Phillip Jones Jr., better known as PHIL, is a budding young hip-hop recording artist, songwriter, and music producer from Chicago, Illinois. Joining the massive influx of talented young artists from the city, 23-year-old PHIL brings a completely unique sound to the scene. During his early childhood years, PHIL was brought up on soul music. His grandmother was a jazz enthusiast, and his uncle was in a rhythm and blues band. The untimely death of PHIL’s grandmother when he was only five years old was a catalyst for introversion and paranoia. Steering away from the music that roused painful memories, PHIL found comfort in hip-hop and rap. Influenced by the works of 2Pac, 50 Cent, Biggie, Eminem, Dr. Dre and Lupe Fiasco, PHIL began to write his own rhymes during his early teenage years. In high school, he started recording rhymes over beats he found online and releasing the songs on Facebook and YouTube under the pseudonym Philly Phil. He wrote, recorded and engineered three mixtapes under the name. PHIL started experimenting with beat-maker software to save money on productions. The hobby burgeoned into a passion and a career. In 2012, he dropped Philly from his stage name and became a member of the hip-hop collective Robot Army and released a self-produced EP, “The Human Body,” which highlighted the emcee/producers potential. The multifaceted Robot Army collective includes rappers, singers, writers, producers, music engineers, videographers and graphic designers who advocate creative innovation as an alternative to crime and violence. Robot Army mates Jason Michael Davis, Tony Shane and OneFiftyOne are all featured on PHIL’s widely anticipated debut album, Cool Chicago. Also featured on the album is Vic Spencer, a respected figure in underground Chicago hip-hop. Denouncing the term “Chiraq” as propaganda, PHIL refutes the popular vilification of young Black men in Chicago on his album. Scheduled for a spring 2016 release date, Cool Chicago is self-produced and tells PHIL’s coming of age story. His distinctive productions are soulful, electrifying and eloquently laced with pain and beauty. Proven a perfect complement to the music is PHIL’s intricate flow and intimate lyrics. Cool Chicago is aesthetically moving.
