Pauls Sawyers 50th.  I was invited to play for Paul's 50th and i was unsure what to play. The party was full of all our old friends from way back to the early 90's.  Phil Youngman Ripped it up playing some golden oldies. I had folders of new stuff, vocal stuff knowing Paul loves his vocals. Backup folders and backup folders just in case i needed to go in a certain direction.  I was playing last after Paul Sawyer who had also ripped it up and David Ricardo who flew in from Italy. So thought why not smash out the oldies.  I had spent some time at home going through my vinyl collection and digitising the best of the best.  Tweaking the EQ's a little then recording it to digital file just for the party.  I had James Zabiela and Tom Budden train spotting from the back of the dance floor.  Everyone was in the party mode.  These old tunes still rocked big time.   This mix was recorded Sunday night as i was in the mood for a mix.  Some of the mixes are a little rough as i still had to work them despite them now being digitised.  An instant time machine back to the best days of our lives young and free.  Dancing every weekend in the only club in town called the Rhino.  Would love to hear your feedback.

I'm going to try and put into words some context about this live set recording in a magical space, with amazing cool people and an uplifting atmosphere.   This set was recorded live on Saturday afternoon. I started around 5:30pm and played for an hour and a half. 

From the first record I had none other than Nick Muir (John Digweeds right hand man) by my side egging on the crowd for me.  We had so many laughs I can't even remember what about.

I knew it would be a challenge to keep the dance floor busy as I was playing on the  inside stage on a very hot day.  People would come in get into it and start dancing, then overheat and leave.  We would do the same thing no matter how great the music was.  

There were 4 other stages.  3 of them outside.  The heat was immense over the whole weekend.  Most choosing to stay outside in the shade where every now and then a cool breeze would waft by in the +30 in direct sunlight.

The mini Festival was held in the North East part of NL, called Elp 2 hours from Amsterdam on the high speed train.  This was their 3rd party if I am correct.   
For me as a long time DJ from the beginning of proper dance music around the early 90's, after playing internationally as a pro dj, this party was very special for me and everyone who attended.

We had 3 friends Tim & Debbie + Chris drive all the way from IOW just to join us for this amazing event.  So we had a mini UK crew that we could share this experience with.  They got there a few hours before us on Friday to set up camp literally right by the main stage.  Tim was texting me before we got there saying this place is awesome.

The people in this festival community are between the ages of 30ish up to as old as i can't even say maybe +70 at least. All veteran music lovers no doubt about that.  Every person was unique, no one had similar style and all dressed to impress in their unique way. 
 
No egos, No chasing guys or girls, no attitude between any of the + 40 volunteers who helped for 6 days 16 hours a day to get this pulled off.

Every Dj i met was supportive and respectful and loving being part of this event.  
Hugs and handshakes with no attitude or ego that I have to say is extremely rare between Dj's.  

I am very honoured to be in this group of talented awesome spiritual people in every way shape and form. 

I remeber saying to my wife Ani  at the end of the night when dancing on the main stage.  The only rubbish i could see was one cigarette butt.  I wish i took a picture as this is unheard of anywhere else i have been.

Everyone was torn between where they wanted to be.  How hot it was in that place, How much energy was needed to be in that place.  How hot they wanted to get dancing in that place and torn between other Dj's in other spaces some spaces cooler some hotter.  Some playing more chilled, some harder and rocking.  You found yourself just wandering about over the whole weekend going with whatever your instincts told you.  I have never been to a Festival where every Dj was playing so good you wanted to stay.  But then other Dj's were also playing really great music and you didn't want to miss anyone.  So choosing who you listened to was a constantly changing pattern following the vibes.

Smiles all round with zero attitude from anyone you bumped into, trod on or spilt drink..!!

What a weekend.  I am really happy with this set. I have held back releasing recent peak time sets for a while now knowing I wanted to record something special, a moment in time captured now forever.

PHIL MOONFACE THOMPSON - Super Magical Music NYE LIVE STREAM 2024

As I was working on my latest self release on Bandcamp, I was thinking it might be cool to ask Erik Bruce to do a compilation of only my tracks.   I've done a few myself over the years but never has anyone else done a mix using just MOONFACE tracks.  He said yes and I sent him most of my tracks.  It must have taken him ages to sort the playlist and record this.  Massive thanks to Erik.  It's taken me a couple of weeks to get through this epic 4 hour plus mix.  For me its quite odd hearing my tracks in a mix by someone else.  Most of these tracks are all available either from Bandcamp or online shops.

