Shabari, and old ascetic woman, has waited for Rama to bless her hermitage for a long, long time. She daily spreads flowers along the walkway to soften the footpath for His lotus feet. When at last He appears, she is overjoyed. She offers Rama and Lakshmana sitting places, water, and sweet berries, and in turn, Rama offers her liberation from the material world. In this age which is called "Kali-yuga," the most highly recommended method of attaining self-realization is the practice of chanting God's names. This is also called mantra-meditation, and is an important feature of bhakti-yoga, or connecting with God in devotion. In many scriptures, bhakti-yoga is mentioned, and in Kali-yuga it is specifically mentioned that the chanting of the maha-mantra Hare Krsna Hare Krsna Krsna Krsna Hare Hare Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare is the most appropriate and powerful means for connecting with God in devotion. In this song, the holy names of Sita and Rama are chanted. Just as in the Hare Krsna maha-mantra, Sita and Rama are also names of God (Rama) and His feminine energy (Sita). The names of God can be chanted in Kali-yuga or in any age, for the purification of the heart.
