Peter Boyer's Symphony No. 1 was commissioned by the Pasadena Symphony, and premiered by that orchestra under his direction in April 2013. The three-movement, 24-minute symphony is dedicated to the memory of Leonard Bernstein. This is the first movement, "Prelude."

Boyer: Three Olympians - London Philharmonic Orchestra

The GRAMMY®-nominated “Ellis Island: The Dream of America,” Boyer’s most ambitious work to date, celebrates the historic American immigrant experience and the American dream. Innovative in its format, the work brings elements of the theatre and multimedia into the concert hall, employing actors and projected historical images from the Ellis Island archives.

The spoken texts for the work come from the Ellis Island Oral History Project, an historic collection of interviews with actual immigrants about their experiences emigrating to America. After extensive research in this archive, Boyer chose the stories of seven immigrants who came to America through Ellis Island from disparate nations between 1910-1940. He fashioned short monologues from the actual words of these immigrants, and wove them into an orchestral tapestry which frames and comments on their stories -- by turns poignant, humorous, moving, and inspiring. The work concludes with a reading of the Emma Lazarus poem “The New Colossus” (“Give me your tired, your poor…”), providing an emotionally powerful ending to this celebration of our nation of immigrants.

“Ellis Island: The Dream of America” was commissioned by The Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts, in celebration of the inaugural season of its Belding Theatre. It was premiered by the Hartford Symphony Orchestra, conducted by the composer, with actors from the New York stage, directed by Martin Charnin, at the Bushnell in April 2002. The premiere was broadcast on National Public Radio’s “SymphonyCast” program in July 2002.

Since its premiere, “Ellis Island: The Dream of America” has gone on to enjoy tremendous success, becoming one of the most performed American orchestral works of the last decade. The work has received over 160 live performances by more than 70 orchestras, a rare milestone for a contemporary orchestral work. More than 200,000 people have experienced the work live, and its performances have regularly been met with standing ovations. “Ellis Island: The Dream of America” has consistently elicited in audiences a profoundly emotional response which is truly rare for a work of contemporary classical music.

In September 2010, The League of American Orchestras’ SYMPHONY magazine profiled “Ellis Island” as one of “a handful of recent works by living composers becoming orchestral standards.” Of those six works profiled, “Ellis Island” was by far the longest in duration, and also the most recently composed work.

Boyer recorded the work with the Philharmonia Orchestra and a cast of renowned stage and screen actors. This recording was released by Naxos in its American Classics series in 2005, and it has been broadcast by more than 100 classical radio stations around the United States, and internationally. This recording was nominated for a GRAMMY Award for Best Classical Contemporary Composition in 2006. Interest in “Ellis Island: The Dream of America” continues to grow, and all signs point to the establishment of the work as a permanent part of the American orchestral repertoire.

The composer's first major orchestral work, composed in 1995 at the age of 25 (2 years before James Cameron's iconic film about the doomed ship), "Titanic" is a tone poem which employs extensive contemporary orchestral techniques. The work won the BMI Award for young composers, and was premiered by the Hartford Symphony Orchestra, Michael Lankester, conductor, in 1997. This was the first of the work's three recordings, made in historic Abbey Road Studio 1 under the composer's direction. (The work was subsequently recorded by the Toledo Symphony, Andrew Massey, conductor; and the Bamberg Symphony, Gabriel Feltz, conductor.) Originally released by Koch International Classics, and later remastered and reissued on the Propulsive Music label, the recording has been broadcast extensively, and the work has been performed by many orchestras.

"And the night shall be filled with music" was commissioned by Richard Messenger and the Irvine High School Chorale, and premiered by them at Carnegie Hall in April 2005. They recorded this track shortly after at Concordia University, Irvine.

The work takes its text from H.W. Longfellow’s poem "The Day Is Done" (excerpts):

The day is done, and the darkness
  Falls from the wings of Night,
As a feather is wafted downward
  From an eagle in his flight.

