We are excited to share an enticing ambient remix by Australian musician and producer, Mikey Young, of Music Yared, master musicians of Ethiopiean and Eritrean traditional folk music.

Taken from a forthcoming remix EP on Music in Exile, featuring three reworkings of “Sindayo” by Melbourne, Australia based Music Yared by Melbourn’s Mikey Young (of Total Control, Eddy Current Suppression Ring & The Green Child). The original “Sindayo” is found on their self-titled debut, released last year on Music in Exile. Of the three remixes, Mikey’s Krar Remix was our favourite, due to the sublime sounds he created, reworking the original instrumentation into a soft bed of synthetic sounds. A deeply soothing listen.  

Anbessa Gebrehiwot and Haftu Reda are masterful players of krar and masinko, traditional string instruments from Eritrea and Ethiopia. Now based in Melbourne, Australia, the pair collaborate with multi-instrumentalist Dale Gorfinkel to create an innovative ensemble sound that celebrates their East African culture. The band's seemingly endless repertoire ranges from modern takes on folk songs to new, original compositions with Anbessa’s strong vocal presence a perfect match to Haftu’s sweet lyrical modesty.

Music Yared’s compositions are inspired by traditional Ethiopian and Eritrean folk songs and they sing about love, distance, separation and culture. Their songs also feature virtuosic mastery of traditional instruments - the krar, (a 5 string lyre style instrument), and the masinko (a single string violin-like instrument that is played using a bow.) Although inspired by tradition, Music Yared’s compositions embrace the notion that music is always developing and changing with the times. Taking influence from traditional folk songs, Music Yared finds newness and originality through their personal approach to their lyrics, their treatment of rhythm, and the creation of new beats. This change and openness to new sounds is also apparent in their instrumentation, as they pair their traditional instruments with drums, as well as samples of bass lines and percussion. 

Mikey Young’s legacy is well known throughout the Australian music scene, most notably as part of garage punk band Eddy Current Suppression Ring, and synth-driven outfit, Total Control. However, the talents of Young extend well beyond the performance setting to the world of engineering and mastering with his name appearing in the liner notes of an incredible number of releases, becoming something of a trademark of quality. In this release, Young showcases his skill and nuance, creating a remix where tradition and sonic exploration co-exist.  

Given their openness to new musical approaches and experimentation, it only seems fitting for the songs of Music Yared to be remixed, allowing further exploration of their inherent musical attitudes towards change and development. The remixes by Mikey Young traverse new sonic territory, pairing the traditional character of Music Yared with contrasting ideas from different sonic landscapes. Including musical acknowledgements to the original song, Young’s remixes bring these tracks into new sonic worlds; synth pads and melodies swell and intertwine, samples interject, whilst grooving electronic beats underpin a new approach to texture and song structure.

Side A belongs to “Olympus Mons”, a song as big as the mountain its named from. Snake charmer synth lines and vocal roars backed by the baddest rhythm section in a while… wait for the solo! The B side holds “Work It Out”, with broken 4-off-the-floor drumz and revving echo effects. Taking the coveted B1 spot is the always dancefloor smashing “Second Cycle” - A verified banger that opens up with ground shaking acidish filter bubbles, and closes somewhere way up above the clouds.

To launch their new record label, the guys at Bouquet. launch with a V/A compiling compelling and unusual tracks from both new and established artists, some that we know but all that we'll love. True to their namesake, Boquet offers up different shapes and shades and colours of music that went together pleasingly and cohesively. For this, they turned to a good friend and sonic florist, Caffeine Worldwide, who curated the compilation - a bit like Moonpig do for your marge on Mothers Day.

To create this stunning, aromatic bunch, they scoured Soundcloud for new artists, harassed friends and reached out to everyone they knew. Eight months and a thousand Facebook messages later, it’s finally ready for all to rinse. We're lucky to host @BlairSoundDesign's, Fern Cube - which is one of the most colourful varieties of the arrangement, bringing fun party vibes, right to your lug holes.

Raikes Parade - Take A Nibble (STW Premiere)

We’re putting out the first Mister Saturday Night Records release in a long while. It’s by Russell E.L. Butler, and it’s called “Blah Blah”. The record comes out on Friday, September 4, and it contains three tracks made in Prague at the Synthesizer Library and one track made in Russell’s pre-New York home in Oakland.

On the EP’s release date Sept 4th, which is Bandcamp Day, all of the Mister Saturday Night Records share of Bandcamp proceeds from the release will go to Princess Janae Place, an organization that provides referrals to housing for chronically homeless LGBTQ adults in the New York Tri-state area, with direct emphasis on Trans/GNC people of color.

The vinyl release, designed by Boot Boyz Biz, includes a poster featuring these words from Russell:

What are my dreams when they are spoken into real space? Are they statements centering my desires? Are they indictments to hold myself accountable to my vision of life?

My consciousness is meandering and at times I celebrate this drone of words. Stripped of meaning, to reveal what’s beneath. Not an answer, but further questions. The purpose of the mantra is to quiet the conscious mind until the spirit takes over.

Place is important. It grounds the abstract in our humanity. These things came from somewhere. Many places. To culminate into one. Connecting them all. And creating something entirely new. Not an answer, but more questions.

A wigged out cut for the club and beyond, the psychedelic, post-punk tinged sounds of 'Black Dragon Loop' sees the duo deep dive further into their infinite sonic palette with a darker and more rugged multi-instrumental approach. Made out of the sample banks of a good friend, the track indicates a key factor in FYI Chris' music - their sense of community, the one which they are so wholly ingrained, and the influence of friends and family along the way. Sonically a reflection of the times but also a clear indication of a penchant for industrial and macabre sounds, this new single represents a sound fans will already know, largely due to West Friends label they co-run with friends from the Rye Wax basement - the imprint has delivered some of London's most outlandish dance-music in recent years, exemplifying their love for tongue-in-cheek gallows humour and an appetite for wonky club weirdness.
