"Now I dream of you...passing by..."  

This track is the 398th song posted in the Interbay music project since mid-January 2023.  (This is the 258th straight day of posting tracks here on SoundCloud and before that, 140 tracks--with videos--were posted on Facebook.)  And this is the first time that I think I've created something truly distinctly original.  I don't know of anything else that sounds like this.  

Granted, I always say that no matter what I'm trying to sound like, it always sounds like Interbay more than anything else--but when I use the tag "mutant pop" to describe nearly every Interbay song...in THIS case, I can't think of a closer description.  

Go ahead, hit play...and read along as I'll try to catalog the combination of elements that I'm not sure has ever come together like this before.  

You've got singing on this track.  Lots of it.  While all Interbay tracks posted here to SoundCloud, there will be a vocal element--but often, it is in the form of dialogue or spoken word.  Occasionally, there's some singing--but this track is silly with it.  

You've got a female vocal line--very ethereal and dreamy (reminds me a bit of the slept on Interbay track "Selfishly"--go check that one out, it is deep in the back catalog.)  You also have a male vocal line with a more complete narrative, singing about a girl that he seems to both admire and, perhaps, feel intimidated by...at the same time that he doesn't worry about saying something negative about that same girl.  The interplay between the two creates the central tension in the song.  But then there's a bunch of wordless vocal adlibs...soaring into space and surrounding the entwined narrative elements.  

The first instrumental element you'll hear sounds like a synth sound you might have heard from a pop trance song of the late 90s early 00s, but it's actually a piano...the hammers hitting strings without the cabinet resonance.  It sometimes gets buried by other sounds, but it is, I think, always there throughout the song.  Add to that an insistent and occasionally relentless drum pattern-- that can best be described as "rest-kick-kick-kick" (though there actually is a rimshot on the 1, it blends in with the first note from the piano so you might not notice it.)  And don't forget some crazy hi-hats propelling everything forward.  

This track has guitars.  You've got an almost Spanish style guitar playing minor arpeggios, you've got another guitar playing palm muted plucks, and still a third guitar--an acoustic playing rather punk-like down struck chords.  

The bass has a nice bounce that counterplays with the guitars well.  There's some synths, subtle and grainy, a few times in the track...

What else?  Oh...you've got big 80s orchestra hits (what?) and something that sounds like a duck. (WHAT???)  

If this isn't mutant pop, I don't know what is.  (Otherwise, I'd have to come up with a word that means "Electronic indie trance pop 80s 90s spanish rock midtempo house jangle alternative rave up."  I'm pretty good with words, but I'm not THAT good.  

So, if you're up for an adventure into the world of mutant pop, the world of Interbay...then you'll get into "Passing By" in a big way!

"Passing By" *SoundCloud Exclusive*

Let me try this one more time:  The Interbay track "Listen (Aylala)" has been unfathomably ignored by the algorithm--it deserves more than only 4 listens.  Even if it turns out you don't like the grindy sort of club industrial music that song is...you should hear it to decide for yourself.  Please--go give that track a listen (it is from earlier this week, so it isn't too hard to find) before coming back and giving today's track its own attention.  Thank you!  

OK--on to the SoundCloud Exclusive Interbay track for March 28, 2025...and THIS may be a first.  

As you know, Interbay tracks can sound like anything--it could be electronic dance music, singer-songwriter indie pop, disco, new wave, drum & bass, ska...whatever is the sound that's in my head is going to be where that day's production takes me...BUT, as I've said in these descriptions many times, whatever genre or style I might be aiming at...it all ends up sounding like Interbay (more than anything else, including the intended genre or style.)  

...but THIS one?  I think I nailed it.    

I wanted a 60's style Motown-vibed pop R&B/soul track.  Horns, guitar, a fluid bass, a strong male vocal lead, background singers...and that's what this is!  

I wanted that 60s pop song structure--introduction, chorus, verse, repeat, fade out...and that's what this has!  

It isn't a slave to the retro-vibe, though.  I didn't add any vinyl noise, any dust or scratches.  The claps sound a lot more electronic than they would have been back in the day (though, not enough that I felt justified in adding the "Electronic" tag that most Interbay songs earn--so, if you see me in the next few days begging you to check THIS track out, it's because it might not be recommended to the people that normally get Interbay songs recommended to them...)  

Could this be a modern retro-styled throwback to those days?  I think it could.  Like, I could imagine Bruno Mars doing this song--but in a video where it looks like he and his band are performing on the Ed Sullivan show (or something similar.)  

As those of you who have been paying attention, the motto for this crazy Interbay music project is "Learn by doing, make your mistakes in public"--and THIS might be a sign that lessons are being learned, that I have improved enough to at least hit the target I'm aiming for...for once!  

I hope you give this a listen and embrace the spirit this song has been crafted to be.  Give it a like if you do.  Repost it so others can enjoy it.  Share it so your friends hear it.  Add it to a playlist so you can keep it in rotation.  Leave a comment--especially an encouraging one--so I know I'm on the right path. "Kick Off Your Shoes" *SoundCloud Exclusive*

There are times when I think that I look forward to reading these descriptions (that I write) so I can understand what it is I just made and why I made it.  

Somehow, I seem to have the power to baffle myself.

For example, today's Interbay track, "Can't Escape It", started off as a simple repetitive riff that fell somewhere between dark afrohouse and a housier version of phonk (maybe?)  And somehow that simple riff turned into this synth pop industrial tech house radio track?  (How did this happen?  No, seriously, i want to know.)  

Where did the "(I Just Died) In Your Arms" by Cutting Crew" style keyboard chords come from?  Why did I think that was the missing element in a track that sounded nothing like that?  How about the oddly dissonant bass sweeps or the comet trail synth fx or the nasty distorted factory sounds?  

...and for all of these rather disparate and unexplainable ingredients, the end product is surprisingly sweet and tasty--if yesterday's track, "Falling In and Out" was one of the more pop-focused Interbay tracks ever, "Can't Escape It" sure feels like another one.  (Am I learning? Am I gaining skills?  Will tomorrow's track be nearly unlistenable?  ;) )  

Now, you may be wondering about the thumbnail image (me too!)  The vocal samples each came from different royalty free sample packs and didn't have anything to do with each other--one being pop, the other having an afrobeat feel to it...but, and I didn't notice this until I started thinking about what a good thumbnail image might be--as much as I'd LOVE to claim this was all by design, it is just one of a billion happy accidents that Interbay has been blessed with--the lyrics could be interpreted as being a retelling of (at least one of the versions of) the movie Blade Runner.  

I'm sure these aren't the actual lyrics being sung, but if you squint your ears, you can convince yourself that you're hearing "Want more life, want more time"--which sure sounds like what Roy Batty came to earth to ask Dr. Tyrell for...  And then, the main hook (the poppy vocal), it feels like Roy accepting his fate--that when they're all alone, they can't escape it.  

Again, I'd love to take credit for this as having been planned--but, I must admit that it wasn't.  

Anything else?  Well, be warned--some of the bass in this track goes very low, indeed.  (In my head, I sounded just like Michael Caine just then.)  I produce in headphones so I don't know for sure, but if you play this through speakers...keep an eye on your woofers and subwoofers to make sure you're not damaging anything.  (Or just turn the damn music down--though, I know you won't...and neither will I.  ;)  I'm sorry, what???)

Can a song be deep, minimal AND tribal?  

I'm not sure, but I may have created that very thing with this latest Interbay track, "Planetarium."  

I tried my best to reign in my maximalist tendencies to let this track breathe on its own.  

That's not to say that it isn't easily identifiable as Interbay--this thing has M1 organs, synthflutes, baby scratches, a thick staccato lead, five different tops, heavy processing on some of the vocals, etc.  

I didn't try to win the loudness wars with this track either--though the bass is pretty thicc on this track, so watch your speakers if you feel like you want to turn up your volume early on.  

Give "Planetarium" a listen and a like.  (You could also repost it, share it, add it to a playlist, and/or leave a comment on it as well.)

"Planetarium" *SoundCloud Exclusive*

Wish me luck with this description.  I'm still under the influence of the sedatives I was on for my dental appointment yesterday--certainly, I can't drive and I probably shouldn't have to sign my name to any contracts or anything like that.  But, I'm pretty sure I can type a little bit.  

(But, if what I say is poorly spelled or starts not to make sense--it's because I'm loopy on Halcyon.)  

Yesterday--which was posted before the meds made me loopy--was, perhaps one of the best examples of a "pure" electronic dance music track, in that case it was a house track, that I've managed.  (If you haven't, go check out "Fathoms" for yourself!)  

Today's track, couldn't be more different.  It is so many different things all at once. ("Am I Mimi? Am I Meemer?  I am MANY dogs."--j.riggi)  The tempo is far slower, the bass is the most prominent instrument, which can go from sparse to energetic to buzzy subs over the course of a few seconds.  The synths blur from chorus to verse, and some sound like a carnival pipe organ.  

And, over the top of the whole thing is the voice of a laconic and "over it" emo girl who is finally asking her significant other why their unhappy relationship continues.  

(Though I pulled a couple of my own emotions and borrowed some that I undoubtedly caused others to feel, this isn't a direct one:one retelling of any real life story I've lived.  Hopefully, there's a universality to the narrative...so it can all be felt by everyone.)  

My favorite sections of the song are when the production and sound design owe a large debt to 10cc and their incredibly beauitful and sad "I'm Not In Love" hit.  (You'll probably know it when you hear it.)  

Is this pop?  RnB?  Trip hop?  Synthpop?  Indie?

By now, you should already know the answer.   

It's Interbay.

"Last So Long" *SoundCloud Exclusive*

Does size matter?  

I am probably not the person who should answer that question, but it certainly does FEEL like it matters when you feel small.  

That's the emotion behind this latest Interbay track, "Immense."  It isn't about one's actual size, but how people imagine themselves in the eyes of others, or by their own sense of self or how much that sense of self is lacking.  

So, to represent this sense...there are huge sounds on this track.  Tribal drums, orchestral strings and brass, pressure waves of bass.  But there are also some tremulous light synths and some pizzicato strings for contrast.  

