Allister Whitehead's Return To Shine

With Allister coming back to The Hacienda for the Christmas party at Sankeys on 27/12/16 which sees some eight of the clubs original residents reunited, here with a very special mix which puts together the set he performed back in November 1991 on the first night of his Shine residency,

Following The Hacienda's re-opening in 1990, Shine was the Friday night replacement to the long running Nude and saw Mike Pickering and Russ take charge of the night alongside special guests who included the likes of Todd Terry, K Klass, Sasha and more. 

About the opportunity,  Allister comments;

"I was asked by Mike Pickering in 1991 to cover for him at ’Shine’  on Friday’s  while he was touring and recording with M-People. Not many DJ’s got the chance to play the Hacienda, it was like being asked to play for England!   Obviously, things went well for Mike and I became resident from 1992 - 93 on Friday’s at Shine and I did Tuesday’s as well for a while.  We had some great guests (Todd Terry, Kevin Sanderson etc...) and some special nights, including a few of the infamous foam parties, which were amazing and pretty close to the incredible Nude nights back in 88/89. To play the Hacienda at full pelt was a rare thing for a DJ apart from Graeme and Mike and has provided memories I will treasure all my life. Thanks must go to Mike Pickering, Graeme Park, Peter Hook and Ang Matthews."

Dusting down and digitising the same set from that night, Allister pulls together a number of the tunes that characterised The Hacienda in late 1991 including US club hit Brother Makes 3 to open. Union City Recording's hit Mombassa "Cry Freedom" follows up whilst the mix also includes carat gold classics, Denise Lopez's "Dont You Wanna Be Mine", Rusty "Everything's Gonna Change" and the Sasha remix of Jimi Polo's "Better Days".

Many may regard this as the golden age of early 90’s house between 91-93 and no doubt you’ll recognise many tunes taken from various sets including Sasha at Universe - Pleasure Planet, probably the most popular house mix amongst UK ravers to date! Finishing my trilogy of nostalgic nights at the grand daddy of all Manchester night clubs, the legendary 'Hacienda'.
 
I never got to DJ at the Hacienda (well once at a private function downstairs in the 'Gay Traitor' does that count?) But let's face it when you have Russ Marland & Mike Pickering on a Friday and the legendary partnership of Tom Wainwright & Graeme Park on a Saturday the only place you ever wanted to be in the Hacienda was on the dancefloor! I missed the early years as I was only a puppy in short trousers when it opened so I started going in 1992, but for me it was 1993-1995 that really stood out as the ultimate Hacienda years. The music, the atmosphere, Tom & Graeme working the night, it was just magical. I remember one night being stood outside were those huge fire doors and you could hear those David Morales 'Def Mix' deep basslines coming from inside, it was like a cathedral of sound... There will never be another like it.
 
This mix features the sounds and tracks that I loved and were played there in 1993. It's not necessarily the big anthems but for me personally every record just encapsulates the sound that was 'The Hacienda'. Hopefully it will transport you back to an imaginary 1993 night at the corner of 'Whitworth Street, Manchester'.

Back to Love (Athenaeum, Hacienda & Home Nightclub Classics)(Part 3 - The Hacienda 1993)

Pete Bromley has been Stoke On Trent's top House DJ since 1989 and it has been an interesting and varied journey for him! Resident DJ at Stoke's first successful Underground Dance night 'Introspective' back in 1989 he went on to play at the infamous Shelleys Laserdome as well as other influential clubnights across the UK. Pete's next residency was to be at the Freetown in Hanley which would see him play alongside DJ's like Sasha & Dave Seaman. This would become the stepping stone to his next residency, the legendary Golden. Pete was the main resident DJ at Golden for an amazing 11 years which saw him play with the worlds biggest DJ's bar none. During this time he played many guest appearances at places such as Cream, Renaissance, Ministry Of Sound and DJ magazine listed him as one of the most popular resident DJ's in the world, resulting in his Essential Mix live on Radio 1 alongside Pete Tong at Sankeys in 1996. Quite an accolade seeing as he has never bolstered his career with international gigs, remixes or a recording career as 99% of producer/DJ's do these days. After Golden's demise IN 2003, Pete then went on to become one of the resident DJ's at Satchmo's which has now become part of Stoke clubbing folkelore and his position has been cemented over the last years as resident DJ for the Move and their parties at The Sugarmill, Spode Warehouse & The Underground  playing alongside Jamie Jones, Patrick Topping, Solardo, Skream, Annie Mac, Derrick Carter, Pete Tong, MK, Todd Terry, Seth Troxler, The Martinez Brothers, Steve Lawler, Hot Since 82, Eats Everything, Darius Syrossian, Detlef, Latmun, Richy Ahmed, Micheal Bibi, Rich NXT, Jacky, Heidi,Alan Fitzpatrick, wAFF,  Dimitri From Paris, Kenny Dope amongst dozens of House musics elite.
