POOLS, the moniker of Los Angeles duo Thee Mike Bee and DJ Morsecode, craft a sound that conjures up the easy going swagger and soulful grit of the left-most coast. The first two sides of original versions read like an album, perfect for a lazy Sunday rooftop BBQ with beers, bros and blunts, (although no doubt some of these gems will find their way into DJs' warm-up and boom-bap sets). Sides C & D elevate the juncture to dance floor level, with smooth and varied remixes from RNT stalwarts Luvless and DJ Vas, plus label newcomers thatmanmonkz and Junktion.

Whether it’s the intergalactic disco of Prins Thomas and Lindstrøm or the otherworldly electronica of Röyksopp, it’s clear the long nights and wide-open starry skies have been a huge inspiration for many. The latest in this distinguished line of sonic-cosmonauts are Norwegian duo https://soundcloud.com/atella whose new single, ‘Anyone Out There?’ feat. fellow Norwegian Cal on vocals, is a wonderful slice of optimistic Cosmo-Pop backed by the further out-there instrumental ‘In The Days of the Green’.

Whilst the pair grew up almost 1500 km apart, Magnus north of the Arctic Circle and Johannes in the south of the country, they shared a passion for both music and outer space. Now both based in Bergen, the cultural capital of Norway, the duo have married those twin obsessions to craft a number of critically acclaimed singles for Belgium’s Eskimo Recordings. For ‘Anyone Out There?’ the duo have teamed up with 'Cal', the alias of singer and songwriter Frida Amundsen who at just 24 already has two studio albums, several hit singles and years of song writing experience under her belt and whose stunning vocals lift the track into high-orbit.

“It’s easy to end up feeling lost in this world, even though it should feel like home,” explain Atella. “Seeing a shining future from afar doesn’t mean that this is what we are dreaming of. As we are closing in, things might get clearer. If we then suddenly realize we chose a wrong path, should we turn back and go to start, or should we keep on going, in a new direction? «Anyone Out There?» Picks up signals from the past and shoots them into the future. While wondering what can be out there, the most peculiar things are happening just outside our own planet. What might look like a colourful sensation in the sky might just, if you look close enough, be a rocky traveller passing us by.”

London bass-smith Rob Burn, after February's single tease, delivers his full Infinite Machine wax debut, under the moniker iO Sounds.

The A-side features "AFDW", a UKG house interplay of dancefloor-rousing vocal stutters and goosebumps-inducing R'n'B melismas, and "Tough Luck", which we've previously described as " a tour-de-force of everything of superlative appeal in electronic music nowadays", and which has not disappointed upon thorough club testing.

The B-side rocks "Bag of Snakes", which builds upon the style of the A-side tracks, while sneaking in more pervasive tech-house elements and a serpentine (wink-wink) progression, and "Always Something", a soulful next-gen deep-house number, featuring one of the most memorable hooks in IM's catalogue.

We also proudly offer not one or two, but four digital bonus tracks, in the form of the remix gallery (not including Cloaka's earlier single-only offering). Deft takes "Bag of Snakes" into mechanistic dub techno territory, drenching the original in plenty of atmosphere, while latching it to an impeccable slow-burning 4/4 beat, with a spoken word sample as centerpience... spoken word our listeners are encouraged to heed. Herr Johann gives "AFDW" an emotional, expressive, score-like leftfield treatment. Sibian & Faun increase the BPM on "Always Something", and characteristically bolster the sound design quota, blending urgency and ambience into an alternately gliding and pummeling future bass workout. Blakmsmif's 'Forge Melded' remix of "Tough Luck" is an exuberant closer, showering us with ear candy via its metallic percussion, and coaxing the original's vocals into full-on euphoria via its bed of trance stabs.

Lifted from their 2019-released album ‘Pleasure Centre’, Kraak & Smaak’s single ’Same Blood’ featuring Los Angeles-based duo The Palms is making a timely comeback in this second half of summer, enhanced by a quartet of surefire reworks courtesy of Norwegian nu-disco don Prins Thomas and True Romance head honcho, Tensnake.

A lavishly orchestrated indie disco-pop number, ‘Same Blood’ casts a spell of Californian summer upon the dancefloor with its coastal sunset-ish atmosphere, understated psychedelia and welcoming zero-G dreaminess that’s become a trademark of The Palms’ wistful musical imaginarium.

Adding his club-optimised twist to the tune, Hamburg-based house escapist Tensnake unbridles the groove and tunes up the engines to develop the original mix's DJ-friendly potential to the full. Calibrated to grab the dancers and not let loose on them till the lights have gone off, both the short edit and extended version talk the most sensual body language and are primed to excel in transient moments, whether the sun is going up or down.

Lulling us to a brightly hued utopia of hybrid disco-rock and faded early-days house, Nordic wizard Prins Thomas’ further lushly ornamented takes embark us on a trip down memory lane, with its funky slap bass, chromatic pads and soft bugle calls holding the rank of time-travelling vehicle. A total treat for the feet and senses, the classic ‘diskomiks’ treatment doesn’t disappoint, be it the vocal version which gracefully incorporates The Palms’ enticing singing into a further spacious, kosmische-tinged environment, or the instrumental one, which allows Prins Thomas’ widescreen production process to be fully underlined and the listener to lose himself in between tight-knit beds of complex melodic lines. Sail off to another dimension.
