For Trushmix 172 we got Kim Dürbeck straight outta Sandefjord Norway. The techno and jungle producer is part of the younger generation of producers from Norway, operating in the outskirts of the Oslo scene. Active producing new music and live sets.     

For Trush he made a mix mainly jungle related in style, with a few detours through different sounds and genres, a fun trip through the sounds and inspirations of Mr Dürbeck!

It’s hard to think of a label as reliably great as Lillerne Tapes. Since launching in 2007, the cassette imprint has become an anchor of the lo-fi and experimental ambient music world, its output ranging from contemplative dance to musique concrète to more abstract productions, with releases from the likes of Forest Management, mdo, Rhucle and Ulla Straus, to name just a few.

The man behind the prolific label is Gabe Holcombe. In 2021, he’s already put out three excellent releases from José María Delgado, jung dj and more eaze, all of which are worth checking out. While the label still retains its local, DIY feel, Holcombe doesn’t just release his friends’ music. Last year, he also tapped into Australia’s underground scene, releasing music from Melbourne’s Yunzero and Other Joe.

The label’s varied discography serves as an illustration of Holcombe’s sound palette; it’s rich in warm, fuzzy textures, tape hiss and subtle, often beautiful melodies. His mix casts a similar spell. Most of the songs come from ambient tape labels circa 2012—“reliable favourites”, in his words. Over 50 plus minutes, he weaves together music from the likes of Bermuda Link, Hakobune and Motion Sickness of Time Travel, creating the aural equivalent of a warm blanket.

Thrilled to share this new momentous Body Mix by beloved Melbourne via Toronto DJ @jenniferloveless We fell in love with her DJ sets at a small Tasmanian festival back in 2016 when she played "It's gonna rain" in the morning rain. She describes her latest release, Water, on @buttersessions as fun and frivolous and I think those words apply here as well, not to mention powerful and invigorating!

AM: We loved your mix a lot, where and how did you record it? Was there a theme behind it?

Glad you liked it! I recorded the mix in my studio with a moody xone mixer and x2 xdjs on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. I’d say the theme is release. After the drag of a 9-5 week that sacred studio time on the weekends can be so special, especially with the current Montreal curfew. Channeling that ‘living for the weekend’ vibe here with some low-slung bass music I've been digging lately.


AM: We’re big fans of your label ISLA, how did it come about?

Thank you for listening! Isla was born out of a desire to document the music happening around me. I bought a used tape duplicator from a church in Abbotsford and started making very small tape runs of friends’. It’s grown a bit since but it's still just me putting whatever I’m excited about.


AM: We think Ambien Baby is fantastic, love Sophie too from when we had her down to play in Brighton, how did you guys come about forming the duo?

Oh thank you! That’s my best friend and soul sister. We’ve known each other since we were teens. AB is a reaction to our friendship and a vessel for us to explore sound & collaborate. 


AM: Out of music what are your interests? 

I'd say the interests are vast and ever-mutating!  In general, they lay in music rituals [music making/consuming], music’s therapeutic qualities, and its tireless research/ quest for its historicity.  


AM: Whats next for you this year? 

Finishing loose ends for some recording projects that have been in the works for some time, putting out some records im very excited about and learning how to tap/ dance flamenco.

"I felt compelled to make this mix during my mandatory hotel isolation period, depicting certain moods I was flowing in between; reflective, sensual, longing, hope... suspended in time. The tracks are very special to me and remind me mostly of missing loved ones. I really wanted to focus on speech and lyric - especially female vocals. The mix is actually a vessel for femine energy and some of what that represents to me. Snippets from the “100% Genuine” CD released on Rephlex records have been woven throughout the mix, a collection of real phone recordings from a dating agency."

Wonja (@wonj) is an elite level record collector. The Oakland-based DJ and producer has been putting together mixes for many years that are filled with music that is hard to describe, let alone to find. From teary-eyed Italo disco to her series of Wood Glass Metal mixes via world music and more club ready sounds, she is a Jedi-level digger who also occasionally produces solo, or with partner Dan as Motoko & Myers. Her main priority, though, is to devour and share as much music as possible.

This week's podcast is a two hour trip to the outer edges of Wonja's collection that her partner describes as "hard sci-fi party tracks." It is a wide open and spacious selection where alien details, solar pulses and cosmic motifs all drift by as scattered percussion only hints at the most skeletal rhythms. Nothing about the tracks is at all familiar, and all genre terms are redundant. Even when more propulsive grooves do arrive, the sound sources are wonderfully weird and abstract, yet the desire to dance is as primal and compelling as ever. Few mixes are as full of WTF?! moments as this one.

Originally hailing from southern Florida, she spent her formative years in New York as a curator immersed in this multi-faceted and highly-charged scene. She crafted her own niche swiftly, and ever since then has worked tirelessly to champion and center the sounds and creators that moved her the most. From her resident nights at Nowadays, her regular shows on The Lot Radio, to her increasingly frequent sojourns to dance floors across the globe and mixes featured in Fact, Pitchfork and Resident Advisor, she’s bringing the frequencies and sounds that taught her to as many people as she can, and in a voice that is unmistakably her own.
