Phoenix Calida Breaks Down The Effects Of Decriminalizing Sex Work

Some of the internet’s biggest adult websites, including Pornhub, are now blocking access to Utah users over a new age verification law that takes effect on Wednesday.

Pornhub and other adult sites controlled by its parent, MindGeek, began blocking visitors with Utah-based IP addresses this week. Now, instead of seeing adult content when visiting those sites, affected users are shown a message expressing opposition to SB287, the Utah law signed by Gov. Spencer Cox in March that creates liability for porn sites that make their content available to people below the age of 18.

“As you may know, your elected officials in Utah are requiring us to verify your age before allowing you access to our website,” the message said. “While safety and compliance are at the forefront of our mission, giving your ID card every time you want to visit an adult platform is not the most effective solution for protecting our users, and in fact, will put children and your privacy at risk.”

The statement, accompanied by a video of an adult actor reading the message on-camera, added that the age verification requirement could drive users “to sites with far fewer safety measures.” And it called for policymakers to “identify users by their device” rather than by requiring them to upload their photo ID.

“Until a real solution is offered, we have made the difficult decision to completely disable access to our website in Utah,” the message said, concluding with a call for Utahns to “demand device-based verification solutions” from policymakers.

The state of Maine is embarking on a controversial experiment by partially decriminalizing prostitution in an attempt to eliminate exploitation of sex workers — adopting a model advocates say is a first in the country.

Gov. Janet Mills (D) signed a bill into law Monday that will eliminate penalties for those who sell sex while leaving in place laws against the purchase of it.

A former prosecutor and attorney general, Mills vetoed a similar measure in 2021 but approved the bill this year after a conversation with the famed author and feminist Gloria Steinem.

Maine Passes Nordic Model

Architect Rex Heuermann was arrested in July 2023 in connection with the deaths of Megan Waterman, Melissa Barthelemy and Amber Costello, whose bodies were found at Gilgo Beach, on the South Shore of Long Island, more than a decade ago. He's also the prime suspect in the death of Maureen Brainard-Barnes.

Grace, a legal analyst and self described journalist who has spent years  investigating crimes, will be joined by a panel of experts to dig into Heuermann's actions and charges.

He obtained the sword months before the attack and had it inscribed with a derogatory word for women and "slayer," court heard.

On the day of the stabbing, he wore a long, dark coat and hat, and carried a note that said "long live the incel rebellion" inside a zip-close bag, court heard.

Arzaga, who was working at reception, greeted him as a customer, court heard. The man stabbed her in the neck without warning and continued to stab her after she'd fallen to the ground.

Incel Sword Killer Gets Sentenced

Ruby Doss died from being strangled and hit on the head multiple times in January of 1986 , Spokane County's medical examiner testified Tuesday.

Recounting how Doss was killed opened the second week of former Pasco police officer Richard Aguirre's murder trial. Retired police officers testified about how DNA evidence was handled, and a clerk at an adult book store testified about seeing Doss, who worked as a prostitute, the night of her death.

Doss was 27 when she was found dead in a commercial area off Sprague Avenue not long after she was killed. Her death went unsolved for decades until Aguirre was connected to the case through DNA.

Aguirre, now 59, faces one count of first-degree murder.

Spokane County Medical Examiner Dr. Veena Singh reviewed Doss' autopsy because the pathologist who initially conducted the autopsy almost 38 years ago has since died.

A former Pasco Police Officer was sentenced today in a Spokane cold case murder that spanned 38 years and resulted in two trials

Twenty-seven-year-old Ruby Doss was found murdered in 1986 in East Spokane, her case was worked by the Spokane Police Department for decades with no conclusion or arrest of a suspect. 

In 2015 DNA collected from a condom found at the Ruby Doss crime scene was matched to Richard Aguirre.  Aguirre’s DNA had been submitted during an unrelated rape investigation in Franklin County.  Aguirre was tried in that case and found not guilty by a jury in 2017. 

At the time Ruby Doss was murdered Aguirre was living in Spokane serving in the U.S. Airforce and stationed at Fairchild.  He then moved to the Tri-cities where in 1988 he became a Pasco Police Officer. 

In 2016 Aguirre was charged with murder for the killing of Ruby Doss but the charges were dropped in 2017 due to a lack of evidence.  In 2021 the Spokane County Prosecutors office brought the charge on Aguirre again but a jury could not agree on a verdict and a mistrial was declared. 

In 2023 Aguirre was once again tried and in December convicted of first-degree murder for the killing of Ruby Doss.  Today the judge handed down a sentence of 25 years, which fell at the high end of the range of 20 to 26 years.  Aguirre is now 59 years old.  

Ruby’s four daughters were able to speak to the court and describe the loss they each experienced and the continuing loss their family has, and will suffer, as now three generations have been deprived of knowing Ruby.  

This case brings closure not just to the family of Ruby Doss but to an entire community as well as generations of Spokane Police Investigators, Spokane County Prosecutors and others who sought justice for Ruby Doss.