SHOW 12 MOONFACE BIRTHDAY + BENSUB ELECTRO LIVE STREAM - May 24

This set I am really pleased to share with you. Mainly because this music is exactly how I love to play in the higher tempos, the energy, the stuff I love when given the chance to make people dance and escape reality just for a short time. 

Some context for this set was recorded between 4:30am to 6:30am Friday May the 24th. (Saturday morning) 

On the 26th of May 1918 Georgia declared Independence day from the Russian Empire and again in 1991 as the Soviet Union collapsed. Today, Tbilisi is in a massive conflict right now with Russia trying to control things and all of the youth really wanting to be part of Europe obviously. Georgia is in a very tricky position with Russia still occupying 20% of their territory in total with the recent occupation since 2008 and currently trying to influence their political moves and laws, with no actual help from anyone. 

For many years they have been torn and invaded from the North, South, East and West. Always stood their ground, keeping their faiths, traditions and language that is one of the few unique languages left on this planet. 

This set was recorded at a party i played at whilst I was in Tbilisi for my wife's 40th celebrations back in her homeland. I was playing last minute at a party that was previously postponed because of the demonstrations just 2 weeks prior. It's been 20 years now since my first time I played in Tbilisi, Georgia. My claim to fame is, I was one of the 1st International Dj's to play there. So everytime I return I try to play somewhere and it's always been awesome. 

Gvancika the Dj before me who I have also known for many years now played an awesome set. Iban Mendoza from Spain was playing a live set downstairs and was rocking it to say the least. He was supposed to stop at 3am and then everyone would go upstairs to the balcony for some afterhours action if you still wanted more. Iban was rocking it so much he didn't want to stop and ended up playing for 6 hours. So Gvancika did the best she could to keep the dance floor rocking and that she did very well. Deep underground sounds to the few that wanted some fresh air as our room was a kind of arched massive outdoors balcony area. 

This trip was really special getting to know more of Ani's family and friends, becoming closer than ever before. Reconnecting with the people who used to look after me when I played in either Batumi or Tbilisi so many times now I have lost count how many times. We drive by venues and I can say: I played in that place... I played in that place. 

One thing that is obvious is they really care about their independence, family and friends and most of all sticking together. Despite all their dividing beliefs they are survivors and fighters. Always have been and always will be. 

Everytime I have played in this part of the world magic has happened, that is safe to say. Thank You Georgia plus my extended family and friends for accepting me as family and always supporting me. 

Turn it up, play it loud and try to understand the turmoil and emotions happening in this part of the world as we are all given the chance to escape through the international language of dance music.

Phil MOONFACE Thompson - Tbilisi Afterhours Set May 24 4:30am to 6:30am

This vinyl mix i recorded back in 2010.. At the time i was celebrating the most influential music in my life when i was 19 years old back in 1989.  I lived out in the so called sticks, farmer land near Winchester.. Not in the city and for some reason there was an underground night club out the back of a pup on a main road deep in the Hampshire countryside playing this kind of music every weekend not far from where i lived. This was the most amazing music i have ever heard and at the time none of it was in the top 40 charts except the odd one or two that broke through.  Then it exploded.. House music became massive and as time went by i bought every record i remember being blown away by on the dance floor out the back of a pup in UK.  Most dance House music to this day is born from these grooves.

Here we are once again back to reality after escaping our psychotic world we live in run by madmen destroying our future hit after hit.  Yet there is a way to escape and it's through the love of music you can find this rare retreat.  A magical place in the middle of the countryside in the Netherlands.  Last year was so good, if you missed my set then check it out below in my SoundCloud.  This year I never thought they could improve  on how awesome it was last year but they did.  I was booked to play a 2 hour set in the Living Room, a cosy hot space in the day and a warm place at night as it tends to get very cold outside as the sun disappears.  Legend Harry AKA Lemon 8 was playing before me and kept the dance floor busy and that's very hard to do as there are always other temptations going on somewhere else to visit or check out.

Although I was booked to play for 2 hours I ended up playing for 4+ hours.  The reason being is without me knowing at the time Nick Muir who was supposed to DJ after me and close the room ended up moving to the main stage and played outside.  At the time everyone was looking for Nick.  His bag under the DJ desk had gone and we started jumping to conclusions. After about 15 minutes I got told Nick is playing on the Main Stage and I can now play until the end if I wanted to. Silly question!  Yeah of course. Suddenly I could turn the gas up and put the pedal to the metal so to speak.   As always I am prepared to play longer if needed and always have backup tracks just in case.  I really enjoy playing peak time long sets so I was in my element. The only downside is I was really looking forward to hearing Nick play.  I heard he played awesome on the big outdoor rig and in a way it worked out for both of us.   

