Armed with attention-commanding and lyrically sharp bars, Phlow lets her words take the lead in her dynamic new visuals for “Reputation.” 

The Lagos, Nigeria-based MC receives ample screen time in these slick visuals from director Rcube, but it’s only right that her rhymes are the focal point. Her powerful prose gets complemented by sleek animations, sharp cuts, and tight editing, all of which is bolstered by the head-nodding, rugged production from Teck-Zilla. And for those wondering, yes, that’s a flip of Yvonne Fair's classic “Let Your Hair Down,” ringing out across the instrumental.

Just as the track itself was a strong introduction to Phlow and her commanding presence on the mic, the “Reputation” video emphasizes that she’s a rapper you better start following, lest you be left behind once she delivers more material. Be on the lookout for new music from Phlow, and the rest of her Str8Buttah crew for that matter, in the near future.

Reputation

‘Mind, Body & Phlow’ is the impressive, jaw-dropping new EP from gifted Lagos, Nigeria-based artist Phlow, who made waves last fall with the project's supremely ill lead single, "Reputation."

While that neck-snapper of a track showcased that Phlow could straight spit, she reveals other sides of her artistry across the seven tracks on here. She shows off her ability to write a love-centric tune on the melodic "Reminder" with singer Gogo, lets her hair down for the bouncy, Maka-featured "Looking at Nobody," and deftly blends hip-hop and soul with Maka once again on "The Final One."

Phlow's still ripping apart beats, though, and that's evident on the aforementioned "Reputation" and brand-new cut "Bank It." Armed with a "99 Problems"-sampling hook and slapper of an instrumental, she lets loose for a minute of pure rhyming. And it's only right that she brings it all home with a remix of "Reputation," which flips the bangin' original into a laid-back reggae jam.

Looking at Nobody (feat. Maka)

It takes serious talent to say so much with so little, but anyone who’s listened to the Lagos-bred rapper, Phlow, knows just how gifted she is as an artist. And she’s putting all of her skills on full display here with, 'Asuai,' a brief but gripping mini-EP, produced entirely by Swedish beatsmith, Ryko.

In a little more than five minutes, Phlow pieces together a tightly knit narrative that follows a young girl falling in and out of love. You get the head-over-heels vibes on “Little Girl, Big’Ole World” and “Building Walls,” the latter of which features such striking imagery as “Want to color you with all my thoughts.” But like most things, the love can’t last. 

The relationship begins to fall apart on “Cracked Windows,” and Phlow realizes it’s time for her to end it on “The Exit.” Here, too, she pulls you in with her story-driven and vibrantly written lyrics. When she spits, “Remember all the times my lungs would fill with you, I’d savor,” you know exactly what she’s getting at.

Of course, Asuai—it means “My Year” in Ukwani, a dialect spoken by the Delta Igbos in Eastern Nigeria—is notable for its rich, diverse instrumentals. Phlow and Ryko apparently connected via Soundcloud and began laying the groundwork for this project, which boasts beats from the producer’s 'feng/shui' tape. They take on a new life here, though, especially the dusty and ‘80s-reminiscent beat on “The Exit.” Asuia is now available for stream, courtesy of Str8Buttah Productions.

Asuai (Mini EP)

For the 3rd installment of Phlow’s ongoing #PhlowFridays’ series, the Nigerian native returns with a nostalgic track titled, “A Different Broth,” produced by Teck-Zilla. For this offering, Phlow pays homage to Lagos, the city that raiser her, and pinpoints the exact moment when she picked up the pen: “I had the radio turned up on blast, 2AM alone I’m coming from a show that passed/ My bedtime stayin’ up so they don’t sleep on this, I think they woke a sleeping giant in this game oh sh*t.” Phlow continues by pledging that she plans to be different, and not follow the crowd to achieve success. To date, it’s plain to see that her music is reflective of such a promise.

A Different Broth (prod. by Teck-Zilla) #PhlowFridays

After a successful run of a 4 week music campaign titled #PhlowFridays. The budding emcee Phlow wraps 2016 with a dancehall tinged single/video titled Love It Or Not featuring up and coming singer Khandie. The song is essentially Phlow blocking out the naysayers and undesirable elements in order to stay the course to get what is deserving of her in this rap game. The video was shot on location in different parts of Lagos where the visual crew follows Phlow for a recording session, a radio interview ending with a performance at a live improve show which all happened in a day. The video also sums up her exploits since she dropped her debut EP (Mind,Body & Phlow) early in 2016 from being featured on big international sites and performing on the same stage with some of Nigeria's top acts.

