Episode 75, the three quarter century, was a bit of a special one - it was broadcast on Valentine’s Day, which is also my birthday! Couldn’t resist slipping in a couple of loved up smoochers, but this episode was all about the promos really, with two new cuts from myself and some brand new heat from disco friends Pete Whitely, Pete Ellison, Jack Tennis, Shalvoy, Da Lukas, Robert Ouimet & Dave Godin and Mascott

As it was my birthday, I’d lined up an extra special guest for hour 2 - Michael Gray!!! Michael is a hugely respected and established British DJ and music producer, best known for his hits ‘The Weekend’ & ‘Borderline’ He is also one half of the dance music production and remixing duo 'Full Intention' who have been at the forefront of Dance music since the early 90s.

London-based Michael is one of the most in-demand Artists on the global dance music scene today. Having relaunched his solo career as Michael Gray in 2018 to pursue his original love of Disco, Michael has consistently placed in the top three house artists on Traxsource - an incredible achievement and a worthy accolade for Michael's world-class production skills. Throw into the mix awesome DJ sets at the best events in the UK, and a host of chart topping tracks with Jon Pearn as Full Intention, and you start to see the full picture of one of the UK's most talented Artists. He has DJ’d all over the world from MOS in London to Hi (for Glitterbox) & Pacha in Ibiza and as far and wide as Poland, Germany, The Philippines, Australia, Russia, Brazil, Georgia, Spain and The Netherlands.

Label manager of Belgian label DHB, Nico P is shedding his skin to create his new moniker, Aytiwan. 
Nico P, who usually produces melodic house music, created Aytiwan to dedicate his production solely to afro house sounds. The project has allowed him to express his emotions in a different style, collaborating with singer Nes Mburu to release upcoming EP ‘Ilanga.' The 4 track EP sees remixes from label friends Enoo Napu and Klaudius.

Released on Nico P's new label Deep In Your Soul, the original track ‘Ilanga' was inspired by love and positive energy. Produced by Aytiwan and performed by upcoming artist Nes Mburu, "nikupende, pende pende" is the melodic hook throughout the track, translating to "I love you, love you." The track begins with a steady rhythm, the heartbeat of the song, which is dark and brooding. Mburu's soulful voice cuts through, submerged in distortion and delay. Afro-house percussion lifts the atmospheric presence, building a dynamic and colorful soundscape. The track which sits at 7 minutes 30 seconds, never drops in energy levels, and the melodic repetition is hypnotic and spellbinding.

For the ‘Ilanga' EP, Aytiwan collaborated with South African artist Enoo Napa, who produced two remixes for the EP. The first remix plays around with thudding bass lines and stomping beats. Electronic synthesizers weave in and out of each other, layered with Mburu's vocal hook. Piano chords add a bright warmth, especially during the drop before it plunges back into an intensely entrancing finale. Enoo Napa's alternative remix, experiments with new percussion and rhythms that give the song a different feel. A synth bass line is a standout feature, while the piano makes a return adding lightness to the mood. The atmospheric energy of Aytiwan's original track is still at the soul of the music.

Belgian producer Klaudius crafts a third remix, taking a different approach by using the piano as the foundation of the track, panned with gentle percussion, while Mburu fades from the distance into the forefront. Without the steady beat of the kick drum, the song feels mellow and contemplative, until it eventually kicks in bringing the song back to its origins. The hypnotic quality remains throughout, ebbing and flowing with ease, a melodic and laid-back arrangement that shows the song in a different light.

Each version of ‘Ilanga' is a personal journey that reflects the original song in powerful ways, capturing different moods for listeners to experience, showing the versatility of Aytiwan's original production and creativity.

If ever there was someone who the phrase “How does he find time to make that?” was about, serial editor and remixer Pete Le Freq is it. His reworks have been played on BBC Radio 6 regularly by Craig Charles, and DJs the world over, and the sheer number of tracks he produces have caused people to suggest he doesn't sleep much.

Pete started producing over 12 years ago, and made a bit of noise with his house label Llama Farm Recordings. He's been remixed by Jay-J, Eric Kupper and Kenny Summit, appeared on compilations with Joey Negro and LCD Soundsystem, and played alongside  the likes of Crazy P, Inland Knights, CagedBaby and a few others. 

Since discovering the things he was sampling were better than the things he was making, Pete found that retouching and reworking the originals gave him his producing mojo back, and soon after Alpaca Edits was born. 

The York based edits label has since become home to disco superstars such as Dr Packer, Chuggin Edits, and Mannix. He’s been resident DJ at Sotano in York for the last 7 years, and this has fuelled his productions to greater heights. He’s known for playing 5 hour sets that incorporate both his new productions and others versions of serious disco action.

2019 has seen Pete get a vinyl release alongside the likes of Fingerman, Al Kent and Sleazy McQueen on Samosa Recordings, produce remixes for the likes of Hot Digits and Midnight Riot, as well as having 4 eps of his reworks on his own Alpaca Edits. He’s also debuted at Tramlines Festival in Sheffield, and made a return to rock the Toil Trees stage at Beatherder for the second year running. 

November saw him support Michael Gray and Fingerman at Distrikt in Leeds and Derek Kaye in York. The year ended with him beating the likes of Mousse T and Ray Mang in the Traxsource Nu-Disco Top 100 Artists of the year. 

Lockdown saw Pete go into rework overdrive, running a weekly Thursday night stream, as well as starting a regular show on Street Sounds Radio. He also worked with Ashley Slater of Freak Power on some original tracks.

2021 has seen the return of Pete’s That Needs An Edit nights in York, and will culminate in December with a guest slot from Shaka Loves You.
