We're big fans of Balearic and its sunkissed sons and daughters here at BR HQ - just check the glowing write-up of Jack J  for evidence. It may be a good few months out of season, but on "Having A Coke With You", New Jackson and Permanent Vacation are looking to next summer already.

The Dublin producer takes his sweet time, studiously layering the atmosphere over 10+ minutes before bringing it all to a momentous climax worthy of space disco king Lindstrøm himself. I mean, the man showed up to play for our Hivern Discs showcase in Primavera in an all-white suit - we should have known he meant business all along.

Right in time for Luises third Birthday, Munichs incarnation of volt and watt, namely Guenther Lause, comes along with a very special present. The Wakema EP is a three-track-voyage from the outer spaces of universe back to the very inner circuits of conscience. Starting with Ruka (A), an antsy techno piece, Guenther seduces to enter his spaceship. Soon after, hiding between space and time, Loose Your (B1) invites to take a bummel on planet Ephraim located far outside where human awareness turns into a flock of silver bambis. Finally, slowing-down Wakema (B2) brings us ashore cheerfully. 

The digital release comes up with additional and well constructed extra fuel from astroman Andre Wakko.

Having released two records over the past four years, Wesley Matsell isn’t exactly in a rush to satisfy our musical appetites. After a tip off from Nathan Fake back in our interview in February, who praised Wesley’s productions, we started to take note of the Welshman’s output.

Early 2012 saw the release of Wesley’s highly acclaimed ‘Zones Within Zones‘ EP on Axel Boman and Petter Nordkvist’s Studio Barnhus label, a combination of jacking house grooves and heavily swung synth arpeggios. Wesley also released an excellent remix of Taragama Pyjarama’s ‘Balibat‘ and a cosmic remix of Phil Kieron’s ‘Le Carrousel‘. From what we’ve been told Wesley has big things lined up for 2013, including a potential release of a new record on Border Community.

For those of us who are based in London, The Hydra have invited Border Community to see us off into the New Year and Wesley Matsell will play alongside James Holden, Nathan Fake (live), Luke Abbott (live) and special guest Ivan Smagghe. Tickets are almost gone, so you better be quick.

Highly in demand as a vocalist, Alice has recently guested on Talking Heads leader David Byrne’s solo LP, to add to collaborations with Mr Scruff, Quantic, DJ Yoda and Nostalgia 77. But it’s her solo records with longtime musical partner TM Juke that she is best known for, and they have borne some of the most arresting blues soul since the glory days of Aretha. “We’ve both got a very open approach to writing songs,” Alice explains of the prolific relationship, “Our influences run from Sarah Vaughan to Bach, Kate Bush to Arvo Part, and J Dilla to Alice Coltrane. We love everything from dirty, squelchy dubstep to old school soul. We nudge each other in the right directions.”

‘To Dust’ sees Alice exploring every letter of the soul lexicon and beyond to create her own dynamic sound; from the punchy, Prince-esque strut of “Hard And Strong” to the epic intensity of the title track, which could easily be the next Bond theme. Through the heartstring tugging “I Loved You”; the sonically smooth yet emotionally raw “Twin Peaks”; to the pulse-quickening build of “Let Go (Breakdown)” and psychedelic social consciousness of “Citizens”, Alice Russell is never less than scintillating as she displays emotions so real you feel you could reach out and touch them, and a voice of unparalleled versatility. The idiosyncratic structure of the record, peppered with interludes and reprises, makes for a unique listen and a satisfyingly whole ‘album’ experience.