By the end when suddenly Buddy Rich jumps behind a drum kit and demands a brief and chaotic solo (I'm talking metaphorically here)...it's been quite a journey (including a cheeky nod to one of my favorite Paul Weller songs.)  

I like playing with big ideas--both emotionally and musically.  Not sure if I have any right to...but as long as no one is stopping me, I'm going to produce the kind of music that I am moved to make...and all I can do is be true to that, and do my best to realize that, here, for you.

As always, I appreciate those of you who listen to Interbay tracks...and am thrilled when you give them a like or repost/share them. "Immense" *SoundCloud Exclusive*

This is the 500th consecutive day where a never-heard-before Interbay track has been posted to SoundCloud.  

Often, when I hit a big round number like that, I try to challenge myself to write something at the top of my skill set.  The 100th Interbay music video posted to Facebook had me crafting a track that was inspired by The Beatles' Abbey Road Medley (but ended up sounding nothing like The Beatles and very much like Interbay.)  The 160th SoundCloud Exclusive song, which, when combined with the 140 tracks originally posted to Facebook meant it was the 300th Interbay song had me inspired by Billy Joel's "Scenes From an Italian Restaurant" (though, it sounded more like Interbay.)   The 340th SoundCloud Exclusive song, the 500th Interbay song ever let loose from Phantom Laboratories West, was an homage to an early Prefab Sprout song (say it with me, "that sounded more like Interbay.")    

So, I was thinking that I should do the same for today's Interbay track, the 500th SoundCloud Exclusive (in 500 days.)  I was inspired by a YouTube video where David Bennett explained "Negative Harmony" and I wanted to incorporate that in some way--so, I thought I'd be writing a piano tune (as David is, mostly, a Pianist/Composer/YouTuber.)  

However, I opened an Electric Piano instead, figuring I would swap it out for a proper piano once I got the chord progression sussed out.  Except, when I HAD figured out the chord progression, I looked through of the preset sounds and found something that, to me, sounded very interesting--not like an electric piano at all...  

...and then everything went all Interbay on me.  And, honestly, maybe that's more representative of this journey that you've been taking with me.  I'm not really much of a piano player, so why would I commemorate this big round number with a piano composition?  It would be far more "like Interbay" to do some crazy synth pop influenced song that doesn't really sound like synth pop or the 80s or synthwave from recently.    

It just sounds like Interbay.  As it always does.  

For words, I wanted to come up with something profound, but, like the music, I went with my gut instead--and as a few of the songs lately have been written with words a bit more personal, I continued that trend by writing lyrics that described my feelings as having produced and shared my own music for each of the past 500 days.  

And, in case you're curious...I DID write/produce/post 500 songs and I MIGHT write/produce/post 500 more.  (Hopefully that doesn't result on me falling down on anyone's floor.  Da da-la daaaaahhhh!)  

Pardon me, I happened to haver just there.  

No music samples on this track.  Just me, making me-style music. 

It might not be what I'd intended to produce for today...but, I can't imagine anything more appropriate to celebrating so much Interbay with even more Interbay.

"Missing the Point Entirely (500 Days)" *SoundCloud Exclusive*

Yesterday, I hinted that the track I'm dropping today was going to be "noisy."  

Well, despite the reassuring ice cream truck sounds that start this track, rest assured--this one does INDEED get noisy.  

One of the best things about growing up where I did is that, in the summer, there would be a truck that would troll up a down streets in a neighborhood--not every day, as the same truck would have to cover several neighborhoods this way.  It would play an annoying but highly effectively repetitive tape of music box/calliope sounds over the tinniest p.a. speakers imaginable--the effect of which would signal the imminent arrival of the ice cream truck from blocks, maybe even miles, away.  

I thought that moving to Seattle would mean no more ice cream truck visits--and that was true when I lived up on Capitol Hill and when I lived in Interbay...but, moving to Ballard, getting married, having a kid...suddenly, the stars aligned...and sure enough, the summer would once again be occasionally interrupted by familiar music coming from blocks away.  And rather quickly, that noise would be heard first by my kid...who ran to look out the front window to see if it was going by our house.  

They're not so eager now, as they are definitely a teenager and capable of getting their own ice cream...but it was fun to relive my own youth by watching their enthusiasm for the years they had it!  

I heard the ice cream truck this summer...but we let it go by.  Shouldn't have.  Should take advantage of an ice cream truck whenever you can.  

If you are an old, like me, you certainly know the source of the snippets that Icarus is risking his life for...and I would venture a guess that there's a number of us that can probably still recite it word for word (maybe even do some of the snotty dance moves, too!)  

In the early days of rave, a bunch of the (now considered to be) old skool tracks were based on recontextualizing childhood memories into uptempo chemically fueled mind exploders.  I might have been channeling some of that energy--which, in itself, is worthy of nostalgia...which is kind of mind boggling.  House music is around 40 years old now, rave is more than 30 years old...and my knees and back hurt just thinking about those numbers.

"Ice Cream Truck" *SoundCloud Exclusive*

There was a trend in 90s house music where the actual lyrics of whatever song was being sampled (and filtered) was purposefully inaccurate--instead of saying what they originally said, they were listed as to what they sounded like...and because of the brain's desire to discover and embrace patterns--whether or not those patterns are actually there--the brain will start to hear what your eyes tell you that you should be hearing.  

The best example of this was when Chicago (yes, the band) had their song "Street Sounds" sampled by The Bucketheads (Kenny Dope!)--but the song was not titled "Street sounds fall into my mind," as the original lyrics would suggest.  

Instead, the song was called "Da Bomb."  

(...ahhh, you see what I did there.)  

Well, this was going to be another one (though, nearly 30 years later)...as I was going to call this track "Diva Getting Stronger"...despite the fact that the first vocal element is saying "Keep On Getting Stronger"--you can "hear" it as "Diva Getting Stronger."  The other vocal sample "could" also be heard as "Diva, Diva, Diva, Diva, Body Strong..."  It's not, the sample says "Keep That"--not "Diva."  But it's more fun to think of it as, like the thumbnail, a fierce ruling diva pumping iron in the gym and seeing massive gains.  

This might be my favorite Interbay house track.  Big statement, I know, but this fills me with the same vibe I had when I spent every Saturday night spinning for a packed house of 1200 and the juice that provided.  It is a hard feeling to replicate, all these years later--but this track has hints of it.  

Would I have spun this?  I think I would have.  

...and I think it would have kept the floor jumping.

"Getting Stronger" *SoundCloud Exclusive*

Hopefully today's Interbay track didn't freak out anyone paying for the ad-free SoundCloud experience--this isn't an ad, it only sounds like at the beginning.  An ad from the 50s or 60s, advertising some low budget Corman-esque sci-fi b-movie that by the summer will be packaged with another similar film for a drive-in double feature.

And then come the synths and the very Simmons-kit style pounding drums, and we are definitely in the 80s.  This might be one of the truest and most credible 80s new wave synthpop style tracks that Interbay has yet shared.    

And then, some rave stabs push us into the 90s.  

Truly, this is a song out of time.  

(Or, in many times.)  

I spent a little more energy on this track to give it a chance to shine in the neverending flood of Interbay track drops (every single day, a new track...so far!)  It was a joy to work on--and I don't think it took any more TIME to get it to where I felt it was ready to share with you today...just that I paid more attention to the details and tweaked things until I felt they were as good as I can do with the skills I currently have.  

I hope you agree.  I mean, I hope listen to this track...and every Interbay track.  I hope you give a like to this track...and every Interbay track.  I hope you repost it, share it, comment on it, add it to a playlist...though, I recognize that's a tall ask for you to do that with EVERY Interbay track--but it would sure be cool if you did.  

Most of all, I hope you follow this page.  Hop on this crazy music time machine--it is larger on the inside, you know.  If you follow, you'll be presented with new Interbay music every day (so far!) and what a wonderful present to yourself that would be--and, like a good gift, you won't really know what you're going to get until you unwrap it!  

(Unless you have "X-Ray Vision", of course.  That would let you know what you were going to get without unwrapping it.  Hmmm...that might be a good name for a Phantom Laboratories West patreon, if such a thing would ever exist--because it would give you full vision into everything.  Again, I say...hmmmmmmm.)

"X-Ray Vision" *SoundCloud Exclusive*

"I put the hands on the record.  I put the hands up."  

I was a nightclub dj for twenty years...and boy did I love hip-house.  I loved cut & paste.  I loved being really active in the mix.  I loved records that blurred genre lines.  I loved records that kept surprising me and never stopped moving.  

i would have loved "Hands and Needles" by Interbay.  I wish I would have made it when I was still spinning.  

But, because I also love you--the people willing to spend a few minutes to listen to these daily drops of Interbay--I did something I almost never do.  

I edited myself.  (I know, right?)  

Somewhere in my head, there's a version of this track that doesn't fade out, that kept going and building and...well, it would have been as long as any of the often Interbay tracks posted here.  

Instead, you're getting a far more easily digestible version, suitable for radio play...with the energy compressed into something approaching a criticality.  

I honestly think that it is better this way--though, I reserve the right to change my mind--but, for now, the longer version will be held in The Vault...perhaps only to be shared with Phantom Laboratories West Patreons some day...  (Some day...)  

The only decision that I regret, but one I felt was necessary, is the addition of a vocal synth to a sample that would definitely have put Icarus into potential danger.  The sad part is that recognizing the sample would definitely have given you a giggle--it certainly makes me smile every time I think of it.  (And I have a version without the vocal synth on that sample to amuse myself, that I daren't share here--again, perhaps a bonus for future Patreons?  (Perhaps.) )

(If you want to deconstruct the mix to better imagine the un-vocal synth'd version, ask yourself why at the very end of the track does the vocal become "hands across the needles" (or why the word "needles" is repeated, with effects that make it sound like it is underwater?)  A love of 70s pop should give you your answer.  (One more hint to make it obvious?  "The butter wouldn't melt, so they put it in a pie.") )

This track is purposefully a little messy.  It is part of the charm of the era that it is an homage to, that sense of imperfectness makes it feel, for lack of a better term, a bit more punk rock.  Just as you didn't need to be Emerson Lake & Palmer to make a compelling and glorious noise with your limited skill, you didn't need to be DJ Qbert to cut & paste and scratch a bit and make something delightful and floor filling.  

