We walked downhill
To the City of God
The way was steep
The gradient odd.

Down that hill
Steep and cold
Ever closer
To that city old.

Massive buildings
Shady paths
Puzzling signposts
No live hearths.

 
Walked along
Narrow lanes
Twisted into 
Strange arrays.

Everywhere
Empty halls
Empty windows
Empty doors.

Angelic names
Above the frames
Flower beds
Not maintained.

 
City of gardens
Now a mausoleum
For all those lost
In eternal dream.

At city’s edge
We found Paradise Park
Apple trees
An antique plaque.

Saying, here
Adam and Eve
Met a serpent
Whom they did believe.

And from here
They did depart
This was the straw
That broke the city’s heart.

Writer of prose and poetry since mid-1960s. Given an acoustic guitar in 1978 by long-suffering sister. Many songs produced that way. More recently, guitar skills all but faded, using GarageBand and Logic Pro to put words to music.
