Pev swiftly follows up the Pulse EP with another four tracks of sprightly club gear that continue to shape out his current areas of exploration in the studio. As ever, there are no fixed concepts or approaches - just an instinct for energising, inventive tracks taking in a range of tempos and rhythms.  

The first half of Pulse Modulation EP is marked out by linear rhythms which showcase the most techno aspects of Pev’s sound. ‘Pulse V’ is charged with the kind of alien synth lines which could only come from his studio, but also draw a line to the hi-tech soul of foundational Detroit techno. ‘Pulse VI’ has a starker, bleep-led sound pitched towards tougher dancefloors. 

’Pulse VII’ strips things back in comparison, leaning in on a blanket of bass and keeping the drums sparse and to the point - a study in soundsystem pressure.  Widening the spectrum of the record, ‘Pulse VIII’ sees Pev make a rare push up into 160+ territory - something normally reserved for his DJ sets. Swerving obvious break edits, his take on jungle is lean and crisp, delivering a fresh slant on the sound while maintaining the sharp focus of his current output.

Matching his signature melodic futurism with enduring club music structures, Pev brings the Pulse series to a natural conclusion with the Pulse Phase EP. On this third release he underlines the broader approach to tempos and styles he’s taken across this latest period of his output, soon to be coalesced into a new live set. 

If there’s been a nostalgic streak detectable amongst the crisp modernism of the Pulse series, it comes through clearer than ever in the looped-up house jack and starry-eyed techno synth hooks of ‘Pulse IX’. ‘Pulse TEN’ pares back for a lean soundsystem workout driven by a strafing arp and fractured drums while ‘Pulse XI’ revisits 90s bleep techno with a deep, dubby intention. ‘Pulse XII’ completes the picture capturing the skeletal pressure of 2-step at its most slender and deadly.

There’s never a sense of over-familiarity — the exacting angles of the drums and alien hue of the synths maintain Pev’s distinctive sound first and foremost. But this series has also been an opportunity to hear some of his musical DNA more explicitly than before, cast in universal rave motifs propelled by the unrelenting pursuit of new forms for the dance.

For what will conclude our year and usher in a new one of astrological forecasts and convincing new year resolutions, we have our January guest and Acido Records boss man, Dynamo Dreesen doing what he does both in equal measure, naturally and supremely.

Now in operation for over a decade, Acido has become somewhat of an unmonitored breeding ground for unconstrained, left of centre rhythms, often laced abruptly in psychedelia though always heavily drenched in peculiarities. Whether it’s meditative soundscapes, experiments in hip-hop or high-paced playful oddities, Dynamo and his equally talented group of friends have occupied Acido’s space almost exclusively over the last ten years, with the latter five being presided over by the safe and guiding hands of Dre(e)svn, the alias given to that of the dynamic partnership between Dynamo and Sued don, SVN.

These Acido reverberations are most alluring particularly in their reticent nature, allowing the listener to discover much upon recurrent listens. Having released a staggering (by Acido standards) four EPs in 2014, the timing appears perfect for this venerated figure to get festive and make his way all the way south to display his skills in both the party, and, the party. Expect an evening of no holds barred swinging antics. Check this insight in advance.

2015’s first release on the reverse Livity Sound label (dnuoS ytiviL) comes courtesy of Paris based artist Simo Cell. 
dnuoS ytiviL has navigated the undercurrents of the UK style melting pot for the last three years with the aim of releasing tracks that complement the output of its sister label. 
2014 set the bar high with releases from Hodge (Amor Fati / Renegades) and Bruce (Just Getting Started / Tilikum) which were ubiquitous across dance floors over the year. This new 12” keeps up the pace, seeing the debut release of Simo Cell, who’s fuzzy percussive grooves and stealthily paced bare bones rhythms perfectly complement the label aesthetic whilst defining an identity and vision of his own.

Here is the first studio DJ mix i ever did in 1992. It a selection Rave, Hardcore and some very early Jungle music. It came out on cassette tape as part of a small series released on the Circus Warp label. Circus Warp was a collective of traveler's infamous for throwing (the now) legendary free party's in and around the south west of England in the early 1990's. I was a young 19 year old DJ looking for anywhere i could be heard and these are the rave's were where i got to cut my teeth and play to a diverse and highly open minded crowd. Massive respect to the Circus Warp, all the other free party crews and anyone who reached any of the free raves.
