The Afro-Cubist

Originally written for the Commix Independent Colorguard in the Sacramento, CA area for 2014 exhibition performance.

This piece came from a concept by Timothy Lee, about a person feeling trapped and wanting to escape from such an easily breakable cage. 

The piece used in performance had minor adjustments and featured a script by Lee, narrated by me. This is the quintessential instrumental version.

Originally written for the Kennedy High School B Colorguard in Sacramento, CA for NCBA competition.

This is a piece for 2 pianos, four hands. The concept presented to me was fairly simple: a frolic in the cold winter.

I decided on a simple “narrative”: The piece starts out with the notion of a light dusting of snowflakes until the heavy snowfall sets in.  The snowfall calms just enough for those that love the snow to play outside.  A short frenzy of a storm interrupts the frolic until it finally subsides and a blanket of white covers all in sight.  While there’s a break in the storm, the snow returns to finish out the day when those who play outside return to their warm homes.

With that loose structure I began to play with the different timbres of the two pianos, and tried to create textures and movement that might mimic both the various types of snowfall and the playfulness of one enjoying the snowy cold.  The main goal was to keep everything moving along, attempting to make the constant tempo in the main body feel slower or faster in different sections without actually changing the tempo.  Like layers of snow, I wanted the four hands to produce their own layers that simultaneously created and took up space, so that each part was interwoven into the others without making the piece too dense.