I was hoping that a guy I know had recorded the whole night.  He said it was ok for me to have the full audio file after and then I would chop it up and separate each DJ set.  As I was about to fly I was eager to hear my set back once home, as I always love to listen again and that's why I always record my sets. I was in the airport and messaged him asking could he email me the audio file.  Then I had a reply saying really sorry it was not recorded. BOOOOOOO!!!  Apparently earlier on in the day there was a problem with the mixer.  When it got switched someone forgot to plug the recorder back in.  GUTTED!!  Live sets are always way better than studio recorded sets as there is a magic and energy that is somehow retained in a live recording.  I tend to mix harder and faster overlapping tracks more than when playing to the studio wall.    

At first I was pretty gutted.  It was such a special extended set. On the Sunday after I had so much awesome feedback from people who heard me play i was buzzing and still am.  I thought I really have to try and rerecord it.   So as soon as I was home I jumped on my computer and tried to remember what I played.  With help of some of my wifes video time stamps I think I managed to get most of the tracks correct and in the order I played them. 

The thing is the rerecording is now much longer than i actually played due to maybe one or two extra tracks.  Because I tend to play quite a bit faster than the original tempo of the tracks it's hard to gauge in advance if I had the full 4 hours worth of music or not.  Also parts of the night are a bit of a blur and as I was improvising for the last 2 hours I can't fully remember exactly what I played.  I remember the stand out tracks but not some of the newer ones I played.

As i was rerecording this i kept having visions of the whole 3 days festival it was like time travelling back and reliving the special moments.

This is really for the people who managed to stay in my room and hear me out as really they could have been tempted to leave and hear the main man Nick Muir who was now playing at the same time as me. 

So a really big thanks to all those who stuck with me for the full set.

Roll on summer time for some more fun times at this spot by the sea water. The food looks amazing and the smells from peoples meals kept me hungry all night.

It was a night of many firsts. First time I’d been raving with Phil in ages, first time I’d met his mates, first time at this rave den, first time I’d been out out in a long while. 

In spite of being nearly 50, I’d firmly hold on to the belief I can still party like 20 year old me, so I started drinking in the afternoon. By 11.30, predictably, I was flagging. But you rally, you’re supporting a mate, on go the big boy pants and you drag your sorry ass back to the dance floor. 

The music as you will hear, was excellent. The club, suitably dark and dingy. Located away from the usual spots, Bear Cave is a hidden oasis of beats under a guitar rock bar, walk past and you wouldn’t even realise we were there. A hidden gem waiting for someone to find it. 

Warmth and community exudes from the faithful crowd, a rave family of sorts; a motley crew to say the least, but all there for the right reasons. It was the most ‘90s club space I’ve been in since, well, the nineties. Full credit to promoter Bo and his girlfriend Tandi for making such an inviting and inclusive party. It has huge potential and I wish them every future success. He’s booking the right people, running the night with impeccable professionalism and having a ball doing it. As did we.

It was Friday night and i was expecting it to be hot and similar vibes to the Friday before where it was totally awesome the whole night (listen back here on SC).  Nope as always expect the unexpected in the UK.  It was over cast with 30 mph gusts of wind down by the sea and bladdy freezing compared to last Friday.  As always i was prepared with my tracky bottoms, sweater and my mountain bike jacket.  One of the regs Kevin said i looked like i was going snowboarding thats how cold it was. So not many people outside as it was just too cold. This reflected in the deepness of this journey.

This night was quite mellow with scattered clouds and a medium wind.  Not as hot as previous weeks.  I bought loads of new music the night before so most of  this was all fresh to me.  I really enjoy playing new music, even if they may have been released a few months ago or maybe more.  Had quite a few compliments as people were leaving which always makes it worth the effort.  The hours of preparation that goes into play long 5 hour set always pays off once you are in front of an audience.  Foot tapping, little babies grooving and dancing makes it such an amazing vibe to see and perform for.

This was my 4th time to Dj'ing in the countryside of NL, a place called Elp.  My 3rd Hartstocht Festival Festival which has grown into a magical yearly ritual.

I never presumed I was going to play there this year as there's such a wealth of talent in the Netherlands right now.  So back in March when I was invited back again, I asked if it was ok if my mate Tim Ashwel AKA Syncronicity could join me for a B2B set and spice it up a little.  Yes was the answer.  Tim has travelled with me for the last 3 times now with a growing number of friends. So he's more than earned his stripes.  We play B2B quite often so it seemed a natural thing for us to play together at this magical festival.

