I haven't submitted a track to the Junto in around a year - feels good to be back!

I recorded a tape loop using the Am chord and "wafted" the smells of the loop in and out of the track - trying to keep to the theme of one fragrance. Recorded on a 4 track through a mini korg delay to give that futuristic touch.

I dug up an old mangled tape and brought it back to life, recorded onto 4 track, and used lots of pitch shift, tonnes of reverb and plenty of distortion.

Another tape loop experiment from the Dead: Unearthed release.

Dead: Unearthed Tape Loop Experiment Part 2

As part of my new tape release on Lugubrious Audio of Dead: Unearthed, I have given away pieces of the magnetic 4 track tape used in the recording process. I have invited people to make their own tape loops from these sections of tape. It can be a bit hit and miss so hopefully your section will have lots of sounds on it!

Here is one example I made from a random section of tape. After making the tape loop, I played it on the Tascam portastudio414, then on a cassette walkman and then on the Tascam porta02.  You will hear different effects and speeds of playback.

Donna Summer - I Feel Love (Lo-Fi Tape Deck Remix)

My first stab at the Disquiet Junto. 
Using this painting entitled "Sledging" as inspiration - nothing says minimalist to me more than the landscape of the poles. (Dr Edward Wilson painted it in 1912 during his journey to the South Pole with Capt Scott).  

I used the Bloom HD app created by Brian Eno and Peter Chilvers and just left it running without much input from me. (https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/bloom-hd/id373957864?mt=8)
The iPad was sent through a Digitech Distortion Factory, Digitech Tape Loop delay, Arion Phaser, Cry Baby wah wah and Rocktec Chorus. 

I record 4 separate tracks on an old Tascam 4 track cassette (which itself is very dirty).  
Tk 1 - Bass notes with Bigmuff Pi style distortion 
Tk 2 - just the sounds of the pedals with no input
Tk 3 - some plinky plonk type Eno moments with Ibanez TS-9 distortion
Tk 4 - ambient bass with Boss DS1 distortion 
The dirty imperfections on the tape added to the feel.

I hate shopping so much - Shopping malls are my own personal hell.  So I was quite please to mangle up and destroy those field recordings!  As well as the great quote from the novel Au Bonheur des Dames as inspiration, I recalled the film Dawn of the Dead and its allegory of mindless freaks being drawn to the massive retail space... not quite remembering why they went there in the first place.

I made a tape loop and mixed on a Tascam Portastudio using the following tracks:

The tape loop snapped after I made it so when I put it back together it sounded even more mechanical...(The machines were against me!)

I then chopped up some of the sounds found on the following tracks below on an MPC500.  Distorted some using a DIgitech Distortion factory and Digiloop.  I especially loved the sound of the forklift reversing which I bashed out a simple beat.  This was built around and mimicked  a natural rhythm found in the track Post by Lem Herlihy.

Screw you guys.  I made the Terminator theme tune with pocket operators.

The parts of Nils Frahm's work I love the most are the portions of ambient noise in between the beautiful sparse notes.  I wanted to make the most of the decaying sounds and the creaks and cracks of the piano.  I made a few tape loops and used a delay pedal to loop certain parts and overlapped them.  Recorded on 4 track cassette and stuck together in audacity.

Family Challenge Quest (MoL - D)

Finnish mythology has stories that may originate with the formation of Kaali. 
Louhi, the evil wizard, steals the Sun and fire from people, causing total darkness. 
Ukko, the god of the sky, orders a new Sun to be made from a spark. The virgin of the air starts to make a new Sun, but the spark drops from the sky and hits the ground. This spark goes to an "Aluen" or "Kalevan" lake and causes its water to rise. 
Finnish heroes see the ball of fire falling somewhere "behind the Neva river" (the direction of Estonia from Karelia). 
The heroes head that direction to seek fire, and they finally gather flames from a forest fire.

Kaali

The Aboriginal people refer to the crater as Kandimalal. There are multiple Dreaming stories about the formation of the crater. 
One story, as told by an Elder, is that one day the crescent moon and the evening star passed very close to each other. The evening star became so hot that it fell to the ground, causing an enormous explosion and flash, followed by a dust cloud. 
This frightened the people and a long time passed before they ventured near the crater to see what had happened. When they finally went there, they realised that this was the site where the evening star had fallen to the Earth. 
The Djaru people then named the place "Kandimalal" and it is prominent in art from the region

About 10 years ago, once I realised the plot similarities(!), I decided to read The Odyssey.

For this Junto I rolled Book 8 and Line 72.  Once I read my section about the bard, I tried to make it as tuneful as possible ... but struggled.  Then I remembered the voice of the Odyssey's main computer from the cartoon, Shirka (based on the character Circe).  She had a deep, echoy reverby voice which I've tried to recreate.  As I recorded the voice on cassette I used the background noise and hiss and added some spacey chorus / flanger / filter to make it feel a little retro futuristic.

This is what the story of the Odyssey really means to me!

National Poetry Month: The Holocene [disquiet0067-odysseymachine]

This week's assignment is right up my street!  I draw lots of inspiration for my music from natural sciences, palaeontology, natural disasters and I couldn't let this one go!

I was emailed the portion of map that was actually the one used as the example on the Disquiet page. (http://disquiet.com/2013/05/23/disquiet0073-faultynotation/) I was hoping for something a little more minimal but nevermind! 

I recorded a different guitar loop on cassette for each colour of rock in my segment - around 12 different types of rock. I then set about arranging the sounds as I read from left to right.  For each syncline / anticline I either slowed or sped up the tape to reflect the peaks and troughs in the rock.  For each fault / approximate fault line I dropped a bass note.
I tried to keep the sound as clean as possible to represent the clinical approach needed to cartography whilst at the same time trying to sound rough, gritty and earthy... possibly waiting for the next earthquake!!!
