My Mum requested that, at her funeral(today, 16 January 2022, being the third anniversary), our sisterJayne and her children made arrangements to cover her coffin in pink roses as a sign to everybody that we should celebrate her life and not mourn her death.  They found a casket with a pink rose design too, which would have pleased her even more.  She wanted to be remembered for the good times she had with her family and many close friends.  Mum enjoyed parties and celebrations a great deal.

In writing the song, I wanted to represent all the important parts of Mum's life to help us to remember what an incredibly generous person she was,  always there to help those who needed some extra love and attention.  We grew up in a house that was somewhere our friends and neighbours could always turn to if they needed help. Throughout our lives it wasn't at all unusual to wake up in the morning to find someone who needed refuge asleep on the sofa.  Neighbours' children would join us for meals on a regular basis and Mum made sure there was always plenty to go round..

At the funeral itself, as the chorus explains, I felt so uncomfortably exposed, standing at the front with all eyes seemingly looking at me, gauging every reaction. I think Jayne and Gal felt much the same if truth be told.  Even with my wife and children there to support me, it was one of those moments in life I don't think any of us ever really wants to face. 

We will certainly never forget our wonderful Mum and all the things she did for us.  She always made special times just a bit more special, going that extra mile so that the memories would last a lifetime.

I felt it was particularly important to write this song for my sister, who was the main carer for my Mum in the latter years of her life and dealt with all the difficulties with so much love, care and strength.  This song is for you Jayne, with all our love. 

As always, we give our heartfelt thanks to Hans for producing an arrangement so in keeping with the spirit of the song and the occasion it marks.

I added a field recording of blackbirds singings because to me, this music is linked to the spring, when everything slowly awakes after a cold winter, bringing to us fresh and positive energies. Lies Are Like Snowflakes

CONTEXT & ENERGY:
This work is a demo (WIP) of a future track which is inspired by the manipura chakra (the inner fire). It is a rather energetic and dancing moment in the Koundal live show with Gwam.
You might have been able to hear a glimpse in the souvenir video of our recent gig at the St Felix de Montceau Abbaye, by Montpellier (France).

THE INSTRUMENTS:
The Rhythm lies on a strong base: a big B sub bass and an electro kick, with a tempo of 100 bpm, sustained with different types of maracas. The World edge is given by the added djembe as an oriental percussion and the didgeridoo which sets a rather hypnotizing and atmospheric background. The main melody is led by an native ameridian flute.

YOUR OPINION IS CRUCIAL

Ceci est une démo de travail (WIP) pour un futur morceau qui puise son inspiration dans le chakra Manipura (le feu intérieur). C'est le moment le plus énergique et dansant de notre spectacle live Koundal & Gwam.

Vous avez pu en entendre un aperçu dans la vidéo souvenir de notre passage à l'Abbaye St Félix de Montceau !

LES INSTRUMENTS :
Le rythme repose sur une base puissante : une grosse Sub Bass en Si (B) et un kick très électro à 100 BPM, soutenus par des maracas. Le côté World est donné par le djembe joué comme une percussion orientale et le didge qui pose une toile de fond hypnotique. La mélodie principale est portée par la flûte amérindienne.

VOTRE AVIS EST CRUCIAL !
* Pensez-vous que l'équilibre entre la grosse Sub Bass et le djembe oriental fonctionne bien ?
* Le tempo de 100 BPM est-il idéal pour cet effet de transe dansante ?

I have always been a huge fan of Vangelis and this was one of the very first tracks i heard from him. I learn so very much about making music and how a simple simple melody can when used creatively be quite epic in nature.

++++. PROFILE NOTES ++++

Once a wannabe, not yet a has been.

It had been over a decade since I put together a song,
and for that matter basically walked away from music altogether.
Losing hope that I would ever have the time to put into music again,
I finally gave away my 3rd music studio.
I ran across SoundCloud around 2013,
and thought I might take what few songs I had recorded, 
and lay them to rest there.
And there they languished.

HOWEVER, around 2017 I went back to SoundCloud
and began listening a little more and a little more,
and actively taking a part in visiting the sites
of so many wonderful musicians and beautiful songs.
Also, more and more often I would discover that these artists
were blossoming everywhere around the world,
and most definitely worthy of high praise and compliments.

Then suddenly, these old dead soundtracks right here
began to have a bit of life breathed back into them.
From the kind words that began to come trickling in,
I thought, maybe, someday I might give this music thing a try again.

The thing that finally pushed me into action
was a particular SoundCloud artist…Sander Heerings,

Not only was he encouraging,
but he began faithfully responding to a few questions,
then a barrage of them.

The final result seemed to be that after a couple of months,
the Old Grinder now has a 4th studio and, finally, a new song.
I hope there may be many more to come.

Thank you Sander, and to the multitude that have dropped in
to listen to these old songs, 
and most of all, for perking up my spirits.

In music there is no right or wrong...just the feelings you experience while being a part of it in any way.
