Line Noise is taking part in the 30th anniversary celebrations of Barcelona's famed club, Nitsa, including interviews with some of the key players in Nitsa's history.  In episode 3, we talk to Erol Alkan, who played his first DJ gig outside the UK at Nitsa and who has returned to the club ever year since. He is also the favourite DJ of Nitsa resident DJ Coco. Erol shared his memories of Nitsa and of club music from 2000 to 2002. You can also consider this part 2 of our recent interview with Erol.

Contrary to the misinformed UK rap didn’t start with Dizzy Rascal, The Streets & Stormzy

Neither was it always an inferior emulation of its US counterparts. The UK took musical influences from diverse sources inspired by the countries uniquely diverse spectrum of international cultures, embryonic influential moments that transformed into multiple worldwide musical phenomenons, hugely successful genres that could only of been forged in the UK. 

The evolution of rap in the UK is a complex and fascinating story, many of its first commercial releases might of been novelties or pop hit records but a parallel strong & passionate underground scene developed via events, clubs, magazines and nationwide specialist Rap radio shows, Hip Hop in the UK was a transformative colour blind unifying force. 

Although  much of it was ignored outside of the UK, Early British rap from across all regions of the country created many landmark timeless anthems that still sound as fresh and urgent today as they did when first released, equally as relevant as seminal revered releases from the same era across the pond, they deserve more respect and attention. 

I’ve tried to include as many of my favourite tracks from 1980-1996 as possible in this mix. In chronological order, but by no means definitive, I’m fully aware I’ve missed out loads of other great records, (and added some curveballs simply to infuriate purists) so my apologises to those legends & pioneers I didn’t feature. 

Also I’m certainly no turntablist so please don’t expect cutting, scratching or masterfully theatric blends, I’ll leave that to the experts. 

Apologies for playing Ian Dury during tracks from 1981, it was originally released in 1979 so really should have started the mix.

They mixed it up on Phantasy Sound with textural delight, The earworming anchor bobbed and bounced all through the night, From FWD-era gumption to the disco esoteric, They created ‘Lucid’ madness, quite atmospheric!

The festival-rupturing Highdive had ruptured long before, Now ‘Feel So’ tipped the scales toward the ecstatic dance floor, With post-punk percussion prancing, hi-NRG in tow, From Chicago down to Rimini, watch the bassline grow!

Said Peggy Gou and Daniel Avery, “What a splendid sound!” While 2ManyDJs spun it ’round and ’round and ’round, And Moschino’s models strutted to the supreme release, As rave outsiders intersected in their bubbling masterpiece!

Boys Noize & Erol Alkan ‘Avalanche (Terminal Velocity)’ features vocals by Jarvis Cocker, out now on Phantasy

Once again, Erol Alkan and Boys Noize have teamed up, for what has become a stunning re-imagining of last years smash single ‘Avalanche’.. Determined to avoid a taking an obvious route, the pair originally intended to commission a spoken word interpretation- the natural choice was the mellifluous Jarvis Cocker.

Throwing his creative muscle behind the project, it was Jarvis’s inspired choice for him to recite the seminal lyrics of Leonard Cohen’s song of the same name… A handwritten letter and CDR were dispatched to Mr Cohen, who very quickly gave his full and delighted support to the project.

All that was left was for Jarvis to add his distinctive twist to the title, in the form of ‘Avalanche (Terminal Velocity)’ despite this unlikely paring of minds the finished work sees the sonorous tones of Mr Cocker riding the megalithic slabs of fizzing synthesis and piston-ing drums with aplomb to mesmeric effect.

On the remix tip the duo enlist the true underground maestro himself Ewan Pearson, who supplies not one, but two different flavours of rerub – the ‘Hall Of The Mountain King Remix’ mix takes the original on a warped acid redux via Chicago, while the ‘Deeper Underground Re-Version’ reroutes proceedings to dubbed out Berlin basement after hours to stunning effect. Not to be out done, hot new talent Canblaster interprets the original as a low-slung bleeptastic old-school electro workout, recalling the early works of Warp, that rounds the package off in glorious style.
