon Heart also interviews with anthropologists, Professor Chris Knight and Dr Lionel Sims and the sound of Londoners on the march..