"Originally published March 14 by Idaho Reports.The Idaho Senate passed legislation Thursday that would make online pornography publishers and distributors vulnerable to civil liability if a minor accesses harmful material on the internet.

“Our kids are continuously exposed to pornography, and our current laws don’t effectively protect them,” said bill sponsor Sen. Ben Toews, R-Coeur d’Alene. “What you have before you is an effective solution. It uses third-party age verification as a way to block that content from children.”

House Bill 498 would require websites where at least one-third of the content is pornographic to perform “reasonable age verification” to prevent minors from accessing the harmful material. The House unanimously passed the bill on Feb. 14."

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) - A former St. Clair High School teacher who resigned after her OnlyFans page was reported to district officials has been fired after days on a new job.

Brianna Coppage had been a teacher for five years, spending two at St. Clair High School. She was put on leave in October after it was discovered that she was using OnlyFans to supplement her teaching salary.

After her OnlyFans became public, Coppage told First Alert 4 that she had made $1 million on the platform. Her yearly teaching salary was $42,000, she said at the time.

After leaving the district, Coppage told First Alert 4 that she struggled to find her purpose.

KOMO News - "An explosion of sex trafficking," is how one Seattle city council member described what's happening along Aurora Avenue in north Seattle.

Some business owners and residents told KOMO News something needs to be done.

During a recent community public safety meeting, councilmember Cathy Moore said one tool she's considering to address the issue is a proposal to reinstate Seattle’s loitering law.

Police officers who 'brought shame on their uniforms' and let Emma Caldwell's killer Iain Packer walk free for 19 years should be jailed if it is found they 'engaged in criminality', her family's lawyer says. 

Packer, 51, was sentenced to life with a minimum term of 36 years at the High Court in Glasgow this month after being found guilty of murdering the 27-year-old in 2005, as well as 11 rapes and 21 other charges, including sexual assaults, against other women.

Yet 'one of the UK's worst sex offenders' was left to roam the streets for nearly two decades despite officers being repeatedly told Packer 'is the man' and the warped killed taking officers in 2007 to the spot where Emma's body was dumped.

Scotland Police Ignore Sex Workers Reporting Assult

The 60-year-old was first arrested in July 2023 for the deaths of four women whose remains were found in burlap sacks along the Ocean Parkway in New York over a decade ago.

Detectives finally nabbed Heuermann in 2023 after he tossed a pizza box with leftover crust into a Manhattan trash can after the investigation that took more than a decade. The DNA from his crust matched genetic material found on the women's remains.

Heuermann faces charges in connection to the murders of Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, Amber Lynn Costello and Maureen Brainard-Barnes - also known as "The Gilgo Four." Taylor and Costilla were announced has Heuermann's fifth and sixth victims on Thursday.

The announcement comes weeks after authorities returned to Heuermann's Long Island home. At least half a dozen law enforcement agents were spotted in Heuermann's driveway on May 20.

Heuermann is currently being held at the Riverhead Correctional Facility in Suffolk County, about 50 miles from his home.

Suffolk County Sheriff Dr. Errol Toulon Jr. said Heuermann busies himself with reading books, reading his discovery, watching TV and sleeping, according to an Oxygen article.

He has been separated from other inmates "for his safety," according to the article. Toulon called him "very compliant."

Washington, DC - United States Senators Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) today applauded the House passage of the bipartisan End Banking for Human Traffickers Act, which would aid financial institutions in identifying and reporting instances of human trafficking, so that offenders can be prosecuted and victims can be protected. Senators Warren and Rubio originally introduced the companion legislation in the Senate on April 26, 2017.

The End Banking for Human Traffickers Act would direct federal banking regulators to work with law enforcement and financial institutions to combat the use of the financial system for human trafficking. The bill would further increase collaboration between law enforcement and experts in financial crimes by adding financial intelligence and regulatory officers to the President's Interagency Task Force to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons, and require the Task Force to develop recommendations for Congress and regulators that would strengthen anti-money laundering programs to better target human trafficking.

Mexico City lawmakers have given the green light to decriminalize sex work in the capital, hoping it will be a first step to a crackdown on sex trafficking that traps thousands of Mexican women and children.
Lawmakers in Mexico City’s congress on Friday voted 38-0, with eight abstentions, in favor of a bill to remove a line in the civic culture law which said prostitutes and their clients can be fined or arrested if neighbors complained.

Temistocles Villanueva, a local representative with the ruling center-left Morena party, said the new law recognized that people had the right to engage in sex work.


Man who raped, beat and robbed a Vancouver sex worker found guilty of all charges
A Surrey man has been found guilty of all charges in relation to a vicious sex attack and robbery that occurred in a Vancouver park in September 2017.

In a recent Supreme Court of B.C. ruling, Justice Shelley Fitzpatrick found Ezaz Ahmed Razak, 24, guilty of sexual assault causing bodily harm, robbery, unlawful confinement and making threats.

Court heard that Razak, his brother-in-law Michael Sharma and friend Baljit Bains were driving along Kingsway in the early hours of Sept. 2, 2017, after a night at a casino. Sharma stopped the vehicle and a sex-trade worker approached. The goal was to arrange a sexual encounter for Razak.

