Boris Bunnik returns to the Fluid Electronics label after he delivered a stunning remix for Rob Belleville in 2020. This is his first outing under the Vernon Felicity alias since 2016. Boris - better known for his work as Conforce and Versalife, steps up with four cuts joining the dots between sci-fi-infused scenarios, rapturous synthy vistas and AI-powered club dynamism, bound to have dance floors phasing in a paradox of hi-intensity wares and textures-splattered sonics tailored to maximal effect. 

Breaking the EP in, “Chord Memory” lets out a thunder of raucous machine gargling. Navigating a league of its own, halfway proper muscular EBM and no-frills techno from the deep, this one attacks pedal to the metal with great loads of aggro kicks, rattling snares and monster bass swells surging upon the ravers with ominous presence. Doped on laser blasts and liquid-like vintage keyboardry, “Hindsight” blazes a trail of dusty acidness across, laying it thick with FX-riddled stabs and octave-shifting pads out an oddly distorted VHS score. 

Flip it over and here is “Contemplation” - a synth-heavy, Chicagoan style mover, smoothly drifting into Blade Runner-esque hyperspace as bars run by. From minute first to last, VF serves up a premium skittish and playful disco chug endowed with the right dose of...  more

Vernon Felicity - Hindsight

Mazewski and Verlake kick off our Fixed Rhythms digital single series with a heady minimal techno cut that’s got the sauce…a loopiness that you never tire of and brain tingling snappy percussion on top. Both artists are representing the Polish underground on their own terms. Mazewski has two sold out 12”s on Brutaż, and Verlake has released on Diffuse Reality, Jungle Gym Records, Father ad Son, K-HOLE TRAX, mystictrax. He also co-runs his own label, Laral Tapes, together with Dextre.

Alongside the original, there are two fabulous remixes. Japan’s Hizuo brings a delightfully playful and psychedelic breakbeat remix. Hizuo was featured in Mixmag Asia’s “Artists Exciting Us In 2024”, and I’m sure we can expect lots more great material from him. Then for the second remix, London’s Vertical Cat delivers a sunrise appropriate dubby and subtly ravey take on the tune. All three deliver something unique for various slots of a party.

The pieces of the puzzle had all fallen into place and begun to make sense as he looked outwards at the great pyramids which stood tall and overlooked the desolate city. Blocks of despair, built by a people long ago under a strict regime. That was all they were, a homage to a time in which the world stood still and those that run it ruled with an iron fist and a cold hearted gaze. They had once watched as the innocent put the bricks down for a society which they would govern with cruelty and might. Now it was time for change, time to knock them down. 

Asyncronous have been long standing favourites of the team over at Phonica. Apparently their last record was an in store favourite and featured in their best of list. Now they have welcomed them to their in house label, a special treat and a meditative record which explores deep textures and delicate tonality.

PREMIERE: Asyncronous - Blocks Of Despair [Phonica Records Special Editions]

The next release in the Phonica Special Edition series comes from Ukrainian duo Asyncronous who first came to our attention after hearing their critically acclaimed debut on Berlin label Slow Life, ‘The Art of Fighting In A Dream’. A Phonica favourite, it provided the soundtrack to many days in the shop throughout the year, culminating in its inclusion in our top ten Best Singles of 2019! 

The Phonica Special Edition series is focused on one-of projects, special remixes or collaborations, highlighting music that is slightly left of the dance floor and pairing it with unique artwork. 

The result on this EP is a hazy cosmic trip through their universe of synth swells, deep sub-bass and meticulous percussion. The journey begins on our featured track: ”Padma Kirtanam”, with a constant drone providing the backbone to a building tension scattered with drums.
