MNMT 301 : Simone Bauer

London's @lorainejames is as experimental as electronic artists get. She doesn't just make hard to categorise music, she makes music for which there are often no words. Depending on your mood, her sounds can suit either full-on dance floor workouts or reflective home listens. That has been the case across two standout albums on Hyperdub, both of which explore vulnerability and identity across tracks that fizz with ideas and energy.  The most recent, Reflection back in June, came with snippets of interior monologue. They lay bare James's most intimate feelings while the beats around her continue to act as something of a safety blanket. 

This week's rule-breaking mix features a number of Loraine's tunes including the unnamed and exclusive opener, plus a flurry of beats from peers like FaltyDL, object blue, Squarepusher and Djrum. They make for a full body workout that twitches your every synapse one minute then sink you into a deeply seductive club sound the next. The transitions from hyper-polished and futuristic rhythms to live jazz drums, or icy dub to glitchy IDM, would seem impossible on paper, but in practice, they are executed perfectly.

House of Kenzo is a multidisciplinary art collective affiliated to Rabit’s Halcyon Veil label. Initially interested in vogue dance, they’ve move on to explore performance art and music, becoming a forceful DIY community radically transforming the Texas cultural landscape. They’re coming to Unsound with the premiere of their new multimedia work Magna Surgat, presented with Rabit and visual artist Sam Rolfes, who will transfer their movement into a 3d rendered virtual world. House of Kenzo's LEDEF will also play a b2b set with Rabit at the closing party. Listen to her radically explosive sound that collides genres, textures and rhythms disregarding any conventions!

We Are At Home #43 by Red Robin – Let’s go viral

Ich werde oft gefragt, wieso ich eigentlich keine Einzel-Tracks höre. Naja hat damit zu tun das ich kein DJ bin … aber vor allem daran das für mich der DJ der Künstler ist … da er es schafft aus den ganz Tracks einen Teppich mit einem roten Faden zu weben. Und weil wir gerade bei Rot sind … ist einer dieser ganz besonderen verrückten Künstler für mich Red Robin, der das mit dem roten Faden besonders ausgeprägt beherrscht.

Eigentlich sollte dieser Mix der letzte in der „We Are At Home“ Reihe werden … da der große Lock-Down ja vorbei war. Aber Robin hat sich für den Mix bisschen mehr Zeit gebeten … so 4 Monate extra haha. Und nun sind wir im zweiten Lock-Down und somit wird er der erste von der zweiten Welle.

Robin hat eine komplett andere Rangehens weise, was das produzieren von Podcast angeht. Er hat viele verschiedene Soundstränge die in sich ein stimmiges Bild ergeben und anschließend versucht er diese zusammenzubringen und zu verweben. Die Frage ist dann aber halt immer welche passen rein, welche fliegen wieder raus, wie wird am Schluss die Geschichte erzählt. Außerdem werden alle Sounds nochmal soundtechnisch angepasst und aufeinander abgestimmt bis runter zu jeder einzelnen Hi-Hat … völlig crazy.

Robin was soll ich sagen … ich bin überwältigt wieviel Arbeit und Leidenschaft du in diesen Mix gepackt hast und das Ergebnis ist aber auch jede Minute wert gewesen. Ich bin super super Happy dich in dieser Reihe mit diesem einzigartigen Mix zu wissen. Von Musik-Freak zu Musik-Freak … DANKE 🙏