As my best times dj'ing were almost always on a Massive Saturday Night, it feels rather natural to share this track in time for Saturday night clubbing.  Even if your club is, essentially, your home, your car or your headphones...I hope that Interbay can get your blood pumping.

It is Monday again (there seems to be one EVERY week!) and that means a track dredged up from the climate controlled storage room where the tracks that were originally posted on Facebook (January 2023 to May 2024), has gone through the Rethink, Remake, Remix process in order to make it compliant with the new standards placed on all Interbay tracks that are shared here on SoundCloud.  

Getting the RRR treatment today is Experiment 12, which you can see (because all of the Facebook-posted Interbay tracks had full videos made for them) and hear the original version on Facebook, if you're curious.  

The original was a moody sound design-forward instrumental.  Used to do that a lot in Interbay's Facebook-era--but one of my rules for SoundCloud tracks is "all tracks MUST have a vocal element" (i.e., no instrumentals.)  

This became the most difficult obstacle for pushing this track through the RRR process.  The whole point of the original was that it was a vibey, formless blob, of noises designed to make you feel a bit "off."  You can't just add spooky singing over it--that's a bit too on the nose.  You also can't just throw some unrelated singing on it, you'll end up ruining whatever was good about the track to begin with...  AND, you have to be careful with just dropping any spoken word on it, because one of the other guidelines for SoundCloud posted Interbay tracks was to focus more on soundcraft and structure.

I think I found a way to thread the needle.  I don't know why the sounds of Experiment 12 makes me think of fluid dynamics--but it does.  It did even when it was posted, as the video (which is mostly filled with early NASA outtakes, has a slow motion wave tank moving back and forth--so, it was on my mind at that point.)  

I won't pretend to know anything about computational fluid dynamics, nor should you have to in order to enjoy this track...but, I found that these glossary definitions act a bit, at least in my mind, like a laminar flow.  (Which is a term I just learned!  Interbay IS Educational!)  And the repeated (but always different) pronouncements of "Fluid Dynamics" is basically my tip of the hat to Magnus Pyke's "Science!" interjections in Thomas Dolby's most popular track.  

The track is long.  A low bpm and trying to create a very moody vibe do not combine to produce a 2 minutes 50 pop song.  So, settle in...if it is autum where you are, pull a cozy blanket around you...and I would recommend headphones, if you have them.  It's a vibe thing.  

(I guess I could have just said that and skipped all the rest.  See, self-editing IS my nemesis!)

"Fluid Dynamics" (exp12 RRR) *Exclusive Remix*

Once again, you are sensing correctly that the vibes of Interbay's daily new music drops is getting darker...probably as I'm anticipating what might get posted for the upcoming spooky week, and that darkness is seeping through a bit early.  

This is pretty straight forward drum and bass.  As is typical for an Interbay track, I've crammed as much as I possibly can into the track--ambient wash keys, synth pop keys, three different kinds of bass, dozens of breaks, a movie snippet (bonus Interbay points if you know what the movie is!), and some very dark spoken word sections.  

...and a shot of adrenaline to boot!  

This hyper-caffeinated track has a rather ironic theme--that of surrender...and peace.  

The cognitive dissonace of being hyper aware, hyper active, and clear of thought--is more than a bit scary.  

I should point out that the subject of this theme, the source of the spoken word sections (but not the movie clip) is unreliable.  To put it another way, he's wrong in the advice he gives.  

What makes life meaningful is to accept that life won't be perfect, that we'll all have dreams that never came true and fears that did, that happiness can be fleeting...but is more precious because of that.  

If you never breathe, you never live.  And, however dark my personal emotional and mental state has EVER gotten, I've always believed (and will always believe) that life is worth the risk.    

I mean, without life...there would be no Interbay--and we can't have THAT!

"Never Breathe" *SoundCloud Exclusive*

"A second is a hell of a long time."  

Sometimes, when I'm down in the Labs, doing my thing--you know--I'll have an idea and I'll work toward that idea I had.  (It rarely ends up close to my idea, but that's another story.)  

Other times, I'll just jump in the pool and see if I can swim.  I'll play around, I'll look for sounds that I can build on or I'll come up with some chords or maybe even a melody line.  It's just trusting that things will come together as I pick the things I like and discard what I don't like.

Just so I don't lose these proto-ideas, in case something crashes without warning, I'll save the project.  To do that, I need to come up with a project name.  I try not to overthink this part (which I have a tendency to do about everything), so I often pick a word that describes the vibe of the track so far, or I'll come up with a clever turn of phrase that I might want to work into the idea more, other times, I just come up with something truly random.  There's no rhyme or reason to it.  

This is one of the times where I just saved the project with the randomly chosen word "zoning."  

Now, the fun beings when I pick up a project that I had temporary shelved (ahhh, the fun of adult ADHD!) and try to get myself back in the mindstate I was in when I gave the project its temporary name.  I tell myself "I must have meant something by this" (even though I know that sometimes I didn't.)  This is how a lot of "temporary project names" end up as song titles, even though they hadn't meant to be the final product name--sometimes, arbitrary focus helps my neuordivergent brain.  

So it was with "Zoning."  What does "Zoning" mean to me, I wondered...realizing that I'd left myself very few scraps of half-baked ideas in this project file.  

Wouldn't it be cool if I did a song about Urban Planning!  You know, density, walkable neighborhoods, eliminating stroads and changing single family home zoning to multi-family or mixed use zoning?  

Maybe that'd be cool--but, we'll never know...because I didn't do that.

I went forward with the idea of "Zoning Out"--the idea switching your brain off and thinking about nothing.  I could not follow this path based on experience, as I don't think my brain has ever been switched off, the hamster wheel inside my skull is always spinning at ludicrous speed.

And when I started bumping up the tempo--to the point where this track ended up somewhere between Psytrance...Hardgroove...and NRG--I quickly realized this would NOT be the music to "zone out" to.  

Seattle is currently all excited about various sports teams--the M's are one win away from the World Series (it would be their first), the Seahawks are doing well, the Kraken just started their season.  The Sonics are still spitting on David Stern's grave.  It's a thing.  

Athletes can get "in the zone," what scientists are now calling "flow state"--and that just sounded like a good way to tie in title "zoning" with the uptempo techno trance euro Frankenstein I was creating.  And all Interbay songs on SoundCloud do need a vocal element, the pieces fell into place!  

This is more of a Saturday night track than a October weekend sort of track--just fair warning.

"Zoning" *SoundCloud Exclusive*

I was intending on waiting  couple more days to start SPOOKY WEEK, with dark and possibly scary songs appropriate for the season.  Then I spotted something that inspired THIS track--so, it is possible that SPOOKY WEEK is starting early...it might be starting now!  

What I noticed is that this song today is the 526th Interbay track posted here on SoundCloud (one a day for 526 straight days!).  When you add this to the 140 Interbay tracks that were originally posted on Facebook, before I started posting here...that means this track is the 666th Interbay track.  

And this song was the result of being inspired by such a devilish nummber.  

(Well, I suppose I could have posted an Interbay'd up cover of an Iron Maiden song...but I went with this.)  

The story is original to me.  The vocals, obviously, are not.  You've got some spooky ambience, a Gary Numan-y synthline, and constant dance beat pulse, and a section that, unintentionally, sounds a little bit like the theme from Phantom of the Opera (only because of the synth patch chosen and the chord used--but none of the melody or anything--just that one chord.)  

A little synth acid to spice things up and an occasional switch into a sped up trap beat.  

In other words, it's totally Interbay.  

Originally, I was going to call this track "Packed With the Devil"--notice that it is NOT "Pact With the Devil."  Ahhh, you see what I was gong to do there.  I think I was hinting at a Hemsworth-type guy who could lure any woman into some "Very Nice, Very Evil" (apologies to Danhausen) night time activities.  

The story also comes with a reference to Broadcast News, of all things.  When Albert Brooks' character is heartbroken when he learns that his crush, Holly Hunter, is entering a relationship with William Hurt...  Albert calls him the devil, and says that the devil wouldn't LOOk like the devil...he would be attractive...and that they'd get all the great women.  

(There's also a lyrical reference to Blue Oyster Cult in my story--BONUS INTERBAY POINTS IF YOU CAN SPOT IT.  Oh, hell, BONUS INTERBAY POINTS if you even remember Blue Oyster Cult or know who they are...)

This was fun to put together and it came together fast.  Love it when it happens.  

But I'm not promising that tomorrow's track will be spooky.  Not sure about that yet.  

Still, for Interbay track #666--could have done worse, yeah?

"Devil's Night" *SoundCloud Exclusive*

...and now for something completely different (which still, somehow, ends up being very Interbay.)  

Once again, I'm not entirely sure if Spooky Week has started slightly early or not...but I think this nightmarish story certainly fits, if it has.  

I've left out some key details of this repurposed tale to keep things mysterious and open for interpretation by anyone who hears it.  If you stare into nothingness, you find for yourself what you see looking back at you.  

Musically, I'm rather proud of this...because it is definitely inspired by the band Dead Can Dance, who managed to blend electronic elements, a goth vibe, and various world music components into a compelling sound.   

At the time, possibly because they were on the 4AD label, Dead Can Dance were considered to be alternative rock and post-punk.  

Another touchstone for the music of "Nothingness" would be the incorporation of Ofra Haza in dance music tracks--like "Pump Up The Volume" by M/A/R/R/S (though not quite as cut & paste as that) or the Gregorian Chants of "Sadeness" by Enigma.  

So, what "Nothingness" incorporates are afrobeat/amapiano rhythms, Balkan singing, electro synths and bass.  

For a song titled "Nothingness"--that's an awful lot.  For an Interbay song--that's...well, I mean...that's just Interbay being Interbay, isn't it?  (You never know what you might get on any particular day's drop.)  