Our room is called the Living Room because it really feels like you are in a big living industrial room.  Carpets, sofas, paintings on the walls. 

The music built steadily over the day.  Lemon 8 played before us, a very deep underground chugging set that built perfectly.  Until the end where he played a track as a tribute to his very recently passed partner.   Harry has a big following in his own country and many people were there dancing in support for his loss.  Emotions were high.  We were playing after Harry.  He said to me as I was standing next to him for most of his set "I'm going to play something special for his partner last so please let it play out"  I had presumed we would so had already planned to give him some space after his set. He played last "What a wonderful world by Louis Amstrong".  It brought most of us to tears with pictures of her on the screens behind us.    In all my 30 + years of Dj'ing i've never had to wipe the tears from my eyes as i did at the start of our set.  We let the music stop and the cheers and tears flowed. I could barely see where to put the USB stick.

Then we got stuck in and played a rocking set alongside my mate Tim.  We smashed it out.  Nick Muir was beside us most of the set.  Torn between us and Danny Howells on the main stage.  Our mates who had travelled from the Isle of White and up north were there at the front loving it.

Thank You So much to Hilbrand AKA DepGlobe & Barbara, Bob, Renee and their amazing crew of volunteers who took all year preparing for this.  

Without these unique loveable beings this event would not exist at all. 
I truly am so blessed and thankful to be invited back once again.

Deeply entrenched with more than 30 years in the music industry, Phil MOONFACE Thompson is transcendent with hope and positivity. Phil’s online catalogue is growing with a stack of MOONFACE releases, not forgetting remixes and DJ compilations and endless online mixes. 

His early exposure to the superstars saw Sasha choosing “U Get So Give” for his legendary Essential Mix 2000 and then Bedrock's John Digweed signing “Futurized Fears” and “Overactive” as a double A side for his then brand new Bedrock label. Following the first 12” came a mini album called "BETWEEN WORLDS" on all formats selling out globally way before the digital age just before the Internet. 

Many top DJs from Lee Burridge, Athony Pappa, Danny Howells to Danny Tenaglia, Hernan Cattaneo to Carl Cox supported the MOONFACE sound back in the golden age of dance music.

Phil then became the new Bedrock resident covering about 5 years warming up monthly in London and Brighton taking over from Howells. As well as touring the globe on the best DJ agency at the time playing at many festivals and events flying the MOONFACE flag. Playing hot spots in Bali, Japan, Russia, Eastern Europe, Georgia, Greece, Malta, South America. Holding up a long-term residency at the legendary Decadance club Thessaloniki, Greece.  

Then came his single "Across the Gulf of Space" released on Bedrock 18 -Signals compilation.  Also current releases and remixes for Future Avenue on remix duties for up and coming Bristol star Tojogo.  Along with releases on Critical Elements, Krafted, If You Wait, ASTIR, Gibbon and Mirabilis, Wolf Trap & Mindwarp, Stripped Digital. 

Back in December 2020 Phil self released for the first time a new double album exclusively on Bandcamp called "PUSHOVER MANKIND".   A collection of 8 weird abstract chill out styled tracks, along with 8 dance floor underground styled tracks. Limited signed & numbered double CD albums are still available. 

2021 John Digweed played a MOONFACE track called U HAVE TO CHANGE in his Miami set playing B2B with Sasha.  This is a unique typical MOONFACE styled uplifting melodic summer time journey.  This track also features on Phil's BBC Radio 1 late night Wind Down set you can now find on YouTube.  Also in 2021 Phil got to work on a remix for the legendary Jan Johnston called One Step Beyond.  This was an original track by Paul Sawyer who had the chance to work with Jan on a number of original vocal tracks.
June 2023 Phil released a fresh new concept album on Sounds of Krafted called FAKE PLANET.  Featuring 14 MOONFACE original unique tracks taking you on a deep hypnotic journey.  You can hear the continuous mix on his Phil MOONFACE Thompson Soundcloud page.

2024 sees Phil continue hosting his FUTURIZED monthly show on Frisky Radio plus presenting his LIVE STREAM shows where he invites DJ mates to play sets via Mixcloud whenever the timing works out with his mates.   Also a brand new original track on a brand a new UK label called Critical Elements.  A remix for Rate & Flow called Deal With It. On top of that Phil has made a brand new remix of his own original track released on Bedrock back in 2001 called Naan Madol. Soon to be available on Bandcamp.
With all the music Phil creates and the DJ mixes he consistently records,  he still loves to Dj but is very selective in where he plays these days.   Playing in the Netherlands for DepGlobe and his now massive Dutch Dj Progressive collective is an honour to say the least..
