Lincoln “Sugar” Minott (May 25, 1956 – July 10, 2010) is known in Jamaica and around the world as one of the greatest and most beloved figures in reggae music. From his initial work with The African Brothers, to his genre-defining early dancehall work at Studio One, to his rub-a-dub at Channel One and beyond, Sugar wasn’t just part of reggae, he was at the center of it.

Sugar was also much more than a vocalist – he was a producer who led many of his own recording sessions, ran labels and distribution, and also worked with sound systems. His legendary Youthman Promotion sound is still known today not just for the music it produced, but for the long list of young vocalists it raised.

In celebration of his 65th birthday, VP Records drew for a mix from some of the best in the western US. Virgo Hi-Power is a long-time sound crew featuring DJ Boomshot (Maui, Hawaii) and DJ Solid Rock (San Diego, California). Their focus in this 80-minute tribute is mostly early 80s, with flashes of more style.
The mix includes just some of Sugar’s hits, LP cuts, singles, hidden gems, a few dubs, and excerpts from Carter Van Pelt’s Sugar Minott WKCR Memorial Broadcast (available at archive.org). As always, Sugar is nice, rough, timeless, bubbling, and sweet.

Tribute mix to The Late Great Sir John Holt - RIP SIR JOHN HOLT 

John Kenneth Holt

John Holt was born in Kingston in 1947. By the age of twelve, he was a regular entrant in talent contests run at Jamaican theatres by Vere Johns. He recorded his first single in 1963 with "I Cried a Tear" for record producer Leslie Kong, and also recorded duets with Alton Ellis.  He achieved prominence in his home country as lead singer of the Paragons and they cut a succession of singles for Duke Reid at his Treasure Isle Studio and enjoyed a string of hits, including "Ali Baba", "Tonight", "I See Your Face", and Holt penned "The Tide Is High" (later made famous by Blondie and also covered by Atomic Kitten)."Wear You to the Ball" was another of his hits with the Paragons, and hit the charts again when U-Roy added a Deejay verse to it. During his time with the Paragons, he also recorded solo material for Studio One (including "Fancy Make-up", "A Love I Can Feel", "Let's Build Our Dreams" and "OK Fred") and Prince Buster ("Oh Girl", and "My Heart Is Gone").

"They Gonna Talk" was released on 12 inch as "Wonder What The People Say" 1999 and might be Beres most popular tune ever. Many songs here have been a favourite for a certain person or sound. Since 2005 Phoenix Music International Ltd has been building a catalogue of music that crosses genres, eras, geographical lines, scenes and cities. It began with Belfern and Deviant, and since has taken in Gut, Telstar, Jet Star, Resist, Collins Classics, Renaissance and Azuli. A proper in-house publishing company now exists, as does a team of nine music lovers of all tastes and flavours.

At the heart is a simple philosophy – we do the best we can for the artists, writers and labels that make up our catalogue. “The best” may mean tracking down digital royalties from an independent release in Mexico, it may mean syncing a track to a Hollywood blockbuster, or it may mean actually tracking down an artist to tell them we have royalties for them. 

So as it says on our twitter, we acquire, we license, we sell, we publish, we sync and we pay. Simple really.
