Akanbi is heading a new generation of dedicated underground ravers in NYC. Raised in Lagos, Nigeria, with limited access to internet but a huge thirst for new music, Akanbi moved to NY in 2010 and immersed himself head on into every corner of dance music, as a serious dancer and eventually a DJ. He cultivated his own style that delivers whipcrack bangers, insistent percussion, pounding breaks & slow-burning experimental descents. In 2016 he started New York’s GROOVY GROOVY parties, a judgment-free atmosphere for wild dance floors, radical politics, and a much-needed dose of fresh young talent. Akanbi has quickly made an impression with incendiary sets at New York’s Mutual Dreaming & Fourth World, and internationally at Tresor & ://about blank in Berlin. In 2017, he was featured on the Fader mix series, and has been highlighted by Resident Advisor as a key performance at the New York DIY festival, Sustain-Release.

I had heard amazing things about Lyra's music and performance from my trusted friend BLEID who played on the same festival as her a couple years back - i memorized the name and was so happy to find that we would both attend the SHAPE platform gathering in Prague, where many artists from everywhere, including Peach, Oceanic, avsluta, patten and many more got together to attend workshops and lectures. Meeting Lyra was great, i was instantly struck by her humanity, a way of communicating that was so calm and kind and also her pondered reflections on all these different subjects. aside from a participant as a selected SHAPE artist, she was also a lecturer and the three-day event, and experiencing her talk about childhood in rural america, her myriad music influences and her inventive approach to manipulating sounds and particularly her voice left me in awe. her new album fountain really translates all these beautiful impressions i got, with her voice and carved sonics in juxtapositions all working together to create pieces where the percussion might be a vocal, for example, and so on - where a sense of fluidity and lack of fixed rules is key (my fav feeling if you know me).
i think of out time together in Prague often and how her intent and studious, graceful spirit in music inspired me, so i wanted to somehow make a link with what we do at naive, and asked her if she was willing to explore her practice in the mix format for us, which she did accept to my great happiness - and the result is so completting and exciting! collages of speech and music, new fiona (yess), ariana's into you remixed, and plenty of exploratory synth and drum work. i can feel the care that was put into this, and i feel so honoured to have lyra on the naivetape series. dive into this ever-changing tunnel of colourful explosion and thank her later <3
ps - lyra is a twin and the incredible baby pic is with her twin. about it she said something so cute and meaningful i couldn't not quote:  i really like the first one with one of us with the hand in the others mouth because it expresses a strange and cute intimacy of two souls who grew in the same womb together

"Anyone that's ever worked a "night shift" (bars, hospitals, taxis, etc.) knows that there's a strange time of night, usually around 4:30-5:30 am, when the most subtle sounds of the world seem extra dramatic. The example I like to use is the sound of a lighter dropping at a gas station. Or the sound of wind through palm trees. The kind of sound that you don't get the chance to hear when the rest of the world is aroused, but in the context of more ambient, experimental, cinematic, and dark music, is inspiring and suggestive. It's the music of film noir, Miles Davis, and Edward Hopper paintings, but also Boards of Canada, Sunn 0))), Molly Drake, Charles Manson, These Hidden Hands, whatever. Night shift always takes on the flavor of the guest's preference but is built around that time of night, and the music that makes you think of it."

Welcome back to our new mix and feature program. CSS072 features Detroit, Pure Rave. Pure Rave, a collective based in Detroit, Michigan, is an ongoing experiment in "chance dance". Using various prepared turntables, "damaged" records, the occasional drum machine, the effect is an indeterminate arrangement of patterns and rhythmic sonic collage. Real-time experimentation with the goal of hitting your pleasure center for whatever your brain thinks is interesting. This 90 minute mix is composed by using various records on two prepared turntables and one cdj to create asynchronous loops and mixing those down together to make the "tracks" you hear on the mix.
