Wrapping up April is Random Jams co-organiser, Mother Tongues host on Refuge Worldwide, selector, kimchi & noodle maker extraordinaire michi_dt

michi exudes a calming energy that draws you to him. I think the best way to describe him is by talking about the time we played together. We were invited by the Smoothin groovin fam for their 1st party of '25, & having been a fan what he plays on radio I was so looking forward to sharing the decks. We didn't chat much about what we'd play, just a quick "would you like to start or want me to start", to which he stated that he had a interlude to open & reset the room, something I was instantly into, as I also had an interlude for the same purpose. I knew then that this would be special & the vibes meshed effortlessly.

I LOVE moments like that, the joy of djing is sharing music that expresses you. To have a genuine conv occur without any words is magic. I immediately made a mental note to ask michi to contribute a mix to the series, because I wanted to hear him playing a longer set where he can take the time to explore his collection. & wow he did so in the most magnificent of ways.

What you're about to hear is a postcard. Drawing from multiple genres, soundscapes & movies, michi builds a rich tapestry that is more a portal to his world. This is what VIBRATIO)))NS & DJing is meant to be: an invite to selector's sonic living room while they tell you who they are through their records.

Here's the mix in his own words:

"Mixes hold a dear place in my heart, as they’re how I started out DJing 4 years ago. After a year of COVID lockdown, I found myself consuming so much media (films, books, videos, internet), but what I was really missing was the act of creating something. So I downloaded a cracked copy of Ableton Live and started putting together mixes based on random imaginary scenarios that I was daydreaming about. And this is basically what I did for an entire year: forgetting breakfast and lunch and instead sitting at my laptop warping tracks to beatmatch them, and obsessing over EQ and volume automations for “perfect” blends and transitions. It was a very solitary exercise, but I really loved it. After being taught how to use CDJs and mixers, I started doing live gigs and radio, where I found myself preferring to improvise, and I never really touched Ableton Live again.

When Moe asked me to contribute to his series, it was the tail end of winter and I had just returned from a long trip to Asia. I was in a bit of a withdrawn funk, watching a lot of movies and going for morning walks with my newly purchased thermos mug (unapologetically shilling here). I knew I wanted to use the opportunity to be selfish and to make a mix just for myself – to capture these solitary moments, but also to look forward in anticipation of spring. I won’t say much more about the mix itself, except that it was a lovely exercise in daydreaming, and making it took me back to the magic of those early days when I was just starting out."
