Anjunadeep welcomes Alan Fitzpatrick to the fray for his debut release on the soul-brimming imprint. Alan Fitzpatrick’s decorated release catalogue and steadfast come up outshone the underground techno diaspora, placing him firmly on the world stage as a headline artist garnering international reverence and undeniable industry support. 

A new sound has emerged from Fitzpatrick’s sonic palette; broader in its range and rooted in experiments with more soulful or deeper influences from across electronica, breakbeat, dub and house. A sound that sits comfortably among the rich, depth-charged records being released by the aforementioned Anjunadeep. 

‘Warning Signs’ is the collaborative effort of both Fitzpatrick and Lawrence Hart, the pair’s debut with the label is a twisting house menagerie with dazzling and thought-provoking sound design. The arrangement rises with groove-stricken drum programming and interweaving atmospheric details, sub-atomic bassline stabs walk hauntingly beneath the composition’s main body.

Every element fluently communicating with its counterpart is what makes this track truly special, appearing to breathe and fluctuate as the melody opens up alongside a flurry of hi-hats and hypnotic vocal hooks. “I first heard Lawrence’s voice in 2015, when I received the promo of ‘Call It Love’ by George Fitzgerald. I was immediately blown away” says Alan.

Moonlit arpeggiators will carry the record into a crescendo of paradisiacal strings and warping low end frequencies, the pair have cultivated the perfect antidote to a year without clubland as we wish our progression back to normal life can be as starry-eyed as this arrangement.

Panorama Bar resident and Love On The Rocks label head Paramida joins us for the 92nd edition of the Phonica Mix Series. 

Since moving to Berlin in 2010, Paramida has since become a key figure in the cities ever-expanding electronic music scene. In 2014 she launched her Love On The Rocks label which has seen releases from Massimiliano Pagliara, Telephones, Fantastic Man, Elles, Violet, Alex Kassian and more.  

Having spent five years working at Oye Records, Paramida is certainly no stranger to digging. Each of her varied DJ sets brings a new beacon of pleasure and surprise. Blending proto-house to trance, percussive gems with high-energy techno, Italian dream house and irresistible new beat. Sounds that are very much reflected in this here recording. With a heap of solid releases out in the last while from labels like Byron Yeates' Radiant Love imprint and Sepehr's Shaytoon Records - Kasra V's production styles reaching the realms of breaks and techy club numbers have been forward thinking and truly head turning. As a DJ he has earned the respect of some of the biggest names in the industry, played in some of the biggest clubs in Europe like Panorama Bar and Fabric as well as recently marked his 10 year residency on NTS radio. With a new label "V-SION" and its first release focusing on his tenure at the long running radio institution in London things are only moving further in the upwards trajectory for the artist.

An episode that feels well overdue yet thoroughly worth the wait! A titan of the Naarm underground music scene, Pjenné has been a kindred spirit and longtime pal since the early days of MDC, and it's no surprise that her contribution is packed full of gloriously deep and immersive feels, bassy and driving in parts and light as a feather in others, speaking to a palette that has been meticulously explored and continues to evolve along with her incredible weekly radio show on PBS, Passing Notes.

Q. What sounds of feelings did you draw upon when gathering inspiration for this mix, and what listening environments could you imagine it being best enjoyed in?

A. For this mix, I wanted to channel the energy and sounds that I associate with Melbourne Deepcast rather than drawing on the darker side of my sound palette that has been at the fore of my radio and club sets of late. MDC means so many things to me, but there’s definitely an energetic, grooviness that comes to mind and this is what inspired the mix. Although the mix does showcase parts of me (heavily atmospheric, emotive and a few downtempo tracks for good measure), I’d say this is more of a mix for you. :) I imagine this mix being listened to outside, on a sunny day, but when you might also need a little extra pep in your step. 

Q. Are there any songs in the mix that are especially close to your heart, and what is it about these tracks that resonate with you so much?

A. The first that came to mind is a track by Sean Cusick and Medway (Jesse Skeens) - It is an incredibly beautiful and emotive breakbeat track from 2002 on Saw recordings, there’s just something about how the vocals and the pads wash over you - although its upbeat there's also a sombreness to it and I just think its the whole package. 

Towards the end of the mix there’s also a very very classic ambient trance number, Lazer Worshippers by Damon Wild & Tim Taylor from 1993 - Not the most deeply dug track but it's a classic for a reason.

Q. You have been lovingly broadcasting your weekly radio show Passing Notes on PBS for six years running, which is a serious achievement! Tell us what you did for your sixth anniversary on International Women's Day, and what keeps you inspired to broadcast the show week in week out?

A. It’s been a wild ride that’s for sure! I really appreciate that International Women’s Day marks each yearly anniversary of Passing Notes - it reminds me to stop and reflect on each year as an achievement that I would probably otherwise forget in the chaos of life. This year I enlisted the help of Syrian DJ and Harmony Rec affiliate Zeynep, who provided an excellent, playful and sassy celebratory guest mix. 

As for my inspiration to keep going, I’d say that I draw from the collective power of electronic artists locally as well as internationally. There’s just so much good music to share, and Passing Notes enables me to provide a crucial connection between ‘underground’ electronic music and the wider music community. I'm also inspired by live radio as a format - it provides a sanctuary for me from the highly curated nature of music today and allows me to be more playful in the way that I explore different sounds. To me it is a place free of judgement.

Aural Trace makes a striking debut on Melopee with a sound that’s both driving and emotionally rich, weaving together threads of New Beat, Post-Punk, Italo Disco, and Techno. The result is a moody yet energetic blend. Dark, introspective, but lit from within by cinematic flashes of light.

"Beyond the Horizon" kicks things off with a raw, physical energy. A pulsing bassline and relentless rhythm propel the track forward, while soaring synths and spectral melodies stretch the edges of the mix. There's a cinematic tension at play here, where the spirit of classic Italo is pushed through a darker, modern lens.

"Until The End" shifts the mood inward. Slower and more contemplative, it trades intensity for emotion, with rounded low-end, gentle percussion, and luminous, floating synth work. It's a track that glows softly, carried by a sense of hopeful melancholy and dreamy momentum.

As another (rather unusual) year comes to an end, we close off our 2020 Mix Series with a sensational hour-long recording from one of the UK’s finest electronic music producers - Daniel Avery.

Daniel’s mix, however, is far from the ordinary. We'll let him explain in his own words below.

"The act of DJing feels like it exists on another planet at the moment but, unemployment aside, I feel fortunate to have closed my eyes this year,” Avery explains. “I’ve found a real solace in my metal box down by the water, the doors of which seemed to have been locked from the outside. In a good way. It’s all meant that the pile of new music is bigger than ever and, when asked to make a mix for my favourite dance emporium Phonica, I had the opportunity to do something different. So, to round off the slow-motion blur of 2020, here is a mixtape made up of new and exclusive stuff: unheard demos, versions, live jams and studio experiments. Most of it was made for the club. Since the age of 14, he dove into programming and creating music on his computer at his studio in the Darß peninsula in Germany, becoming a master in emotive music.