And while the words aren't mine, this time, I can relate to the sense of clarity fading and of longing things that are no longer part of your world, even the parts that used to annoy you are now missed in their absence.  

"Spooky," says Count Floyd.

"Nothingness" *SoundCloud Exclusive*

How does one express the idea of being cursed in a dark techno track?  

(...and am I the only one who loses sleep over questions like this?  Probably.)  

Spooky Week (because there's no single word in the English language that means "ten days" and "Spooky Not Quite A Fortnight But Longer Than a Week" doesn't roll off the tongue) continues with this homage to a very nice and very evil man (who I walked past at a con not too long ago).  

If you follow modern professional wrestling, you know from that description (and the thumbnail) who I'm talking about...if you don't, you don't have to in order to enjoy this epic length dark techno track.  You'll understand all you need to know without having to Google anything.  

(You're welcome?)  

Going back to my original question, once I chose the title (a reference to the main sample), I had to find an answer...and, with a professionally trained wicked sense of humor...I found my answer early this morning (after having fallen asleep with my headphones on and the barebones of this track replaying over and over...influencing the various nightmares I suffered through until, while still asleep, I managed to both take the headphones off and stop FL Studio from torturing me with my own music simply by hitting the space bar).  

Modern dance music is, like stand-up comedy, all about tension and release.  In comedy, there is the set-up followed by the punchline.  In dance music, it is the build leading to the drop...rinse and repeat.  (When I was a club dj, songs might have one build and one drop...hell, some great dance songs didn't have EITHER...now, it feels like songs are ONLY builds and drops--well, in some EDM genres, at least.)  

BEWARE!  HERE THAR BE SPOYLERS!!!  

What could be more "cursed" than to have many builds...but no drops?  Each build just sort of sputters out and starts the next build.  It is the dance club equivalent of blue balls...or, more precisely (why?  Why is it important to be more precise than "blue balls"?) coitus interruptus.  

(Better coitus interruptus than no coitus, am I right?  Besides, I have a lot of good memories of being young and lucky--and coitus interruptus was as much as we could hope for.)  

(TMI?  Yeah, probably.)  

Even if there's a trollish prank at the heart of the creation of this track, I think the track still works--it goes hard, the energy is undeniable, and...much like the major star that this track is in homage to (and "an homage to"--love a language where you look up which is correct only to find out that BOTH are correct)...it doesn't take itself too seriously.  

...kind of like Interbay in general, really.  

Spooky or not, there's a brand new Interbay track dropping here on SoundCloud EVERY SINGLE DAY (so far!)...and they will (hopefully) be spooky for the rest of this month!  You should follow this page and be part of the madness until my heart explodes (yeah--if ever I miss a day posting an Interbay track, send somebody to Phantom Laboratories West to do a wellness check on me.  At least as long as I'm single--and at this point, I'm guessing death will come before that changes.)

"You're All Cursed" *SoundCloud Exclusive*

A tribute to a movie.  A tribute to a decade.  A tribute to some pioneers.  

Today's Interbay track is an uptempo synth pop, nrg, club dance track with guitars.  I think that, had I the tools, I would have made this track 40 years ago--as it is crammed full with all the things that I loved then...and the things I still love, today.  

Want a burst of energy?  Push play.  Want a great road trip song?  Add it to a playlist.  Want to turn back the clock a few decades?  Share this with all of your time travelling friends.  

The title is shared by the movie that is the source for some of the clips in this cut--the movie is a VERY '70s movie, full of car chases and an anti-hero being turned into a populist legend by an enthusiastic radio dj.  Like Smokey & The Bandit, our protagonist has to get from one place to another in a seemingly impossible amount of time, and for various reasons, the police are out to catch him.  The car in the 1971 film, a 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T, was paid homage to by Quentin Tarantino in Death Proof--and for lovers of crazy car chase movies, this is one of the most revered.  

Paying tribute to that movie with a track that feels like the pedal is to the metal and the nitrous is being injected.  The guitars, processed in a very 80s style, give the track a little bit of bite that might have been lacking had it just been synths-based.  

However, I did feel like the track would be missing something if I didn't also sneak in some actual singing in the track--and so, I sent Icarus out to find something that worked...and if you're listening to this track, then Icarus came back with wings unsinged.  

If you're not listening to this track, you're also not reading this...and you can send your thoughts and prayers to Icarus' family--as once again, they've been lured into mortal danger.  

I think it works.  I think it's fun.  It definitely puts a smile on my face and some pep in my step--and I hope it does the same for you!

Well, after a weekend of watching football...how fitting it is that this Monday starts with a punt!  

This is not the track that I originally wanted to post today, but just as we launched Icarus into the sky, the poor soul was blasted by one of the bots laser beams.  (We will try to rebuild him.)  

I'm a bit surprised, as the only thing that could have run afoul of the bots were some movie snippets--and usually the bots ignore those.  Not this morning.  

Luckily, I had another Monday worthy track ready to go today.  Monday's, here, as you may know, are when we reach back to the time when Interbay experiments were posted (along with music videos) on Facebook.  (This would be from January 2023 to May 2024, at which time I switched to posting tracks exclusively on SoundCloud.)  

This recent Monday formula is to take one of those tasks and push it through the Fun Factory that is the RRR protocol.  RRR stands for Rethink, Remake, Remix.  My goal is to take another go at these older tracks with the additional skills that experience have, hopefully, granted me.  It is also a chance to update these tracks to the standards and criteria I have for posting tracks on SoundCloud--for example, all of the tracks that I post on SoundCloud MUST have a vocal element, which was NOT true of all of the tracks I'd posted on Facebook.  

It can be fun to revisit the ideas I had then and see how I might do things differently.  And the end result is a strong Interbay track, even if you aren't at all familiar with the original (though, the tracks are still on Facebook if you want to compare and contrast.) 

This track is a burst of caffeine to wake you up on a Monday morning...or a way to pregame for heading out to the clubs on any night of the week.  Tons of energy in the bouncing bass guitar, the drums, the arpeggios...it is trying its best to live up to being worthy of its central demand that you "Don't Stop Dancing."  

Not sure what will happen to the RRR track I originally tried to post today.  Might have to be locked into the deepest level of The Vault (where only the brave...and perhaps, someday, the Patreoners, will ever have access to it.  We'll see.  I may also put it BACK through the RRR wringer one more time to take out whatever might have angered the bots and try to post it agian in the future.)

Believe it or not, this track started with the idea that I wanted to play around with the same chords that Kate Bush used on "Wuthering Heights".  David Bennett put out a YouTube video describing how strange the chord progression she used was--and to his knowledge, it is the only pop hit song to use that chord progression.  

That's where it started.  

So, how did it turn into...a slow and slightly dark hyper-pop kitchen sink track, which is what you've got here with "Can You Feel My Heartbeat?"  

Oh, that's simple.  

Interbay.  

This is what Interbay does.  It takes a simple idea and finds ways to complicate it and twist it and blend it and bend it until it looks nothing like the simple idea and it sounds like...

...well, Interbay.    

My kid is into Jane Remover, Underscores, Frost Children--so there was a flicker of a thought to make it sound like that--maybe more like Charlie XCX or The Dare, perhaps?  

Nope!  This is 100% Interbay.  :)  

The vocal samples come from Eliminate's "Cyber Vocals 2" sample pack--a nice nod to someone I credit for inspiring me to quit dreaming about making music again and to just dive right into FL Studio.  I will say that it helps knowing what those samples are saying (in other words, the song title) as it might not be obvious if you don't.

Le Club Artemis was the second, of many, run by Philadelphia legend David Carroll.  It is considered to be the first real disco in Philadelphia.  

"It was Studio 54 before there was a Studio 54."

You might see Teddy Pendergrass there...Hall & Oates...supposedly, possibly, Bruce Springsteen (Bruce did discos back in the day?).  

Like all of the classic clubs from back in the day, it is now offices.   Sigh.  

Obviously, I was never able to go to Artemis.  I know, I know, I'm an old--but I was dancing to disco at junior high school dances...not star frequented (and probably cocaine fueled) discos.  Not to mention I didn't manage to get to Philadelphia until a couple of years ago.  It was long gone by then.  

I knew I wanted to do something disco-y today.  I wanted funky bass, I wanted some disco strings, I wanted proper vocals, I wanted some funky guitars, I wanted some percs and hats.  

And I realized, that more than just a disco vibe--I wanted something with a little Philly disco in it.  Something like Bell & James (one of my all time favorites is "Livin' It Up (Friday Night)"--I'd sneak that into sets of current stuff in THIS millennium, even.)  

Of course, this being Interbay, I can't say that I hit what I was aiming for.  There's pieces and parts...but, as always, it ends up sounding mostly like...Interbay.  

It's got a good beat, you can dance to it.  :)  

Oh, speaking of beats...at one point, a college drumline sneaks in there.  Why?  Interbay, obviously.  

I'm happy with this track.  I think it works.  I hope you like it!

"You look like something the cat just dragged in!"  

When I slowed this particular dialogue snippet to the speed it is currently, it sounded like a drag queen reading a rival...and that influenced the rest of the track.  

No, this isn't anything close to a pure diva track--it's goofy and lo fi...and it's a dance track about that dangly thing in the back of your throat.  (You DID know what a uvula was, yes?  You did realize that's what is pictured in the thumbnail, yes?  It's nothing dirty...well, if you don't keep it clean, of course.)

"It'll behoove ya, if you take care of your uvula."  

People of a certain age (you, know...olds) might recognize the dialog...but if you don't, it doesn't matter--it's goofy either way!  

And goofy, for a Tuesday, isn't the worst thing for an Interbay track.  

Sometimes Interbay is serious...and sometimes Interbay is trying to get you to dance to a body part that rarely gets songs written on it.

That's what's fun about posting a track every single day (you DID know that Interbay is doing that, yeah?  A track every single day--for over 550 consecutive days.  It's...insane.  Like this track!)

"Uvula" *SoundCloud Exclusive*

Interbay posts a new track every single day (so far!)--eventually, there simply won't be anything left to write a song about.  

