In the letter of 1 Peter, he writes to a group of Christians displaced by the Roman Empire, and encourages them in their time of suffering and persecution by reminding them that through suffering they are feeling what Jesus felt and that suffering is like fire that refines faith. This song is a letter written in response back to Peter from a 21st Century American perspective of not understanding what it actually feels like to suffer for believing something and trying to grasp the gravity of true religious persecution and whether or not I would be able to stand in the face of life-threatening odds for my faith if I can't even stand against my own inner demons at times.
