Happy Family

(from Isaiah 44:13-22)

the chippy stretched his rule
he laid out a line
he fitteth it with planes
that it remain inside
the figure of a man
with compass made his mark
beside the smithy's coals
and hammer blows and sparks

he's hewn the cedar tree
the cypress and the oak
for some to make him strong
for some to make him smoke
for some to make him bread
to burn himself his meat
for some to make him god's 
to worship at their feet

and when the day is done
and carpenter is cold
with some he warms his flesh
with some he warms his soul
with some he makes him bread
with some he burns his meat
with some he's made him god's 
that's value in a tree

they can't understand 
they don't know
He has shut their eyes
hearts are closed
none will consider..
who will say?
"Save some wood for bread..
 and praise what remains!"

O FEED.. YOU FEED ON ASH!
O HEART DECEIVED!
YOU'VE TURNED ASIDE FOR LIES
AND FEEL FOR TREES!

Remember these.. O Jacob
I formed thee.. my servant
Israel.. I remember thee
In this mist, I blot sin
Come to Me!

The Narrow Gate

Carry me.. down the aisle,
Carry me down to the soil.
It's been some time since you left,
I can't hear your voice no more! 

Something went wrong in my soul,
Gotta find my way back to your door.
So bury me by the narrow gate..
Where I kissed you years before. 

Left behind..without sense,
Of my time..how it's spent.
Laden with sacrifice..
And the weight of my regret! 

Oh.. how I've longed for your face!
Will you come now 
Beside death's door?
And bury me by the narrow gate,
Were you held me years before. 

Quickly now..comes the night,
And all labour's come to end
A little embers waining light..
For all men before the abyss!

As Through Fire 

Stolen days, wasted years
I recall.. there were tears
There was pain 
and there was sin
There was always some other
fix we're in

But that dope didn't last
Like your tires peelin' away
from me fast
You were gone, and I was here
Holding on to something else
that wasn't clear  - yeah -

Honest work.. for honest pay
Thought that maybe I could
bleed the pain away
Medicate.. to forget
There's a fire on the blood
in the brain
 
But that hope.. wouldn't leave
Beat a drum & blaze a trail
to my retreat
Find me underneath the rock
where I hid
Ya poke me with a stuck,
where I miss a rib  

It's a lonesome place.. 
Where I find
Quiet.. from.. the noise
Just to close my eyes.. maybe
See.. more.. than cold stone
Breath in, breath out.. 
Maybe feel the fire.. warm.. Again, and lose all track of time
And I'll wish you well
And open my eyes
And walk home in the dark

Never day, never night
Just a gray.. barren sight
But my muscle-memory 
is coming back
And my vision quickly fades
into black

It's a drug, its a fiend
It's a vampire bat looking lean
You were gone, and I was here
And my trigger-finger itch
is hard to bear      - sold -

There's a saying.. convicts see
"EAT THE STOLEN BREAD IN SECRET WHILE ITS SWEET!"
It's the Drip.. acquired taste
You might think that you won't like at first, but wait..

Look around.. See them gates?
They're all open here
but nobody escapes
And I pray that God'll see me
where I'm hid & 
Poke me with a stick,
where I miss a rib

I can see you, you're not far away
As close as the wind on my face
The windows all show 
The frost of your breath
And summer nights humid with rain 

These waters or visions 
I can't comprehend
Exhausting my faculties
Leaving me sleeping
And waiting for you.. 
To wake me again
To wake me before I am dead 

The impatient sky is vacant of stars
The landlord has pierced 
Them with rings
The bolides have grown..
So weary of chains
They pirouette 'pon scarlet threads 

They're waiting for words
That bring birth to life
A freedom from certainty
That death can provide
They're waiting for you
To wake them again

They are dead 

Can you see me?
I feel I'm alone..
Whenever I'm lost in my head
Alone as a leaf, expecting to fall
From the weight 
Of the dew of my sins 

These infinite mirrors
I can't comprehend

there's not enough days 
To right all the hell that you raise

you just walk away

the closure you seek..
Is like a letter, delayed

Have tarried to long in the sea..
To make a reply
