In music and art it’s so easy to know who is full of passion, you can see the love in the job. This is exactly what happens to Kriss, the name behind Life Recorder.

       Djing since the mid 90'ies and starting to produce in 2006, the French label owner found his musical influences into Detroit Techno and Chicago's House, being all connected to his own roots, feelings, and life.

	With a release on Detroit's imprint Aesthetic Audio and with some records on Bokhari Records in London or Grounded in Humanity in Madrid, Life Recorder's music signature continues to shape up and to follow its own way trough time, experiences and connections.

	Starting his label Life Notes Recordings in 2017 and releasing his own production as Motion Process on it. “Life Notes Recordings is born from an artist perspective to keep sharing a personal vision through the emotional spectrum of techno/house music and beyond connected to life movements.”

	In 2018 Life Recorder releases “Pressure Jazz EP” in Hizou Music, the 12" LN002 "Outside The Algorithm" in his own label and later that year he contributed a track to the LP vinyl compilation on UK's Verdant Recordings, alongside XDB, Leonid, etc... This year Kriss has the LN003 release incoming on Life Notes Recordings. Too much music for your pleasurable listening.

Hylo Series #01 - Priori

Austrian music obsessive Heap is someone who always digs deep into the past, but also the present. His empire includes Discus Throwers, which is a concept store that deals in special gems from the world of house, techno, synth pop and kraut, as well as his Neubau label, productions on labels like ESP Institute and Berceuse Heroique and DJ sets that can be brave and beguiling or banging and brash.

For this week’s mix, Heap keeps it deep with a selection of leggy and gently cosmic disco tracks early on. His is a thoughtful take on the genre, with expansive tracks that could be brand new or 30 years old all sitting nearly next to each other. As things grower darker and more intense later on, elements of acid, electro and proto-house all make for a colourful and late night trip.

MFM: Hey Cris, you're originally from The Hague and still live there, correct? How is the music scene over there, is it different from the rest of NL?

D: Yes, born and raised! Well, The Hague has always had a big Indie and Rock reputation. Needless to say, electronic music has always been there, but maybe not as exposed to daylight as it does right now. For me the foundation has always been the Cybernetic Broadcasting System. There used to be kind of a government issued ban on ‘house’ and ‘dance’ music, because of some stupid ass brawls in a club. Luckily there’s a whole new crew of young guns, clubs and organisations, doing amazing things for electronic music in The Hague. So I’m super stoked to be here at this time and place. I guess you can say, that there’s kind of a difference between The Hague and the rest of NL. We’re a small town hahah. 

MFM: How important is playing instruments to you in the process of producing music as Dazion?

D: I would say, it really does give me a lot more playroom, if I add more instruments to my process. I mean, it’s so sick to learn how to play a new instrument. Last year I picked up the flute, and just decided to give myself a deadline, so I have to do it in front of a live audience. Hahah I know it sounds crazy, but it really works for me! In general I feel like people tend to be a bit hesitant towards learning to play instruments. But you would be surprised, how fast it can go, once you dive into it. I can’t read notes, and most musicians would probably kick my ass, if they would ever analyse my consistency, or use of notes hahah, but I am friends with my imperfections. So buy a kazoo! Do it!

MFM: Do you have certain traditions or workflows when in the studio?

D: Oh, I’ll start anywhere….hooking up cables, and spend 30 mins looking for a power supply, or just randomly press some keys. The thing is: I have this super tiny workspace/studio, that is kind of packed with gear. I’ll probably start with my go-to tool, which is a set of Samson c-02 condensator mics, and start recording percussive stuff. Could be a piece of wood, or metal. I’ll probably end up shaping the audio file, and start tweaking with effects. I really love looping stuff through guitar pedals. It hisses a ton of white noise because of shitty connections, but that, to me, adds to the sound. Once I have something I like, I’ll start experimenting with some of my rack synths. I Have a Roland Super JV that I’m really fond of. Most of the time, some weird combinations emerge, and I’ll take it from there!

MFM: Your new EP again includes vocal contributions. Do you seek for collaborations on purpose while writing music, or do they happen spontaneously as well maybe?

D: It’s not a real ‘must’ for me, but in a certain style of production, it just gives it an extra dimension. Especially if it’s in a different language. It’s actually more like…’oh this might sound sick with a (let’s say) so and so vocal on it’! I’ll have a vocal melody in my head, and once I’m meeting with the artist, I’ll start singing it to them. As a guideline. I always get a great reaction, because I REALLY can’t sing. But I somehow manage to get my intention through. It’s always a combined effort, because they know how to approach certain steps better that I do, so I’m like: ‘lets do it your way!’ Hell, I’m the one that takes notes here haha.

MFM: Did you have any particular idea or goal in mind when preparing or making the mix?

D: Well, as far as doing a mix, I think it might be cool if it’s more of a listening thing…I love to get out the weird stuff. I’ve been making rips for like two days, so yeah let’s see how you guys like it hahah.

BSS Radio Episode 057 with Steele Bonus

An improvised and mostly unrehearsed three turntable Techno throw-down, performed live at the temporal point in space-time that is Freerotation Festival.

The last time I played an up-tempo Techno set like this at Freerotation was in 2011, and I’ve been pestering Steevio to let me bang it again ever since - this was the year it finally happened. 
Set times aren’t announced until the day, so it was as much of a surprise to me as anyone else to find out that I would be playing the closing set in that room.
After a night of excellent live & DJ sets from the highly talented women I had the honour of sharing the bill with, I had to be on top of my game to maintain the energy levels at the high bar they had set. 
My aim was to keep the tempos up around 137 BPM, make good use of all three turntables, improvise as much as possible in a spontaneous way by keeping the rehearsing to a minimum, and stay as present in the moment as much as I could possibly be.
I worked out the intro and the first couple of tracks, but then kept it mostly freestyle after that, which led to some unexpected twists, turns and inspired moments that kept me on my toes, and the crowd buzzing. 
This was one of those special nights where the amazing and supportive crowd gave so much energy, that it fed straight back into the music, which then began to feel like an energy flowing right through you, that pulled you even deeper into the moment. 
Presence!
I was ecstatic to  have been so well received by the large crowd that had gathered, it was an honour & a privilege to hold the space for 90 minutes, and a joy to have the opportunity close the room on such a high. 
Unfortunately some of the amps developed a fault, causing them to overheat & create a nasty burning smell, so the set had to be brought to an abrupt end to avoid causing a fire. 
An unmet demand for a final tune rampantly ensued, I loudly and regrettably responded “The Amps Are On Fire!!”, to which someone remarked “of course they are, you did a good job”, which I felt was a fitting end to a smoking night of Techno-music, that was pure heat from start to finish! :)