After releasing an ill all-female posse cut with members of her Str8Buttah Productions crew, Lagos-based artist Phlow goes solo and gets fired up in the video for her new single, “Str8 Up.”

Lyrically, she’s as sharp as ever, spitting slick lyrics centering on the concept of never settling and never slowing down as an artist. And she does it over a more minimalist and booming instrumental from frequent collaborator Teck-Zilla, who’s definitely showing off his versatility here, too. These two have a number of standout tracks together over the past few years, and they only seem to outdo each other with each subsequent release.

While Phlow’s lyrics absolutely drive the visuals for “Str8 Up,” there’s plenty to be said for the stellar work of the directorial crew, RCube Vision. They drop bits and pieces of her bars throughout the video by highlighting her particularly tough rhymes with animation, which is complemented by some serious dance moves. It all feels like a celebration of the global Hip-Hop culture we’re living in, and “Str8 Up” is one hell of an anthem for it.

Phlow wraps up 2017 with her bravado laced effort titled "Pre Flux Freestyles". A 3 minute long medley made up of random verses she has crafted over the years.  Starting off with "Hennessy", she shows her true amazonian nature over the classic "Don't look any further" backdrop, she then switches to a laid back flow on a smoothed out version of  Mobb Deep's "Shook ones" before wrapping it up with a slight nod to Jigga over the "Feeling It" sample. The medley serves as a reminder to everyone not to sleep on her skillset.

"Pre Flux Freestyles" is a free one off track while she preps her debut Lp "Flux" for next year. A new single/video is expected to drop in early 2018. She is also working on several collaborations with surprise artists from Canada and the States.

Phlow packs vivid imagery, engaging storytelling, and emotionally stirring nostalgia into her latest project, 'Asuai (Vol. 2)'—and she somehow does it all in less than seven minutes. She embraces the warmth and soul of the production provided by Montreal’s Dr. MaD, whose beats rattle and creak beneath her smooth vocals. 

Hailing from Lagos, Nigeria, Phlow’s growth since releasing the first 'Asuai' in 2016 is apparent, and you can hear it in the confidence in her voice. She flows so naturally over Mad’s production that you almost get the sense she was in the room as he was crafting the instrumentals, blacking out lyrically over the dusty sounds from years past. 

As Phlow tells it, each instrumental helped shape the theme of each track, which subsequently led to the greater vibe of 'Asuai (Vol. 2).' It’s a musical trip back to her younger days, to a time where life was simpler and filled with hope (opener “Callow.”). But it was also a time of realization (“On Your Own”) and reflection (“Musing/Reverie”), ultimately leading to her answering the question of “What advice would you give your younger self?” on closing track “BYOH (Be Your Own Hero).”

For Phlow, those words of wisdom would be: “Revel in all the fun you have now, be you, and just work hard.” The thing is, from listening to Asuai '(Vol. 2),' it’s clear that she’s already taken those words to heart.

Asuai (Vol. 2)

Phlow kicks off 2019 with a 6 track EP that embodies her growth and experiences in life and the music industry. The EP takes a more melody-driven approach as she dabbles into singing at certain parts while the vocal talents of singers Maka, Khandie, and Scarlet shine through on the respective songs they were on. Phlow holds her own as the main figure on all the tracks with the exception of the intro which has Vitamin Cea on it.

Phlow is a Lagos,Nigeria based emcee who started penning rhymes as an outlet of expression. 
 After obtaining a degree in computer-science Phlow moved back to Lagos and by happen-stance met Str8buttah founder/producer Teck-Zilla at a show via a mutual friend. Both then developed a mutual working chemistry which led to the recording of her debut EP.
   Presently she has 2 EPs to her credit, “Mind,Body & Phlow” and “Asuai: A Mini EP”, a handful of singles “Phlowetic Justice”, “Love It or Not” and was featured on top music sites such as TheSource.com, HipHopDX, 2Dopeboyz,Egotripland, Elle magazine(France) amongst others.
  She is currently preparing a new wave of songs while working with different producers from around the globe as she positions herself to be a force to be reckoned with in Hip-Hop at home and abroad.
