Ruyer and Embryogenesis

This talk will address the hauntingly strange writings of Raymond Ruyer, a contemporary of Gilbert Simondon and a strong influence on the writings of Gilles Deleuze. It provides a broad introduction to his writings on embryogenesis, the processes by which a being produces itself, a concept he uses to address how sub-atomic, atomic and molecular forms create themselves, and on which all forms of life - from viruses to humans and their social creations - must capitalise in order to create themselves.

BIO:
Elizabeth Grosz is the Jean Fox O'Barr Women's Studies Professor in Trinity College of Arts and Sciences at Duke University. She is the author of many books, including, The Incorporeal: Ontology, Ethics and the Limits of Materialism and Chaos, Territory, Art.  

The Philosophies of Difference group (PoD) is a Melbourne-based group of scholars working in continental philosophy and interested in problems that have been marginal to the dominant traditions of Western thought. We engage with approaches including: critical philosophy of race, decolonial thought, feminist theory, Indigenous studies, philosophy of disability, philosophy of nature, queer theory, and trans philosophy. We especially welcome participation and contribution from women, people of colour, and other minority groups. PoD is run by Rebecca Hill (RMIT), Ryan Gustafsson (University of Melbourne), and Helen Ngo (Deakin).
