String Quartet, No. 1: A five-movement work played without breaks between each:  
1.	Adagio, teneramente
2.	Allegro con brio (2:37)
3.	Prestissimo leggiero (6:04)
4.	Presto vigoroso (8:29)
5.	Molto largo (affettuoso con espressivo) (10:18)

Overall in an arch form with the second half of the central movement being a retrograde of the first half.
 
I wrote this as a student work back in 2001-2002 and I’ve only just got around to blowing the dust off and making a MIDI version of it.  When I first wrote the string quartet it was going to be performed (I think, if my memory serves me correctly, by the Belcea String Quartet), but one of the players unfortunately broke an arm so it got shelved.

I’m afraid I don’t remember too many of the details surrounding the composition. Only that it is semi-serial in that I used a set group of five pitches that permeates the music throughout – all the usual techniques such as transposition, inversion, retrograde etc.

String Quartet, No. 1

This is a composition whilst studying music some years ago. It is heavily influenced by the music of Olivier Messiaen (in particular his work Quartet for the End of Time) in harmony, rhythm and theme (Messiaen was a devout Catholic and much of his music reflects his belief). My composition is designed to be a reflection on the Biblical story of St. Peter’s three denials of Jesus; then being forgiven and called upon three times by Jesus to lead his people. In the first half of the composition there is a strong emphasis on the fall from G sharp to G natural (to express the ‘fall’ of St. Peter – stated three times in the introduction on the cello surrounded by ascending and descending piano octaves on these two notes). The cello, representing St. Peter, plays almost continuously an expressive line to reflect his sorrow and anger. The clarinet, representing Jesus, begins a contrasting line to reflect the separation of these two characters. The clarinet does not return until about 3’55; the first of three entries as Jesus begins to forgive St. Peter. Each time the clarinet enters it aims to pull the cello with it to emphasis now an ascent from G natural to G sharp. The piano, quite separate from the other two instruments, plays an expanding isorhythm after the introduction. The isorhythm begins with a sequence of seven values rotating between a progression of three chords. This progression gradually expands to eleven chords before it reverses itself. My composition is not designed to be programmatic, more a reflection and meditation on the denial of St. Peter and his consequent redemption. The piece is also not intended to express any personal religious belief. Unlike Messiaen I am not a Catholic, but I used the Biblical story as a source of inspiration whilst studying his music.

Final Battle

A solo piano piece I wrote a number of years ago. When I wrote it I originally had in mind the idea of the sea; not necessarily depicting it, rather aiming to reflect moods associated with it. However, I found this a little pretentious and I haven't settled on a formal title. Despite a tumultuous opening, the general mood of the piece is one of calm and restraint. Short motifs develop a little and work their way through the piece to keep a fairly tight structure. I hope you try to listen all the way through (it might be hard to listen to for some ears!) and that you like/appreciate it in some way! Any constructive comments are, as with all my music, most welcome.
