The QRZ1 is based on Erkki Kurenniemi's sound material tapes that he made with a DIMI-A synthesizer (1970). The work was composed in Rotterdam and performed at WORM in January 25, 2014, during the International Film Festival Rotterdam. Thanks to Mikko Ojanen for the sounds and Project QRZ invitation.

Petri Kuljuntausta - QRZ1 (Variations On The Sounds Of DIMI-A)

The sound work is based on underwater recordings made at Baltic Sea and near Rauma. The recordings at Baltic Sea were made in collaboration with Finnish Enviroment Institute SYKE and Bias research project. Additional recordings were made in the canal of Rauma. 

Sounds and Recording Places

Rauma Canal: flowing water, wind recorded underwater, fishes, branches and trashes flowing in canal, silence of canal, talking from the bridge, walkers, cyclists and cars passing over the bridges, unknown noises.

Baltic Sea: passing ferries and boats, sounds of fishes, sounds of propellers and engines, sounds of sea and its silence, electronic signals, unknown noises.

The Great White Bird (2012)

The work was commissoned by Helicotrema Festival, Italy. The following text is from the interview made for the festival:

Question: For Helicotrema, you will present a new work, The Great White Bird. Can you talk about the genesis of the piece, as well as its title?

Petri Kuljuntausta: - "I started the composition work by arranging a recording trip to West Coast of Finland on 18-19th of May, 2012. The recording place was a tower build for birdwatchers at the conservation area by the sea (60°63'N, 21°85'E). There were many birds singing in the area, but when I was watching and listening this mythic and gallant bird, I made the decision that the swan will be the sound subject for my composition.
   During the recording there were dozens of swans in the Bay. The swans were singing, making sound signals, splashing water with their strong wings and fighting with the competitors. I have never seen so many swans, so the place and timing was perfect for my recording. After the trip I listened and tested the recorded material at my studio, selected the sound segments that I wanted to use and started the composition work."

Question: Can you talk about the genesis of the new work you will present during Helicotrema?

Petri Kuljuntausta: "Blast-off (2013) is a kind of abstract travel diary. It is based on the airport recordings that I have recorded at my travels. Occasionally the environmental sounds are recognizable in this work, but usually the sound material is so transformed and alienated that it is not possible to hear the origin of the sound source. I have manipulated the recordings with a granular synthesis softwares. To me it is important that I use environmental sources in my work, as these give me that kind of sonic textures that I am interested in."

Petri Kuljuntausta with Erkki Soininen: Lecture on Site-Specific Art (2012)

Lecture on Site-Specific Art was recorded live at Urban Unknown City performance (at the Performance Compost festival) in October 13, 2012, at Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art, Helsinki. Erkki Soininen read an article by Mary Jane Jacob. Petri Kuljuntausta did the composition, environmental recordings and sound processing. The performance was an homage to composer and philosopher John Cage, whose 100th birthday was on September 5th, 2012. This short version was realized for the 100 x John project, organized by Electronic Music Foundation, New York.

Traces of Sound

The work is based on three sound elements: airport recordings, sea sounds, and electronically composed parts. 

I made the ambience recordings at the airports of London, Paris, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Morelia. The sea is Pacific Sea, which I recorded at Venice Beach, Los Angeles. Electronic parts are generated from these environmental recordings by cutting the sounds into tiny pieces and manipulating them with granular synthesis software. 

The work was broadcasted first time on November 2nd, 2012, and repeat broadcast was on November 4th, on YLE Radio 1, Finnish Broadcasting Company.

Heavy Feather (2008)

In 2009 Swedish label Elektron released a CD compilation entitled North South (EM 1013). The composers from Nordic countries and South-America exchanged local sounds and composed a new work for the album. One of the compositions is Heavy Feather. Elektron is the record company of SEAMS, the Society of Electro-Acoustic Music in Sweden.
