We asked Robert to create a mix that explores some of his favourite film scores The results include a spectrum of classics and obscure or forgotten gems, spanning experimental, contemporary classical, electronic music and beyond.
Robert says: 'With this mix I wanted to focus on several all time favourites of mine in terms of film music and all over film sound. Also I wanted to give the listener a window into my own process for scoring film. The way in which each of these examples navigates the cinematic space, they address a myriad of moods and genres. Whether tense, ecstatic, melancholy, reverent, absurd, contemplative or whimsical, each selection provides an intention and a pathway into the landscape of the world it finds itself tethered to. It is this connectedness that makes for an overall complete work and cements the idea. I hope you enjoy.'

Arc & Texture fuses the talents of Toronto's Vanese Smith (Pursuit Grooves) and Caleb Klager. Their debut at MUTEK will showcase unorthodox cinematic percussive sounds and emotive modular synthesis tones, creating techno that is as thought-provoking as it is visceral. This bass-driven performance marks their beginning of their collaboration.

A raver first, Afrooz is a DJ and mixed media artist based in Vancouver, BC.

Born in Vancouver and raised between there and Tehran, she found her home in her teens—on the dance floor at a rave. Growing up in a musical family surrounded by traditional Persian instruments, she was dancing before walking, and curating music before DJing. Her early exposure to tonbak, santoor, tar, and setar formed her deep appreciation for a wide range of sounds and rhythmic patterns. Beyond the dance floor, her influences range from Jalil Shahnaz to Wu-Tang Clan. It’s less about genre, and more about an emphasis on rhythm and storytelling.

Her musical journey led her to Toronto, where she launched her event series, Maar Peech (meaning spiral in Persian). The goal was to create a warm environment for other rhythm enthusiasts to spiral upwards (instead of downwards) during Toronto’s long and dark winter months.

The idea is to keep sharing music that reaches deep into the psyche, and swings it into a playful, percussive, upward spiral.


Mix description: In honour of Black History Month, this set is a homage to the roots of electronic music, with every track produced by (or remixed by) some of my favourite Black artists. You can expect a blend of acid, hypnotic techno, breakbeat, left-field swing, and lots of intricate drum patterns. The mix is framed by the voices of two icons of resistance and revolution—opening with Nina Simone and closing with Angela Davis—I used these as a reminder that dance music has always been political and was created as a form of resistance to oppression.

During that time Pursuit Grooves was building her graphic/product design alias (Mo:delic Arts), and now she's back with a heavy hitting funky yet industrial take on instrumental electronic music that is complex and dynamic in theme. Felt Armour is about finding balance in life. The battle between being strong and being allowed to feel. Appearing to have a tough exterior that is actually soft and even fragile. Not being afraid to have grand ambitions, knowing that there will be obstacles along the way. Learning to embrace the journey and the process, even if it's a battlefield. And ultimately not giving up in the face of adversity.
