A set of five graphic panels devised to serve as starting points for performers to interpret, improvise and depart from.

Always wishing to explore new aspects of my writing for EE I wanted to really focus on and push the possibilities around my use of graphics. With previous pieces of mine that use graphic elements I noticed that these graphics were in fact being used as a form of notation in a prescribed manner instead of using them in an abstract way often found in graphic scores.

Panels is an attempt to return these graphics to an abstract use. I have tried to devise the panels around the players paying particular attention to the sonic qualities and textures of drums and live electronics. Whilst not being able to make them entirely abstract I have been able to loose the narrative nature found in previous pieces hopefully turning the prescribed in to suggestive points of inspiration for the players to make their own with improvisation truly at the heart of the work towards Wadada Leo Smith’s creative music aspiration.
