The Rescue

the lion’s roar (a broken chain)
and freedom found (by a key
in her hand) she sets him free
to roam—beyond his walls of pain

The Lion roared when he heard the tale,
of how the Wicked Witch did fail,
and Dorothy unlocked his gate,
he stepped into freedom, embracing fate.

& the Winkies, bright with yellow cheer
shake loose their chains (a holiday)
for joy once stolen & locked away
and they dance through fields clear

We’re breakin’ chains, leavin’ fear behind,
together again, with hearts that bind.
For the ones we lost, for the ones we find,
we’ll march to Oz, with hope defined.

(if only our friends were here) they say
with a glance toward the skies,
then calling Winkies to guide the way,
they march where the Tin Man lies

shadows fall as he’s carried home,
(oh, broken, bent in rust) they mend
with hammer’s strike and gentle bend
each patch a mark of battles won

they lift him up and say, we’re whole
again (and tears of joy fall bright)
—she wipes his tears, then, glowing light,
they turn to find the Scarecrow’s soul

a golden axe (it gleams like dawn)
chops through the wood to where he’s tossed
in limbs that bend, a man once lost
to earth, they gather and carry on

in yellow rooms they stay awhile,
the Winkies gift in thanks so deep—
gold collars, bright bands (in secrets keep)
then westward bound (through fields that smile)

Dorothy took the Witch’s Cap,
not knowin’ its power, just feelin’ its wrap.
With treasures in hand, they turned to go,
off to Oz, the yellow bricks show.

through yellow fields they go, a cheer
follows them (each step they take)
bright eyes and hands in fond farewell,
they march toward Oz, and future clear