Come, read to me some poem,
  Some simple and heartfelt lay,
That shall soothe this restless feeling,
  And banish the thoughts of day.

Such songs have power to quiet
  The restless pulse of care,
And come like the benediction
  That follows after prayer.

Then read from the treasured volume
  The poem of thy choice,
And lend to the rhyme of the poet
  The beauty of thy voice.

And the night shall be filled with music,
  And the cares, that infest the day,
Shall fold their tents,
  And silently steal away.

The work is a lyrical setting of Longfellow’s text, often dividing the choir into eight parts. It is suitable for advanced high school or college choirs (SSAATTBB, accompanied).

"Silver Fanfare" was composed in celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Pacific Symphony, in Orange County, California, in 2004. It was originally composed as the first movement of a six-movement work for soloists, children's chorus, mixed chorus, and orchestra, entitled "On Music's Wings." Carl St.Clair conducted the premiere at the Pacific Amphitheater.

Written also to serve as a stand-alone orchestral concert opener, "Silver Fanfare" has been performed by such orchestras as the Boston Pops and the Nashville Symphony. It was chosen as the season opening work of the iconic Hollywood Bowl in both 2015 and 2016, performed by the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra.

"Three Olympians" for string orchestra was commissioned by The Conductors Institute, Harold Farberman, Director. Boyer recorded the work twice at Abbey Road Studios: with the London Symphony Orchestra for his debut recording (2001), and then again with the London Philharmonic Orchestra for Naxos (released 2014). "Three Olympians" has had an active performance history among both professional and student string orchestras, and a significant record of broadcasts by classical radio stations throughout the United States and Europe.

The works of GRAMMY®-nominated composer Peter Boyer have received over 400 public performances by nearly 150 orchestras, and thousands of broadcasts on classical radio stations around the U.S. and abroad. He has conducted recordings of his music with three of the world's finest orchestras: the London Symphony Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Philharmonia Orchestra. His works have appeared on the Naxos American Classics, BSO Classics, Koch International Classics, Albany Records, FWSO Live, and Propulsive Music labels.

Conductor Keith Lockhart chose Boyer for the Boston Pops’ 125th anniversary commission honoring the legacy of John, Robert, and Ted Kennedy. The premiere of Boyer’s "Kennedy Brothers" in 2010, narrated by Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman, and Ed Harris, was attended by members of the Kennedy family, and received extensive national media attention. The Boston Pops also performed the work on their Fourth of July Fireworks Spectacular for an audience of over 750,000; gave it two separate telecasts; performed it at Tanglewood with narrator Alec Baldwin; and released its recording.

Boyer’s major work "Ellis Island: The Dream of America" has received over 160 live performances by 70 different orchestras, making it one of the most-performed American orchestral works of the last decade. His recording on the Naxos label was nominated for a GRAMMY® Award for Best Classical Contemporary Composition.

In addition to his work for the concert hall, Boyer is active in the film and television music industry. He has contributed orchestrations to more than 30 film scores by top Hollywood composers, including "Finding Dory" and "Skyfall" (composer Thomas Newman), "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2" (composer James Newton Howard), "The Amazing Spider-Man" (composer James Horner), "Jurassic World," "Inside Out," the Oscar-winning "Up," "Star Trek," "Mission: Impossible III," "John Carter," "Super 8," "Cars 2" (composer Michael Giacchino), "Dolphin Tale" (composer Mark Isham) and "Arthur Christmas" (composer Harry Gregson-Williams). Boyer has twice arranged music for the Academy Awards, and composed music for The History Channel; his music has appeared in the AETN Production Music Library, several short films, and various television programs.

In recent seasons, Boyer has served as Composer-in-Residence of the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra (2010-11) and the Pasadena Symphony (2012-13). He holds the Helen M. Smith Chair in Music at Claremont Graduate University.  His latest commercial recording, featuring his Symphony No. 1 and other works with the LPO, was released worldwide by Naxos in 2014.
