This was a fun track to make. I wanted to try and make something purely noisy and intense, but always delivering a feeling that 100 times more power was still fighting to get out, like the potency of human nature. After deciding on a basic chord structure, it was just a matter of layering and layering, which gave an interesting interference result, you can hear the different waves interacting to give beating patterns.

The layers were made from some Operators in Ableton with Guitar Rigs and Saturators, plus a Moog Minitaur with a fast LFO with high resonance, plus Andy Ramsay’s overdriven guitar amps and speakers re-recorded, plus Phil Kieran’s tape saturation/distortion - it’s basically a right mess! You can even hear some of the leftovers on Phil’s tape at the end, with him speeding it up and slowing it down. Interestingly, that Moog on there was the only analogue synthesiser used in the whole album, the rest was all sourced digitally, albeit with some subtle analogue compression and analogue mixing desk throughs at the end.

From the very beginning it’s clear we’re listening to something that has been sharpened by a diamond tipped blade – sure there are references to Burial, 2562 and Martyn (to name just a handful), but Phon.O’s crisp, clean production elevates ‘Black Boulder’ into places many of his contemporaries simply can’t reach. The minimal techno reductionism of his past comes in handy with ‘ABAW723’ that has the soulful swing of Sepulchre but adds a rich, echoing Berlin dub crash mat. These subtle elements transform ‘Black Boulder’ from a merely successful exercise in low-end engineering into something playable, instant and rewarding. PHON.O - "Black Boulder" - Album Medley (50Weapons) 2LP/CD/Digital

Just in time for summer, Pampa issued Aimlessness, the long-awaited new album from Dntel AKA Los Angeles producer Jimmy Tamborello. His latest electronic suite brought forth stronger leanings toward house grooves, building upon the pop and IDM approaches he explored earlier in his career as half of the Postal Service and a member of Figurine – with a healthy dose of Pampa otherworldliness on top. 

Now, Robag Wruhme steps in and recontextualizes two Aimlessness cuts for a remix EP. Wruhme is already a beloved member of DJ Koze’s extended family, having released the full-length Thora Vukk about one year ago, which was deemed “another success for both him and Pampa” in Resident Advisor’s four-star review.

First up is Robag’s “Kloff Mottüré” mix of “Bright Night”, a starry-eyed transformation of Dntel’s work that twinkles like fireflies in the clear midnight sky. With symphonic splashes, playful pitter-patters and a tranquil breakdown, it sounds a bit like teenage toads skinny-dipping amongst the lilypads.

Next up, Robag finds inspiration in Dntel’s “Jitters”, not once but twice:  The “Marf Labo” mix takes the title quite literally, offering a jittery breakbeat interpretation with a metallic angel chorus swirling over the haphazard beats. Finally, on the flip side, the “Emmens Worsch” mix brings things more closely aligned with the grooving, heartfelt house thump that Pampa has engendered. It’s the EP’s most DJ-friendly cut, while at the same time showing off Robag’s gentle production touches and letting Tamborello’s sweet, subdued voice shine through.