"Hold my chocolate milk," says Interbay.  

So, what is today's Interbay track about?  

It's about a font.  A typeface.  (I know I shouldn't use them interchangeably, but I don't know the difference or which one is correct in this useage, so...better to be safe than story, I used 'em both!)  

I will warn you in advance that this song has a rather short lyric sheet.  It is just the word "helvetica", repeatedly.  

I'd actually written an ode to this font--full lyrics, and everything.  But when I had it voiced, I fell in love with this one particular delivery of the title word.  I dumped the rest of the words and just ran with the one I really liked.  

I think it gives the track almost a witch house feel, without trying to hard.  It sounds like she's chasing someone named Helvetica through some dark woods, mocking her...and letting her know that she's in a lot of danger.  Maybe, she even deserves to be?  

We know what Helvetica did last summer, she hung out with mean girls.  

The mocking energy actually came to this track before the title or any of the words did.  The soprano sax line had this nagging vibe to it...and, serendipity, that line matched up with the vocal delivery of the title that I embraced.  

Again, the haunting and slightly spooky vibe to this came together rather naturally.

Spend a bewildering few minutes with Interbay this Monday morning with another Rethink, Remake, Remix of a track that originally debuted on Facebook.  In its original form, this track was Experiment 52--but now, with the updates and revisions that the RRR process brings to these tracks, it becomes an "Xpansion Xperience."

So, enjoy this trip.  And it IS a trip.  

This is the soundtrack for suddenly realizing that the walls have started to move and the faces of those around you don't look quite right.  Colors seem more vivid, so much so you feel like you can smell the color green and you can taste the color pink.  

It is strange, but it is beautiful.  And you just get past the point of being frightened so you can appreciate this expanded consciousness when the dusty old record needle gets to the inner groove and the tone arm lifts on its own and returns to its off record position, and the record player shuts off...bringing you back to this world...where everything is so depressingly normal.  

(This is how someone who has never done any psychedelics imagines what it would be like...in music.)  

The video that originally accompanied this experiment when it was posted on Facebook back in 2023, included lots of scenes of San Francisco in the late 60s and early 70s, hanging with the freaks in the Haight Ashbury neigborhood...driving around the city at night.  It helped the track provide a dreamy vibe, like you were floating around in time.  

The music does that too...while much of the track is dominated by a heavily effect-laden guitar riff, you will occasionally drift into some double bass driven, brushes on the kit, jazzy blues...and other times, just the hint of modern dance music seems to blend into whatever journey to the past we may have thought we were on...  

...and all lthe time, you hear someone singing "woo woo"s.  (That almost became the name I gave this track after putting it through the RRR wringer--so, as cringe as Xpansion Xperience might seem...it could have been "Woo Woo." )

I'm a little worried about this track because it isn't the typical blend of post-punk and modern electronic dance music that most Interbay tracks end up being--but I think it still fits within the parameters of what Interbay can be.  

If you disagree, you might need to expand your consciousness.  

Not necessarily experienced, but mutated.  

This is one of the RRR mixes where not a lot has changed from Experiment to SoundCloud.  Some additional vocal elements, a slightly rearranged structure, and a new mix and master.

Oh, dear...Interbay's dropped another political track.  And yet, it is funky as all hell.

Who knew you could do that?  

Greetings from Orange County, California.  I've packed up the Phantom Laboratories Mobile Unit and headed to sunnier climes for this holiday week.  But, before that mysterious blazing orb in the sky refreshes me with its Vitamin D...I'm dropping a recently finished track, featuring samples of a current events nature.  

It always tickles me whenever I can take a serious topic and make something that is funky and emminently danceable--and I think I've done so here.  

The only way to find out if you agree with me is to listen--and then give it a like, if you do.  It feels like, lately, I base a good deal of my personal happiness to the metrics of listens and likes, so you MIGHT be creating a monster by pumping those numbers up!  

You certainly can also leave a comment on this page, you can add it to a playlist.  You could repost this track or you could share it.  

Most of all--because, despite traveling from one corner of the contiguous 48 states to another, I'm still managing to keep this consistent schedule of dropping one Interbay track on every day, consecutively, for 560 straight days.  (And when you add in the 140 tracks posted to Facebook--that means that Intergbay has dropped 700 songs ni less than three years.  (And I think that's both pretty cool...and me making up for lost time!)

"Oath" *SoundCloud Exclusive*

"Deep in the water since he young and knew how to swim."  

Sometimes, what you need is some perspective to see options that you might not have even known you'd had the entire time.  That's the story of "Boulevard"--at least from the production side of things.  

I've been working on a song called "Knives" for well over a year.  I was stuck.  I couldn't figure out the right way to put so many different pieces together.  I'd work on it.  Get frustrated.  Save it as is and move on to work on other things.  And then I'd come back to it and the pattern would repeat.  

So, I was resigned to likely defeat when I opened "Knives" up a couple of days ago--and, I will admit that "Knives" is STILL not finished.  But, it wasn't defeat because what I finally noticed is that the reason I was having problems piecing "Knives" together is that it was actually (at least) two separate songs with nothing directly liking them together.  So when I took a suction tube and scooped out the parts that I thought belonged with "Knives", I took what remained and turned it into "Boulevard"--which is the track that Interbay drops today.  

...and it already feels like "Knives" will be a lot easier to finish now that I've chipped away the parts that weren't "Knives" from the marble.   (The only thing that will probably show up in "Knives" that is here in "Boulevard" is the opening vocal snippet.  And that is the appropriate reaction to having just seen Sex Bob-Omb for the first time.  (And the speaker is absolutely too cool for them all--well, maybe not Kim.  Kim will always be cool.)

I mean, they're not even the same kind of songs--"Boulevard" clearly wanted to be uptempo whereas my idea for "Knives" wasn't tied to any pre-conceived tempo.  Even for Drum & Bass, I think "Boulevard" is plenty quick.  Almost gives it a new wave type of feel, more than a deep D&B presentation.  (And I'm fine with that, as you probably have already guessed.)  

I don't do a lot of drum & bass, but it is fun to play with the toys found in that playground.  The reese, the neuro, the subby 808s, the sped-up rap samples, the half-time rap samples.  But then again, there's also a lot of Interbay madness here.  The indie rock/post-punk guitars?  The odd off-time beat switch for those 808s (would definitely break some ankles if you didn't know it was coming!)  The addition of the segments of color bass was part of what I'd meant for "Knives"--but it certainly works here in "Boulevard" even better.  

BONUS INTERBAY POINTS if you can tell the specific Boulevard shown in the thumbnail!  

It is a nice and bright sunny day here in Southern California (you could have guessed that) so I'm going to push myself away from the Phantom Laboratories Mobile Unit and go exploring.  (We're going to try to get to Golf Wang--the clothing/lifestyle store by Tyler The Creator--and who knows what else?)

"Boulevard" *SoundCloud Exclusive*

(Perhaps numbers were down because of yesterday's holiday--but I think "Tryptophan", the Interbay track that dropped yesterday, deserves more ears.  So, give that a listen, please, if you haven't already.  If you like it, give it a like.  THEN come back here and check out this track!  Thanks!)  

You might not recognize this track because it FEELS busy...but this is one of the most minimal tracks that Interbay has ever made.  There are four instruments--a drum machine and three synths.  And there's one female vocalist, singing ethereally--but mostly repeating certain phrases.  

(I know that some of you like the songs where I manage to work in actually sung vocals, rather than the spoken words or dialogue snippets that I often use for a song's mandatory "vocal element."  Well, this is one of those!  Check it out!)  

At 116bpm, "How Does This Feel?" isn't slow...but it is slower than the vast majority of Interbay tracks (don't check my math on that--that's a guesstimate.)  The sound is digifunk--digital and digital sounding elements making funk music.  Or this old white man's approximation of funk--perhaps less George Clinton and more Bill Clinton?  (It's a fair cop.)  

Too fast to be chill, too slow to fill the big rooms--this track is more selective in its appeal.  You've got to like it when various effects are slapped onto the drums, giving it a technological psychedelic feel.  Like, what might the laptop computer equivalent to LSD?  Whatever THAT is...then that!  

The vocals are simple, direct, and heart breaking.  She can't find the way.  (What way?)  The way to describe how does this feel.  And, finally, at the end, she finds the perfect word to sum up how this DOES feel.  (Spoilers, sweetie!)  

I had another track in mind to drop today, but when I opened this up and found how close I'd been to finishing this track whenever it was when I'd put it aside, I knew that I had to get this one polished and off the lot.  Sometimes, you just get a certain "now" vibe from a track--and this one is that.  (Despite it being heavily rooted in some 80s vibes.)  

So--like yesterday's "Tryptophan"...I can only ask that you give "How Does This Feel? (Can't Find The Way)" a listen and a like, if you do.  If you want to, you could repost it or share it with a friend (or more.)  You could add it to a playlist that is missing some digifunk spark. Today is a traveling day for the Phantom Laboratories West crew--we've packed up the mobile unit and we'll be leaving the sunny and warm California to return to...well, you can probably guess what Seattle will be like when we get back.  

So, why not a song about traveling--or, at least...dreaming about traveling.  That's the title of the latest Interbay drop--and uptempo hard house w/lo-fi urges and a woman telling a story about her own dreams.  

Perfect for a Saturday, perfect for getting you moving, and keeping you moving--"Dreaming About Traveling" is a solid entry into the ever expanding catalogue of Interbay songs posted here on SoundCloud.  It is a little dreamy and a little noisy...and when the beat switch happens right as the song comes to a complete stop at the end of the line, you do feel like you've been on a journey.  

And as they're calling our flight, you'll have to accept an Interbay song description that is barely half the length they normally are.  I think you can handle that!  :)

"Dreaming About Traveling" *SoundCloud Exclusive*

"The problem with Interbay," one of my friends once confided to me, "is that there are too many ideas in every track."  

Sharing that comment with you might seem like a humblebrag--it isn't.  At no point did my friend say that they were "good" ideas or even "memorable" ideas.  It was meant as an explanation for why they don't listen to Interbay.  

