This is an old children's song possibly written by Eliza Lee Follen. However, it that author can not be confirmed. This song was likely written in the mid 1800's. My grandfather learned a version of this song at a barn dance when he was a child. He and his siblings remembered what they could, and taught their version to my dad, who taught it to my siblings and me.