The woman agreed to a $60 fee for sex for 30 minutes and then walked with Razak to nearby Glen Park. The woman testified that Razak was unable to finish the sex act within the allotted time, at which point she ended the encounter. Over the next half hour Razak forced the woman to perform more sex acts, robbed her of the $60 he had given her, plus $80 she had made earlier doing a cleaning job, choked her, verbally abused her and threatened her with death.

As Prostitution-Related Charges Double In D.C., Lawmakers Are Reintroducing A Sex Work Decriminalization Bill

A bill that would decriminalize sex work in Washington D.C. will be reintroduced at the D.C. Council on Tuesday, this time with four councilmembers in support.

As drafted, the Community Safety and Health Amendment Act of 2019 would “remove certain criminal penalties for engaging in sex work in order to promote public health and safety.” It does not include any measures that would create red light districts in D.C. or otherwise regulate sex work. Coercing people to engage in sex work against their will would still be illegal, as would human and child trafficking.

At-large Councilmembers David Grosso and Robert White, who co-introduced a similar measure in 2017, are now joined by At-large Councilmember Anita Bonds and Ward 1 Councilmember Brianne Nadeau, as jurisdictions across the country are seeing sex work decriminalization movements gain steam. Last term, the original bill was sent to the Judiciary Committee, where it never got a hearing.



We Asked All The 2020 Candidates If The US Should Stop Arresting Sex Workers. Only Four Said Yes.

LGBT, immigrant rights, harm reduction, and criminal justice reform groups, led by people who trade sex, launched the coalition Decrim NY, made up of 20-plus organizations, to decriminalize and decarcerate sex trade in New York state.


Sex work is considered the oldest profession in the world, but lots of candidates running for president in 2020 act like it’s a new issue — and they’re unprepared to talk about it.

Given recent efforts to decriminalize sex work in state legislatures and debates in Congress about the ramifications of some anti-trafficking laws on sex workers, BuzzFeed News asked all the 2020 presidential candidates, including President Donald Trump, to lay out their stance. We asked:

Do you think sex work should be decriminalized?
If so, what changes do you support on the federal level?
Some candidates took clear positions in support of decriminalization, like Rep. Tulsi Gabbard and Sen. Cory Booker, who told BuzzFeed News unequivocally, “Yes, sex work should be decriminalized.”

Sen. Kamala Harris supports decriminalization for sex workers, as does Rep. Seth Moulton (though he has a caveat — he wants to maintain strict penalties for people who solicit prostitution; Harris did not address solicitors). Former senator Mike Gravel, who initially said he was running not to win but rather to try to get different views onto the debate stage, also supports decriminalization.

On the other hand, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio stuck by his view that sex workers should be arrested.

For nearly a decade, Backpage has been demonized by politicians, denounced in legislatures, and dramatically mischaracterized by the press, Hollywood, and well-funded activist groups. As early as 2010, top prosecutors from 21 states claimed the classified-ad platform was "exploiting women and children." In 2012 Washington state passed the first (but not last) law aimed specifically at toppling Backpage, and by 2015 U.S. senators were investigating the company.

Though the Department of Justice shut down Backpage.com in 2018, it still activates strong scorn in some corners. ("They were selling children," the California senator and Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris said in March.) Several founders and former executives of the company—arrested last year on federal charges of conspiracy, facilitating prostitution, and money laundering—are now awaiting a 2020 trial, as they try to fend off prosecutors eager to seize their assets and disqualify their lawyers.

"For far too long, Backpage.com existed as…a place where sex traffickers frequently advertised children and adults alike," said then–Attorney General Jeff Sessions upon their April 2018 arrest. U.S. Attorney Elizabeth Strange alleged that Backpage made "hundreds of millions" by "placing profits over the well-being and safety" of victims.

Claims like these have always been bogus. Now, thanks to memos obtained by Reason, we have proof that prosecutors understood this all along.

Deadly attack at Toronto erotic spa was incel terrorism, police allege

A deadly attack at a Toronto erotic massage parlour three months ago is now being treated as an act of terrorism after police allegedly uncovered evidence it was inspired by misogynist incel ideology.

Charges against the suspect accused of carrying out the Feb. 24 stabbing attack, which killed a woman and injured another, were updated in court on Tuesday to “murder — terrorist activity.”

The suspect, who cannot be named because he is a minor, was also charged with terrorism for the alleged attempted murder of the woman who survived.

He was already facing first-degree and attempted murder charges, but the development means police believe the incident was terrorism-related.

In a joint statement, the RCMP and Toronto Police Service said their investigation had determined the attack “was inspired by the Ideologically Motivated Violent Extremist (IMVE) movement commonly known as INCEL.”

“As a result, federal and provincial Attorney Generals have consented to commence terrorism proceedings, alleging that the murder was terrorist activity … and the attempted murder was terrorist activity.”

Experts said it was the first time a terrorism charge had been laid over violence tied to incels, a term that refers to self-described “involuntary celibates.”