I know that I have difficulty editing myself--not just in music.  I know now that I have been blessed with a whole alphabet soup of neurodivergence and I get dopamine hits from novelty.  

I want too many ideas.   And, since this Interbay music project is--at least for the moment--about me pursuing my creative capabilities--and pushing them forward--rather than monetization or tailoring my creative efforts on behalf of an audience and their expectations (obviously, I want people to listen to Interbay and like Interbay--if I cynically craft a song that doesn't represent me, but chases trends or follows the formulas that define modern pop or dance music...it wouldn't be any more popular or beneficial to me.), you're getting me making the best music I can as guided by what I find interesting, what I think is good, and sometimes I'll indulge in choices that might not be the choices that others would make, or that the market would dictate.  

So, "Jetsam"  is a fun electronic dance song that balances a man singing about a woman he loves that doesn't love him back, a woman declaring that her current relationship is over because she has no more remaining interest, and a story about a man being tossed over the side of a ship on the sea and left to drown as the ship sails away.  

...even before we talk about the arrangement or the instrumentation of this track, that's already too much.  By some standards.  

For me?  To quote Norville Barnes, "Well, I'm for it."  

This is a classic kitchen sink Interbay dance song.  And I'm hoping you're into it.  I'm hoping you enjoy the rollercoaster ride.  I'm hoping that having made this track helps to inform the tracks I make in the future.  

I may, through experience, gain the ability to whittle down my ideas into something that would draw even more people to these rollercoasters.  I'm not against making music that lots of people can like.  I'm not even against the idea that someday I might make music that people might pay for...

...but at the moment,  at least for Interbay as it is now, too many ideas isn't automatically a bug, it could be a feature of my unfettered brain chemistry expressing itself creatively.  

This is the music that my brain digs.  It would be cool if you happen to dig it too.

"Jetsam" *SoundCloud Exclusive*

"...in this darkness, in this prison..."  

This track began with a simple question.  Can I craft a track that is both spooky and uptempo?  

Generally, I associate "spooky" with a dreamlike quality at a low bpm OR a medium tempo'd dark guitar post-punk vibe.  Could I find a way to find a way to make a properly quick tempo'd track but still make it spooky?  

This is the result.    

"Sometimes the world of the dead gets mixed up with the world of the living."  

The track benefits from a good number of dialogue snippets--which drew the length of the track out a bit.  (Not quite "epic level" Interbay...but, without sounding a thing like it, to a sweet "Bela Lugosi's Dead" sort of length...you'll have to indulge me, I got into it.)  

I made the conscious choice not to complicate the incredibly basic driving pulse of the rhtyhm--despite the tempo, it never incorporates what I would consider drum & bass touchstones (maybe the bass sweeps in the brief halftime section?).  For the most part, this is just a synthwave tech house track where someone accidentally bumped the tempo knob on the Boss Dr. Rhythm...and we just ran with it.

And then, the serendipity of finding a malleable melodic vocal with the right amount of potential spookiness that serves as glue between the music and the dialogue.  

Oh, and I threw in a jump scare at the end...because...Interbay?  

This would have been a good track for next year's Spooky Week, but I couldn't trap it down in the Vault for nearly a year.  (It doesn't HAVE to be Spooky Week to enjoy the spooky side of Interbay does it?)  

No, this track wanted out...and it wanted out right now.  

Here's a torch.  Here's a map that will take you to the scary abandoned laboratory that sits high on the hilltop, overlooking the village, on this dark and stormy night..  Here's my sincere good wishes.  It is your choice to hit play and see what you'll find.

This is, I believe, the second Interbay track to have a song title in German.  (Bonus Interbay points if you can name the other one.)  

The reason for such a conceit was the debt that much of this track owes to Kraftwerk (though that influence fades as the track moves into more club-centric territory.  The tools are mostly the same, just how those tools are incorporated shifts slightly.  

But, it was enough to suggest a title in German, which, in turn, suggested that some of the lyrics could be in German...and the use of a vocalist with a bit of a German accent.  

It "could" be in Turkish, I suppose.  Though that would be a completely random choice (which would not be THAT unusual for Interbay, I suppose.)  

"There is always hope in a delay."  

For most travelers, delays are an annoyance.  You want to get where you're going, so being forced to remain where you are, for an indeterminate amount of time, is frustrating--for most people.  

You could look at delays in a very different way.  It could be time to rethink your plans before you commit to them.  It could be an opportunity to prove the confidence in your decisions and your ability to perservere to achieve your goals.    

Delays, of course, can feel bewildering.  Time can stretch, your sense of it can blur.  It can really mess with your head.    

"I am restless.  Not just my legs, but my whole life doesn't 'fit'."  

And then comes the existential crisis of human existence.  Is there a point?  Is there a goal?  What if what we think of as "life" is just a temporary piece of a larger experience, one we can't conceive of because we lack perspective?  (Cue Plato's Allegory of The Cave.)  

Pretty heady thoughts for a dreary Sunday afternoon and a little synth pop tune that wouldn't immediately suggest such depths upon first listen.    

...forget it, Jake.  It's Interbay.

"Verzögerung" *SoundCloud Exclusive*

"Why do I feel like I'm running in circles?"  

I don't think I ever drew attention to it, but when I was posting tracks (w/videos!) over on Facebook, today's RRR exclusive remix was one of three tracks that I've always considered part of a series of tracks designed to emulate specific nightclub eras.  There was one about disco, there was one about italo disco and then there was this one, which was post-new wave but pre-EDM.  All three of them featured videos of nightclub dancefloors of the appropriate era, giving us a glimpse into an Interbay version of the past.

This being Monday, today's Interbay track is going to be another Rethink Remake Remix of a track originally posted on Facebook (from January 2023 to May 2024.)  Some tracks receive more extensive work to bring them up to SoundCloud-worthy status, but this one was close to ready to go, when I took a look under the hood.  Still, there's always tweaking to get everything tuned up.  

This is a club dance song.  Hand claps, vocal hooks, and some classic Interbay moments of madness.  

The track has three distinct vocalists and their stories serpentine and entwine, leaving the bigger picture to your imagination.  Chances are though, you won't be pondering the math too intently, as you should be getting your groove on.  

I'm not sure even with this RRR that this is the final version of this track.  I think there's room for improvement--but it would mean a major renovation, taking out some of the elements that I've always found quirky and fun about the original version.  

Another issue this track faced was, when re-opening an older project, you don't know what you'll find.  Sometimes samples are missing, plugins don't work, sound patches have been lost.  In this case, the states of a couple of plugins were not saved, and I couldn't quite dial in exactly what I had nearly two years ago now.  I'm not sure what I ended up with is as good as what I had in the original--but, like the Junkyard Digs guys say, "I don't know if it's fixed, but it's different."  

Sometimes, that's enough.  

Not much else to say about this one!  Give it a listen and a like...and all the other things I always ask for at this point in the description.  I will draw attention to my hoping that you'll follow this page for more Interbay.

"Rewind That Night" (exp102 RRR) *exclusive remix*

"This no be trap!"  

OK, did any of you Interbay followers have downtempo dub reggae ska afrobeat techno drill chill on your bingo card for today?  

Believe me, I'm as surprised as you are!  

Some of you may have noticed that I do like the titles of Interbay tracks to start with every letter of the alphabet in somewhat similar ratios--which is a bit difficult with some of the higher point value letters in Scrabble.  So, I knew I wanted to come up with a track with a title that started with the letter "Q".  

...so, my brain starts spitting out Q-words and I land on Quebec.  "What do I know about Quebec?"  

I've never been there--I should.  But I was surprised by how much I knew about the Canadian province--and my brain, ever trained for comedy potential, thought...it doesn't know anything about me.  

Thus, the germ idea for this song was discovered.  But that still doesn't explain how we ended up with the song dropped today.  

French drill bars having nothing to do with Quebec (though the repeated phrase of "pull up slide" informed the thumbnail image)  I through some saturation on those vocals and it reminded me of some of the dub reggae I would hear at Madison, Wisconsin record stores--stores that were tuned to the local community funded public radio station, which I think was WORT-FM.  I don't listen to too much dub reggae (more of a 2-Tone ska fan)...but it was intriguing to work with that influence in mind.  

So, I threw some echo on that vocal.  I came up with the drum patterns.  I came up with the synth patch that sounds like organs (though there are actual organs on here, too--in the faster sections).  I came up with the synth bass and the disco bass guitar parts.  (There's a sub bass section, as well as the afrobeat guitar part--those are samples.)  It came together nicely--a lot easier than I thought it could, considering how this is a genre I've never really attempted before.  

Then, it got interesting.  I put an effect on the vocal--but the effect basically made the vocals impossible to understand (not like it'll be easy for you to decipher distorted and echoing lyrics in French to begin with, assuming that French isn't your native tongue.)  So, I duplicated the vocal, but only put the effect on one of the two--and that's where you get the swirling and slightly glitchy synth noises that put the techno into this track.    

I liked it.  But I didn't think I was done.  So, I wrote lyrics and I got them voiced...but I was conflicted.  

It worked.  But, it changed the vibe.  It went from being a dub reggae-style track to beinga dub reggae-style track smothered by too many spoken vocals.  I liked the space the version before the vocals had.  So, after I produced the version with the full vocal--I went back and took those vocals (mostly) out.  So, I had a vocal version and a dub version.  

If I was still posting tracks on Facebook, I'd post them both--but as I'm posting a track a day here on SoundCloud, I chose the dub mix as the one to drop today.  (Maybe when I open up my Patreon, that b vocal version will become e a bonus track only for Patrons--it is different, longer, with slightly different arrangement and instrumentation.)

"Quebec Doesn't Know Anything About Me" (dub) *SoundCloud Exclusive*

For various reasons, the winter holidays often find me in a melancholy mood...and that can, occasionally, come through in the music made by Interbay.  

I've been a busy little scientist down in the Labs...and it struck me that maybe I was in a feedback loop. 

"I was sad, so I made sad music, which then made me sad" etc. etc. ad infinitum.  (Mmmmm...wallowing.)  

