Leif is a great DJ and a very talented producer. He’s been steadily releasing quality music since 2004 and although his sound has developed significantly during this time, it has always possessed a unique aesthetic and high production value that has gained him loyal support from some of the best selectors in the game. Leif is also a resident of the Freerotation festival in Wales, which has grown to become one of the most highly regarded electronic music festivals in the world since its inception in 2007.

The mysterious STL is back with a release on Phonica Records‘ White label.

His raw underground sound has been favoured by the house and techno heads since his releases first surfaced in the early 2000s. Despite keeping a fairly low profile, his musical output has been far from invisible. As well as releasing multiple records via his own Something imprint, his other releases have found homes on Smallville, Perlon, and Detroit’s Echospace to name a few.

This two-track Amplified Bleep Package EP features ‘Earworm’ on the A-side, a crunchy, rough and repetitive club track ready to carry you through to the early hours of the morning.

On the B-side you’ll find ‘A Cat And Her Solar Life’, an upbeat alternative to ‘Earworm’, featuring cosmic melodic synths and harmonies.

Although revered within the underground scene, STL has always kept a low profile and consistently pursued his own blend of boundary pushing abstract and experimental House & Techno. The majority of his music has been released through his own ‘Something’ imprint but his unique productions have also found a home on Perlon, Smallville and Detroit’s Echospace. The two tracks on his just released ‘The Amplified Bleep Package’ EP serve as a new weapon for London label Phonica White.

February has arrived and we've decided to go with something a little different for episode 21 of the Phonica Mix Series. Andrew Weatherall is a legend of the UK music scene and also one of our regulars here at the shop. We've always considered him to have a finely tuned ear and he loves to dig for music across all genres and styles. We always wanted him to contribute to the series and this month's episode is one of the most original submissions we've had as it doesn't contain a single track of House & Techno which is arguably the main sound our shop has become associated with. There isn't much that hasn't already been said about this legendary producer, DJ and master remixer so we've decided to let the music do the talking here. Here you'll find an eclectic mix that includes everything from slow-mo Patrick Cowley cuts to afro rhythms from William Onyeabor and mid 80's cold wave from Nagamatzu.

'Jeff Mills has been a hero of mine for a quarter of a century, but around 6 or 7 years ago I realized that I had lost touch with his world.  Part of the reason is his prolific nature (which makes it hard to keep up) and the other factor is that Jeff just wasn't producing "hits" like i9 or Gamma Player at this point, so if you weren't paying close attention, some of what he was doing was easy to miss. Jeff was going deeper and more conceptual, stretching his recurring themes to their limits and exploring new territory that wasn't necessarily geared toward creating dancefloor mayhem. As I caught up with the releases I had missed and started keeping up again, I was drawn in particular to his ambient and experimental efforts, which I think are somewhat overlooked because of his legendary status as a dancefloor DJ. With this in mind, I got the idea to compile a mix of my favorite tracks of his in the more abstract style. Here is the result of that idea. Enjoy, and long live Jeff Mills.'

We got a special mix for you this fine Friday! Our very own resident Rodney has crafted a one of a kind mix to start off our Housepitality Resident Mix Series! 
Rodney has been an avid Housepitality attendee for years before his DJ career began. Inspired by the infectious vibe of the local underground scene, his vinyl collection was already becoming one of unique taste. His devotion to vinyl became noticed by our O.G. resident Tyrel Williams who saw the talent before him and took him under his wing like his mentors Miles Maeda and Justin Aulis Long did, thus extending the lineage to him. Rodney became a serious student of the craft and put thousands of hours required to blend his wax. He showed serious interest and intention to become a Housepitality resident to Tyrel Williams in which he told Rodney to make a mix for me, Miguel. Using his newly fine-tuned ear he put this mix together that’s dear to him and showcases his respect and love for Housepitality. 
Around 2018 when looking for a new resident for Housepitality, Rodney came to mind. His weekly attendance to our parties, increasing amount of local bookings, an epic set played at Sunset Campout and also opening for Housepitality events with the likes of Tin Man and BMG, it was a no brainer. I simply loved his energy, his constant improvement in the craft and getting shouts from some of our very own local heads. I called him and asked him if he would be a resident and he did not hesitate to join the squad.
In July 2020, a few weeks after Rodney had played one of the best 3 hour sets of the year on our Housepitality Transmissions stream, he contacts me to tell me he had made me a mix exclusively for Housepitality. Originally an audition mix that was in the works to join Housepitality, Rodney had made a mix true to his heart- the love of wax and a tribute to those who have mentored him. Rodney still submitted the mix even after two years being a resident DJ for Housepitality already. I was startled by the story and was excited to hear about this mix. I spent the time and put on the headset and enjoyed 1:10:50 of pure underground house music vinyl mixing magic by Rodney. I can hear the Miles Maeda lineage as the tracks are carefully chosen and mixed appropriately to create a sensation, a feeling while simultaneously sharing his environment. Rodney is devoted to the utter essence of vinyl mixing and the ‘jak,’ spirit that makes the underground so special. The unexplainable beats that overtake you and leave you no other option but to move your body.
