Pearl DRX-1 Study#1

A free improvisation on the infamous 808 along with the DRX-1 and friends. That would sound like this. BOOM, BOOM, BOOM—the 808's 80s heartbeat echoes, thunderous and deep. CLINK, CLANK, WHIRRR—the resampling splits and cuts metallic clicks and clatters, a clockwork forest alive. ZEEEEOW—a laser beam of sound slices through, crescendos and falls. WOMP, WOMP, WOMP—the bassline, if there is any, undulates, serpentine and groovy. TIK, TIK, TIK—staccato rhythms, raindrops on tin. Hark! CLINK, CLANK, the fader's jest, with nimble flicks, it weaves. SWOOSH, the sounds like whispers soft, in labyrinthine cleaves. OOOOOH—ghostly voices weave in, KSHHHHH—static bursts, silence jolts. BOOM, CRASH, WHIRRR, ZEEEEOW—a sonic explosion in crescendo. KSHHHH, KSHHHH, the static's cry, as fader's hand doth play. ZEEEEOW, the laser's arc, 'tis music's bright array. Nothing can be synchronized. The crossfader flickers, dropping metal songs played on bass. The final notes hang, then silence. The final notes hang.

These are my first explorations with electroacoustic or experimental music. Back from 1998, they were all made with two Shure SM58 microphones and a Roland VS-840, i.e. without any computer.




I imagine that this corresponds to my own intention at that time: create long and deep atmospheres with a sense of narration.