At the time I had this thought, I was working on what I thought was going to be a very minimal tech house track.  Sparse instrumentation, echoes on both any words and maybe some instruments too...and I was going to try not to color in all the empty spots.  

...but that path forward turned sharply...and it ends up sounding like this.  Big gated 80s drums, seven kinds of bass, arpeggios and trance gates, hoovers (HOOVERS!  who doesn't smile when they hear a HOOVER!?) , a shouty vocal talking about putting past mistakes behind and to launch themselves into whatever they can make with the rest of the time they might have left.  

OK, so the melancholy is still there.  ;)  But it is aiming for a more positive reaction--and I've got to say, I've got a goofy smile on my face--as this track packs a TON of punch in a rather short amount of time.  

I took the motivation that this track inspires and I put it in the track.  Why delay the fun when you can start the track off at full speed and with hoovers.  (HOOVERS!!!?!?!)  Why take 32 or 64 measures...8 will do.   4 will do.  Keep it moving, keep it moving.  

The actual song isn't super fast--I mean, 134bpm isn't slow...but there's a TON of energy in this track , whatver the tempo.  

So, if you are prepared for a 2xx4 to the face, smacking you out of your complacency, and willing you to get up and get going wherever you're going...then hit play on "Not Wasting Any More Time" by Interbay.  

You'll either be glad you did...or you'll have a bruise on your face.

"Not Wasting Any More Time" *SoundCloud Exclusive*

I was blessed to be part of the dance music industry at a wonderful time, and I got to meet so many incredible dj's and music producers...most of my dance music heroes allowed me into their world, to see and hear what moved them...and that, in turn, moved me...and lingered with me ever since.  

This might be the most credible house song I've managed to create.  It's not trying to reinvent the wheel.  These are classic house piano chords.  One of the bass parts I play on this is from one of the most popular organ patches found on the legendary Korg M1.  The drums come from a 606.  And I exhibited a surprising amount of restraint, by not over burdening the purity and clarity of what I've created.  

Listening to the mix as I'm about to post it, I can hear potential for a remix already.  (The 606 cymbals and shaker have blurred together to make what sounds like a tape hiss--and then I processed the main vocal samples to be purposefully a little dispersed and fuzzy.  It gives the idea that this is a track found on an old cassette tape, being played with the Dolby switch off (or the Metal tape switch on.  Oh, don't you wish you were an old like me so you'd know what the hell I'm talking about?)  

BONUS INTERBAY POINTS if you can name the sources for the vocal samples.  There is a Venn diagram to express how many people would know all three--but I'm pretty sure that the center includes just me, but I could be wrong.  

I hope that some of my favorite house heads give this track a listen, as I think this is my best effort in that style yet.  While I've enjoyed "learning by doing" and "making mistakes in public" as I return to music production, it is very clear that the post-punk DIY "make some interesting noises" part of my music history--from the days I was in a band and wrote many of the songs we did is the more dominant part of my brain that has re-emerged after a long time being ignored.  The part of me that was a nightclub dj, and specifically the ten years that I only played house-influenced dance music...KNOWS what goes into a track that would generate club play and be appealing to dj's, but I haven't displayed the skill to do so properly--I keep choosing endless novelty when staying locked in the groove is what would be expected.  

This time...I think I got it right.  (So, I guess I should say "Hello!" to Eric Kupper and Richard Payton, because I might be so bold as to send them the link to this one.  If either of them responds by saying that I'm getting closer--I will consider that a W.)

"Day and Night" *SoundCloud Exclusive*

The last Monday of 2025 and time for another exclusive remix of an Interbay track that had been posted on Facebook in 2023.  I give these tracks a Rethink, Remake, Remix...to bring them to a point where I then share the remix here on SoundCloud.  

Sometimes, these RRR mixes can be rather radical.  This is not one of those times.  I changed some effects, I made a few rearrangement decisions, came up with an extra bass part...but other than that, I pretty much left it alone.  

I was planning on doing a remaster--but, in a decision I may either regret or revisit, I left some of the levels hot--as it reminded me of classic soul records.  (If it feels slightly overcooked, let me know...i can run it one more time with the levels brought down.)  

As you know, it is rare for an Interbay track to have a main tag that isn't electronic--but I could find no justification for giving "Workin' Hard" that tag.  The closest thing I could put this bass guitar lead, sax and horns filled, skritchy guitar funky soul thing into was "R&B Soul."  

I should also point out that there are elements of this track that shout that this track is "the dub mix of an original song that I'll never be able to make."--because the vocals on this track are made up of some ad libs, and not enough of them to construct a proper lyric from.  So, I chopped 'em up and tossed them in as a flavoring...it is really the bass and the sax that are the "lead instruments" in this tune.  

I never know what other people will think about songs like this, that stray pretty far outside the normal "either electronic dance music or post-punk" path that most Interbay songs take.  Sometimes, these songs will struggle to get many listens...and then other times they become the most listened to song in the history of Interbay (which would be "Kick Off Your Shoes".)  

Hopefully you'll at least give this a listen, to hear what it sounds like when I leave the power switches on my synthesizers off.  Like it?  Give it a like!  Repost or share it!  Add it to a playlist!  You can leave a comment on it, too.

"Workin' Hard" (exp26 rrr) *exclusive remix*

"A billion miles.  That's how far away you seem to be."

(Whenever an Interbay song underperforms, as far as listens are concerned, I ask people checking out the current song to ALSO listen to the underperforming song--so, please check out yesterday's track, "Workin' Hard" after you check out "A Billion Miles."  Very different but each worthy of a listen, and both are extremely Interbay.)  

"A Billion Miles" has been quite a journey for me.  

Produced mostly on the 5th anniversary of my wife's death, there was some melancholy bound to filter into it.  

Over live acoustic drums, a celeste, a couple of different synth sounds, I managed to put together a section that I thought could be a great synthpop chorus...well, a great but verging on sad synthpop chorus, but that's not unusual for synth pop.

One of the synth sounds I chose to work with was a highly compressed and almost unrecognizable piano patch from a classic Fairlight, and why I stripped that out over those  live acoustic drums, thinking that it might make a good pre-chorus, I heard something that I did NOT put there.  There was something happening psychoacoustically that sounded like someone whispering "A billion miles" just on the edge of being clearly heard.  

So, despite the rest of the song not being worked out yet, I went to write some lyrics around the idea of "a billion miles."  I used to ALWAYS write songs "words first" in my pre-Interbay days...but it is now rare that it do things that way now.  I tried a couple of ideas...the grief of loss was certainly one ingredient, the sadness of a broken friendship was another...and as the words fell together, I recognized that what I'd written could be about a lost dog as much as a partner or a friend.  

I thought the song would be called "Always Have and Always Will", based on the words...but as I started to take my words and insert them into the parts of the song that I already had...I ran into a problem.  The music that I thought would form the chorus of the song...just did not work with either words or singing.  So, instead of a chorus, I'd built an instrumental break.  

Suddenly, I had way too many words and ideas--and what emerged ditched ALL of the "Always Have and Always Will" parts, and most of the verses...and centered in on the idea fo someone being a billion miles away, and how ludicrous of a number (and thus, a distance) really is...  And the idea of expressing a billion with its individual digits turned the chorus turned instrumental break turned back into a sort of chorus for this track.  

And then, I wanted something different for the ending of the track and stumbled into a part that I thought sounded, pleasantly, like Violator-era Depeche Mode.  I liked it so much, I also put it at the start of the track.  

As I said, "A Billion Miles" was quite the journey for me.

"A Billion Miles" *SoundCloud Exclusive*

If you're curious, a querist is a person who asks questions.  It is an archaic word--but I'll take an archaic word for a song title starting with a letter that I don't have many options for words that start with it.  

The drummers sound like jackhammers.  The synths sound like drills.  The vocals warble and leap around, sometimes pure and other times driven through many effects.  There's some dialogue for fans of a certain show or fans of certain people.  The guitars are slashing and processed.    This is some nasty and noisy post-punk with electronic dance and industrial qualities.  

And it takes its own sweet time as it clocks in as one of the longest Interbay tracks shared here on SoundCloud.  

If "A Billion Miles" or "Day and Night" showed you what I could do if I wanted to be nice and not get all weird with everything...then "Querist" should raise a few eyebrows and leave you with some questions.    

And the answer is...yeah, all that and more are definitely Interbay.  

I was not planning on dropping this track on New Year's Eve--I had imagined posting it earlier, but the Christmas spirit changed my plans.  Last year, for New Year's Eve, I posted a fun mash-up medley, perfect for a New Year's Eve dance party (it even had fireworks in it!)--it was "Fun Baby."

...I thought I'd do something like that this year, but instead, I came up with this dark and nasty aggressive thing.  Which tells you a lot about what 2025 was like as a year.  It made some of us dark, nasty, and aggressive...so, perhaps, this is exactly the right vibe to end this year on.  

Well, I hope 2026 won't leave me in such a dark place--or maybe, I hope it does--because I really am getting into the "Querist" as I listen to it while writing this description.  Nothing wrong with being dark, nasty and aggressive (musically, at least.)    

So, if you're out and about amidst balloons and drunks beyond number, with a glass of the cheapest champagne the club could find, in a nice outfit that is a bit disheveled if not completely ruined by now, with a person that you'll likely be able to kiss when the clock strikes midnight, and that damn song that nobody really knows the words to anymore plays...and this all either happens WHILE fireworks are shooting off or right after/right before they do...more power to you!  Have a great night, get home safe.  

Come back to "Querist" when you're in a less festive mood (though, probably not in the morning, as you're nursing a particularly nasty hangover from tonight.  This is NOT a soundtrack for your recovery.  You want the door down the hall, for soothing ASMR or something--and this definitely is not that.

"Querist" *SoundCloud Exclusive*

Sorry this took so long to post--but, for reasons you might guess when you listen to this track...or maybe even from  just the title.  I couldn't start this track until today.    

We're starting this New Interbay Year of 2026 with something moody, atmospheric, and experimental...which somewhat befits the weather we had last night and today here in Seattle--as we've been socked in with fog.  (The thumbnail is a picture from last night's New Year's Eve fireworks at the Space Needle.)  

