Piano version of the theme from the movie "Somewhere in Time" starring Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour. This film was a romantic fantasy film from 1980 and has acquired cult status due to the acting of the late Christopher Reeve, the Superman actor and its soundtrack. It also includes the 18th Variation on a Theme from Paganini by Rachmaninov.

This 2004 English drama was directed by Charles Dance and starred Dame Judi Dench and Dame Maggie Smith. The violin featured in the soundtrack was played by Joshua Bell and the theme music was written by the contemporary English composer Nigel Hess.

The Andante from Mozart's Piano Concerto No.21 in C major, K467 is otherwise better known as the "Theme from Elvira Madigan". Elvira Madigan, a 1967 Swedish film, is based on a true story of two tragic lovers on the run in Sweden. It featured this music throughout the film. Neil Diamond based his 1972 song, Song Sung Blue on  this concerto as well!

The Gymnopedies were published in Paris starting in 1888, as a set of three pieces by French composer and pianist Erik Satie.  These short atmospheric pieces are an important precursor of  contemporary ambient music. The word "gymnopedie" is obscure with various meanings that fit in well with Satie's eccentric behaviour and quirky piano music!

The second piano concerto was composed by Shostakovich in 1957 for his son Maxim's 19th birthday. Maxim premiered the piece during his graduation at the Moscow Conservatory. It is an uncharacteristically cheerful piece, much more so than most of Shostakovich's works. The second movement (andante) is subdued, romantic, tender and with a touch of melancholy.

Ludovico Einaudi (born 1955) is an Italian composer of film soundtracks, music for television and piano, instrumental and orchestral music. 
I Giorni (The Days) was composed after Einaudi heard a 12th century folk song from Mali that describes the killing of a hippopotamus by a hunter and the subsequent mourning of the local village.
I Giorni is the title track of an album released in 2002.
It is one of the most popular contemporary piano compositions.
It was featured in a BBC advert for arts and cultural programmes and has also featured in other adverts. It reached no. 32 in the UK Singles Chart after it was played on BBC Radio 1 in 2011.

‘Casta diva’ is an aria from Vincenzo Bellini’s 1831 opera Norma. It takes place in Act I, shortly after the title character’s first entrance. Bellini originally wrote the role for his friend Giuditta Pasta and the part is considered one of the most challenging roles in the repertory – for a variety of reasons, although particularly the music. It requires a flexible voice that also has tremendous power over a wide range. ‘Casta diva’ is a prime example not only of bel canto (the generic term for a style of music popular in early 19th-century Italy, where high importance is placed on vocal beauty), but also of Bellini’s own distinctive style.
There are a number of classic recordings of this opera including by Dame Joan Sutherland.  
Chopin wrote a piano arrangement of this aria.

Casta Diva

Filmed on location at the sites of two concentration camps in Germany, 'Xenophobic Site' portrays a visually and sonically experimental re-imagining of this dark part of history. Produced on a low or 'no budget' this film was created on digital video and super 8 film and edited on a home PC. Copyright Tina Ulevik Spul Films Australia 2006.
I composed and performed a piano accordion piece as well as performed an excerpt of Satie: Gymnopedie No. 3 on the piano. I also had a small acting cameo role in the film.
The sound was designed by Scott Barnes who mixed my music woith the slowed down sounds of a 78 shellac record and other sounds.
The soundscape evokes alienation, dissonance and the Brechtian Verfremdungseffekt (alienation effect).
