John Gibbs and Steel Funk

With a string of unique personal and musical accomplishments, Dr. John A. Gibbs holds a very special place in the world of pop music and the steel drum. At the age of fourteen, John Gibbs and his friend, Patrick Arnold, formed a “pan band” named, Our Boys Steel Band in their homeland, The Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. During these formative years, John Gibbs and his musical friends competed in pan band competitions, entertained tourists at hotels and appeared in films shot on the twin islands. 
John Gibbs moved to Jamaica to study science at the University of the West Indies where he earned his undergraduate and graduate degrees and formed The Jamaica All Stars Steel Band. This was the start of a highly successful dual career in science and music that eventually took him to the United States. Once in the states, Dr. Gibbs’ goals came more clearly into focus. He became determined to evolve a new musical genre by fusing the unique instruments and rhythms of Trinidad’s “island sound” with traditional European instruments and American jazz/pop music. In short, Dr. Gibbs wanted to make a place for the steel drum in the then conventional pop music world. 
To accomplish this ambitious goal, John Gibbs joined with the well-known recording engineer, Dave Moyssiadis who quickly suggested the hiring of the young composer, arranger and conductor, Louis deLise. Together, the production team of Gibbs, Moyssiadis and deLise went on to create a new recording venture that featured Dr. Gibbs’ new pan band, The Unlimited Sound of Steel Orchestra (The U.S. Steel Orchestra) in combination with a 30-piece studio orchestra of brass, strings and rhythm. Their first album, Steel Funk, was released to great success in 1976. Several selections from the album made it onto the Billboard magazine dance charts, received world-wide airplay and became very popular in discos. Subsequent releases by Gibbs, Moyssiadis and deLise include the hit, “J’Ouvert,” included as a special bonus track on this album.