Driving in town last night was like driving through 1950s London...in a black and white movie.  It was all thick fog.  

So, that has influenced the music I made for this, the first Interbay track of the year.  

It should make a pretty good soundtrack for driving through fog--or relaxing after getting where you were driving through that fog to get to...  

Or maybe not.  When the bass and the drums come in, there's definitely some tension building in this track.  

I think that Icarus is in no danger, but if this track suddenly changes or disappears, that's probably why.  

It is always a delight when I get to work with strings.  I'm not an orchestral composer, but getting to use and abuse such classic elements is truly one of the wonders of this modern technological world.  

The track is definitely more about vibe, so you probably won't notice that there are pieces of parts in this song that are not in the same time signature (which is why I claimed the tag "polyrhythms" for "Nothing Changes."  I think it all still works, and the slightly disorienting feeling of when a snare doesn't happen when you think it will, or when a pizzicato string ensemble comes in too soon, or when echoes suddenly start feeding back on themselves--that was all intentional...and that contributes to the vibe.  

I think.  Find out for yourself.  Give "Nothing Changes" a listen.  Give it a like.  Repost it, share it, add it to a playlist, leave a comment on it.  All of that helps this project grow.  

Speaking of growth.  I am hoping to get to 500 followers before the end of 2026 (a huge goal, because I had hoped to get to 400 followers before the end of 2025, and didn't get that close to making it.)

"Nothing Changes"  *SoundCloud Exclusive*

"The path to follow has become unclear."  

That's the message from today's Interbay track--but I can guide you!  After you listen to today's epic tech house industrial mutant pop track, check out yesterday's track, "Nothing Changes".  It is about as different from today's track as you can get--but both are worthy of a listen...and both are absolutely Interbay.  

It was a question up until last night at 8pm whether the first song of 2026 would be "Nothing Changes" or "Unclear".  They both felt appropriate for the first day in the year after a difficult year's end.  I guess I was feeling more melancholy yesterday...and rather angry today.  

Yes, it's another political track from Interbay.  I don't do these often, but occasionally I'll turn my eyes towards current events and let what I see influence the music I end up making.  And, with so many "year in review" videos popping up on the run up to New Year's eve, it struck me that some absolutely insane things are being treated as if, somehow, this is the new normal.  

It is infuriating--and I'm not entirely sure how we dig ourselves out of this...if half of this country is not only fine with how things are being done, but are actually supporting this madness.  And that half earnestly believes that the other half shouldn't exist.  They believe that anyone that disagrees with them is a radical terrorist and supposedly an enemy combatant.  

America hasn't always lived up to its ideals, but the general trend had been to learning from our mistakes and trying to do better.  The more we erase the gains we've made in the previous six decades, the more we ruin our reputation and our trustworthiness around the world...the less this feels like America at all...all in the name of supposedly making us great again???  

This track might not be sonically aggressive as "Querist" was (the track that posted a couple of days ago--also quite good, if you haven't you should check THAT one out, too!  But it is fueled with energy and aggressive sounds...and the more information piles up, the more insanity is simply spoken aloud, the more traditional structure falls apart.  The structure is there, early on...before you start hearing any spoken words...but, by the end, it all starts to stack up on itself, glitches out, and soon it's not quite chaos...but it is disorienting and I think it conveys the uncertainty of how to get to a better future.  

Yes, the music matches the theme of the song.  I really feel like the current political situation is a lot like driving at full speed on the Interstate, surrounded by traffic also going full speed...and you have to choose an exit immediately...and you have know idea which one will take you where you want to go.  The signs are confusing, your GPS has just admitted that it has given up and that you're on your own, and if you don't get off the highway...you're going to crash...because we all seem to be racing towards a dead end.  

Ummmm...happy new year?  

I think it could be.  Not sure I'd put money on it.  Not sure I believe it will be.

But...though it sometimes feels hopeless, I'm holding onto a little bit of it.  And though this might feel overwhelming, I think that "Unclear" is the best wway I can process things.  It gets it out of my head and into my feet.  (Your mileage may vary, of course.)

"Unclear" *SoundCloud Exclusive*

Sometimes, Interbay songs can be hard to describe--because they can be many things...sometimes all at once or other times seemingly randomly (it's not random to me...but the chances are good that you're not me.)  

This one, though...might be the easiest one yet!  

This is a disco song.  A disco house song.  A funky disco house song.  A funky disco house song with strings and brass.  A funky disco  house song with strings and brass and glitchy techno synths.  

OK, well, I think you probably could have gotten it with just "disco"...  You can fill in the blanks yourself, right?  

This song feels like it has a full vocal--but, actually, it only uses six different words.  I call that efficiency!

So, this is an efficiant, funky, disco house song with strings, brass, glitchy techno synths, and surprise.  Surprise and fear.  Look, I'll come in again.  

This may simply be the poppiest Interbay track yet--but I do think there are deeper elements that keep it out of the cheese shop.  (Not much of a cheese shop, really...even though it is so clean.)  

Now, if you would have told the angsty twenty something who was in post-punk bands including one named Cremation Dance that there would come a day when he'd be pleased that he's just share a new track titled "Only For Love"--I think he wouldn't believe you.  Unless there was a twist, like the lyric actually was "(I Would Die For You, but) Only For Love"--could make that title dark and kind of gothy, I bet.  

But nope...this is pretty straight forward disco song about a happy relationship.  (Didn't know I had it in me!)  

(Trainspotters might notice that I've chopped some of these vocals up in a way that is reminiscent of a great late period Devo song, "What We Do".  Yow! Indeed!)

Hope this helps your first Saturday night of 2026 be a little funkier.  :)

"Only For Love" *SoundCloud Exclusive*

A bit cheeky of me to include the "uk garage" tag to this latest Interbay track.  If anything, this is New Hampshire garage.  

This is the a big day for Interbay, so, if you have any bubbly left over from New Year's Eve, pour yourself a glass and join this toast--as this is the 600th Interbay song posted here on SoundCloud...one a day, everyday, for 600 straight days.  

I had produced a track purposefully when we hit the #500 mark--but, though this is a very big round number and an achievement that everyone here at Phantom Laboratories West is quite proud of...nothing thematic about the number 600 came to mind.  ("THIS IS SPARTA-SPARTA!!!"--that's as close as I got.)  

Instead, "Undertoad" is simply the next song up.  I think this is a good choice for a January Sunday.  Let me know if you agree.  

If the title of this song doesn't mean anything to you, perhaps the story being told in this track will intrigue you.  It is based on an excerpt from the John Irving novel, "The World According To Garp"--though, I've adapted it to reduce confusion and also to make it work as a snippet of an audio play, which is the conceit that informed this track.  (Apologies to Mr. Irving for my hubris--and this track will never be monetized.  Consider this an homage from a fan--it may be the most influential novel that I've ever read in my life.  And so was the movie, but in very different ways.    

If you are familiar with a story, then you know how deceptive this track is.  It feels funny and even slightly upbeat.  But it is full of dread and ultimately terribly sad.  Tragically sad.  

And that is why you always have to watch out for the Undertoad.  

This might not be the only time I take inspiration from the life of the bastard son of Jenny Fields and his life...but this one is special, as it becomes the 600th Interbay SoundCloud track.  (When you add in the 140 tracks that were posted to Facebook, before I started posting here on SoundCloud--this is the 740th Interbay song produced in the last 3 years. )

"Undertoad" *SoundCloud Exclusive*

As this is Monday, the 601st Interbay track posted on SoundCloud is an exclusive-to-SoundCloud remix of a track that originally debuted back in 2023 on Facebook.  What was Experiment 31 has gone through the Rethink, Remake, Remix process and this is the result.  

Experiment 31 was important to me--it was really the first time that I'd really been able to express something deeply personal in a song since the birth of Interbay...really since the early 90s.  

I was diagnosed with an alphabet soup of neurodivergence just as Phantom Laboratories West opened up and the Interbay music project began.  That diagnosis, revealed while dealing with grief and significant life changes, made so much of my earlier life make a lot more sense to me (and remember, I am definitely an old--so, there's a lot of life to think back on, with a completely different lens about who I actually was and why I struggled with certain things.)  

This was really the first time I tried to express this revelation...and while the song was good, for what I was doing at the time, it was really the video that I'd made for it--because, when I was posting tracks on Facebook, I'd make a video for every track I posted...(which took too long and was the major reason I switched to posting to Facebook.)   The video was filled with flashes of images of so many of the things that I was obsessed with at the time, or throughout my life...all a mad jumble where you can only clearly make out patterns in the aggregate.  It was like getting to see the rush of information that plays constantly on a loop in my brain.

So, putting that experiment through the RRR  process was centered around "how do I express myself on this topic without having visual imagery to get that same idea across?"  How do I make you hear what my brain is processing at all times?  

Beyond just a better mixing and mastering job and swapping out a couple of synthesizer patches, I turned to various effects to get a stuttery glitching effect on some added dialogue snippets.  If it sounds like madness--well, that's by design.  

In the video, I specifically thanked Jessica McCabe--who runs the YouTube channel "How To ADHD"  I stumbled onto her videos at the perfect time for when I was seeking answers and perspective.  It solidified the diagnosis in my mind and allowed me to embrace such a radical reframing of who I am and who I always was.  So, some of what you hear glitching in this RRR of "This is How My Brain Works" are her words...not that you could really pick that out of all I did with it.  

If you find the glitchiness annoying--I get that.  I used it like I might have used a pad sound--it isn't supposed to be where your main attention goes...it is just supposed to become a wash in the back of your mind.  So, I didn't make the glitching so extreme that it would be unlistenable--but of course your mileage may vary on whether I achieved that.  

I drop these RRR versions on Mondays...at least for now.  It's a good way to see how added experience and growing confidence can be shown directly.  It is the kind of think you could appreciate even more if you FOLLOW this page, because there is fresh Interbay dropping EVERY SINGLE DAY (and this is the 601st consecutive day that's been true!)
