The universe is situated on a brane. All the galaxies we see and all the light that reaches us are part of this brane and cannot leave it, except for gravitation, which sees all the dimensions of total space-time. Our brane, or more precisely, the universe making up our brane, would float peacefully in a super-universe made up of immense additional dimensions.
